In today's world you need something catchy to grab people's attention, be it
a name, unique look or one of a kind software/setup.

It's real easy for someone to download and setup synchronet or mystic,
making it stand out from the rest is the challenge. People who put no effort before the basic install are more of a hinder to this hobby than a help. The only people who should be running a "stock" looking system are the authors
of said software. After all, "stock" synchronet or mystic systems are just copies of Digital Man's and g00r00's system, since it is their software.

Synchro.net dynamic DNS is built into SBBS, so I'm good there. But perhaps fornon-Synch systems?

Maybe g00r00 could add something similar to Mystic, something that is a framework that could interface directly with bind.

The first time I registered nrbbs.net was through Network Solutions. I got a money order from the bank for US$100, printed and filled out the form and mailed it to them. I can't remember how long it took, but I remember coming home from school and anxiously checking the mailbox.

Now I can register the domain for CDN$15 per year through 10dollar.ca.

I do dynamic DNS through 1984hosting.com. I just have cron do a wget every 10 minutes in case my IP changes, which it almost never does. It's free and they also offer DNSSEC, which I also setup. Not that anybody actually uses/checks DNSSEC records, but it's still kind of neat to see all green checkmarks at:

I'm not trying to insult anyone. I just think that removing that message makes a BBS more inviting, and I can tell that you feel the same way.

Every sysop is an artist though to some extent. When you give your BBS a name, and you choose colors you like, and you add message bases pertaining to stuff that you can relate to, that's all art in my opinion.

The conversations we have on BBSs are more valuable to me than any customizations though. We're all (mostly) people who experienced BBSs in the old days and we're coming back to it to get some of the same kicks we had back then.

That's an interesting way of looking at things, and I like it. Some people think that one _has_ to do the arty stuff, but I hate working with UIs, something about that is always a bit tedious. My specialty was and is messaging - getting a diverse range of message areas onto a BBS - a task much harder to so nowadays, because of the smaller and less diverse (more likely sysops) userbase.
