Echomail is fun! I can't believe I waited like 30 years to get into it!
I'm carrying 4 echomail networks now, and by the time I'm done reading messages and I poll again, there's a whole bunch more to read!
Which networks are you on now? If you haven't checked out DOVE-Net, I'd get on there too. It's quite busy and sometimes inflammatory.
You read my mind! I like Dovenet. I used to read it when Alcoholiday when running.
I'll give it a try!
Just remember that there's no swearing on Fidonet. When someone swears on Fidonet, it kills everyone's buzz except for the moderators. It will only enhance the moderator's buzz :)

That was how things went for me, too...previously I didn't really communicate much other than IRC lol.
Hehe on a serious note I trimmed the number of nets I carry down pretty substantially. I think there's a "less is more" aspect for callers, or at least for me as an administrator.
Are you one of the guys from #mysticbbs? That was a thing back around 2014. I used to visit there a lot.
That's a good idea. I trimmed my echos down by removing most of the unsocial ones - scistats here, fidonews on fido, stuff like that. They seem like conversation killers to me.

I don't particularly want to see people swearing - that does nothing for me.
But I find it hilarious to see grown men arguing about about their consitutional right to swear!

I set these echos up as default off for newscans but sometimes like perusing them myself. For me, I've discovered each net has its own personality, so I try to curate the nets that align best with what I believe my board's personality tries to be.
There is an echo with the shortname "DR" that is full of swearing. Stop by!

Yeah nothing like a big QWK packet to peruse. ;)
I'm sure there's a logical reason why these nets have a stats echo (it's not just Scinet) but I haven't figured it out yet.
The issue with fidonet isn't so much language as it is people who have been in their mom's basement for the past 50 years still hanging on to
the old ways. The P4 thumpers as we call them, waving around policy 4

It would be highly unlikely, but hilarious if some of these guys showed up o Scinet, or any other net besides Fido. I think me & Atreyu & Bob Roberts are about the only ones you'll find on here in addition to Fido.

Fido is a culture foreign to the rest of the BBS world. These are people tha you can't find on other BBSs or on other BBS networks. And some of them can' be found outside of the politics echos. They are STUCK on politics.

The nice thing about being in a net other than Fido is being in a net other than Fido. I really don't want some of those faces in here.
Well, I follow some Fido subs. It is just that I prowl much more than I participate. Most of Fido is quite quiet anyway.
It depends on where you are at on Fidonet. I moderate one echo where I have been lax on that, but there have been a couple of less-than-adults who have taken advantage. I ask them not to excessively swear and they get a buzz. :)
I only got a buzz when I figured out that I could bit-bucket

+1 on this, and I offer FTN feeds for it for those who have issues getting it via QWK.
There are users who are stats nerds, keeping them in one echo is a better id than them flooding echo's. This way they are in one place where people who want to read them can.

I set all of the network stats echos as sysop only echos. I think they are good for keeping track of whether or not you are connecting
regularly and, if you are a member of the network games, whether or not your packets are reaching the game hub.
I think it is because those are the only echos where (they think) they
can get away with their crap. Also because politics echos are the only echos where they can avoid certain folks who don't read them.
And me. :)

There's not really an application per say, you just create a QWK account on Vertrauen (vert.synchro.net) and then create a QWK network on Mystic usingBlack Panther's instructions available on his BBS at bbs.castlerockbbs.com(look for the file ms-qwk12.zip).

There are like 3 echos that are all cooking. I think 2 of them are just recipes, but COOKING has these really in depth conversations about food that never imagined. I haven't gone thru the posts there much yet, I will eventually.
The constant posting of Meal Master recipes is fun. Some of the things they post look really complicated to cook. If I have to make a sauce separate fr the food, I'm out.

I don't like messaging online for several reasons. That's even more true wi modern web forums, but it's still somewhat true with BBSs. In the case of BBSs, ease of navigation is the main issue - the interface is designed for reading via a slow modem. The other issue is you're at the mercy at network dropouts, lag, etc.

I think messaging online is quite bearable with BBS.
I am the sort of person who always sets a dedicated desktop, local
client for everything if possible, be it email, calendar managing or whatever. Mostly, it is because web interfaces suck and deserve to burn
in hell alongside their designers.
However, BBS interfaces are so minimal and uninstrusive once you learn them, I haven't bothered to get a local client installed. Old good Columbian Kermit suffices.
Lag and drop-outs are not what they used to be. I have had some bugs in the BBS I connect to kill my messages, though, by hanging as I was
writing them, and that is crappy.

This just comes to show how moronic society is by locking
itself up in vendor App markets. In Android you can at least
get your applications from different repositories, but on
iOS you are pretty much stuck with what Apple deigns to
offer you.
Seriously, you can't even install software you write

Apple and pay, pay, pay!!!!

Parler does not form part to the Big Tech cult where you
either sign the party line or get destroyed.
Brace yourselves, your favourite book forums are next.
BUT.. users don't pay for the iOS. Maybe Apple's approach can
be viewed akin to a sysop operating a bbs. If you don't like
what the sysop is doing, you can't force the sysop to give you
co-sysop privileges. The option is the freedom to go elsewhere.
In the meantime, Apple prides itself in thinking that they
provide a reliable OS that "just works" with all their products.
If JohnnyApple comes along with his "app" and it messes up
everybody's screens or breaks something else, that would be no

Do you mean the online places like GoodReads?
Actually, I see that there could be a fine consequence if Amazon
extends its reach to books. If they de-list the titles they
don't like, the market shifts to the independent retailer who
has a fine relationship with the publisher.
Amazon would be cutting its own throat. That would be fine by

Nonononono you donñ t get it.
Amazon delists the books that don't follow the party line.
Then Google delists your independent shop from its lists of

Google is not the only search engine out there. Independents can
encourage people to shift to DuckDuckGo, for example.
The Google search engine right now doesn't even find the many
sources of a particular book when independents use the web/
shopping services with http://bookmanager.com (I'd use it if I
had the $5K start-up price) It's up to the independent seller to
market their own site.
They don't want the book out of Amazon, they want the book

I believe you. But then they would have to influence one of the
biggest distributors out there: https://www.ingramcontent.com
Amazon and Indigo both obtain stock through them. I know. I've
had packing lists and invoices included in error in *my* orders.
Such derison is hardly worthy of a respectable person.

You may be both in the dark web and here.
In fact, you may be very active in the dark web and show in the clearnet from time to time to tell people who nice the dark web is.
The dark web is very nice btw.
They don't fare well because they lack Google integration. That means lots of business apps won't work. You can install Google cruft on it but that defeats the point imo.

compromised when your data is exfiltrated. Signal doesn't decrypt anything; it's all end to end and private, so even if your data is exfiltrated, it's not useful (until we can break the encryption which would take a lot of effort and money).
IIRC, it had a rotary dial on it! It used an SBC or or some other small project board as its base.
I filed it away somewhere under things I would like to try someday but I amnot sure where that info is now. :)
In short, that means an application that was supposed to be ahead of others when it came to privacy and not spying on you will now be spying
on you.
They don't fare well because they lack Google integration. That means lots of business apps won't work. You can install Google cruft on it but that defeats the poin
imo.
Last time I set a Lineageos phone, I lost it. My fav mare found it in the pasture and decided to play soccer with it. RIP phone.
Not too long ago there was someone who had a build a cell phone kit. They originally came up with the idea just to see if they could build one for themselves and the
started offering the instructions (and most of the
parts) as a kit.
IIRC, it had a rotary dial on it! It used an SBC or or some other small project board as its base.
I filed it away somewhere under things I would like to try someday but I am not sure where that info is now. :)
* SLMR 2.1a * What do you mean, QWK?? It took me over an hour to read!!

Yes - that sounds familiar. Many people won't care, and this is totally fine with Google I'm sure. But not me! I'd do just about anything to stop floatin my number around, including delete WhatsApp.
I found out what my wife's complaint is about: she said WhatsApp changed theirprivacy policy and now they will share their users phone numbers withaffiliates.
This is NOT what the internet was created to DO - and in
fact, the inventor of 'the internet' is pitching a new idea/
way of doing things. I wish I were a REAL computer fanatic
and could post an article talking about that right now.. but
I don't have it here. :P
It was an interesting podcast point, tho... and he want's to
design a new way for developers and users of 'the internet'
to do things and have it be separate from the current
'internet'.
I think using phone numbers for account identification is a
moronic idea which only makes sense for the sake of
simplifying helpdesk when your userbase has no discipline to
use a username and a password. The model really release the
customer support burden A LOT at the expense of requiring an
important piece of information from the user that should not
be necesary to operate the service.
Oh.. don't tell me - the "inventor of the internet" now wants
to invent the BBS?

It's kind of a big deal, IMO. Just [much] more of the same, that we've come know of FB and Google and Amazon's of the world... between those and Apple, just don't know how safe it is to USE those services anymore. Literally.

I forget what the company is called. Basically he wants to
be the holder of all your personal info, and then you
authorize individual apps or companies a temporary license
to access that personal info. So maybe your address and CC
info is stored there, and when you want to check out you
"approve" the store accessing that info, but only once.

If the "license" to access my personal info translates to
dollars into my PayPal account (or something like that), that
might be fine. So.. if I get paid for every cookie and tracking
info that that is gleened from my usage on the net, then I might
like that.

If I understood it correctly, its a little deeper than that. Whatsapp
will now be sharing your telephone number AND metadata across any app/service that Facebook owns.
Some sort of blockchain scheme, I assume?

I can tell that it's an invasion of privacy, although probably legally disclosed in their privacy policy. But what harm can it do if big tech finds ouabout stuff I ordered or that I used Google maps to find a place?

Not sure. The company is Inrupt.com.
It's based on solidproject.org.
My wife told me that she's boycotting WhatsApp, due to some
privacy issue that I don't understand, and she's trying to
get all her friends to switch to some other system -
Telegram I think.
But I don't know what the big deal is. If big tech wants to
spy on our internet calls, why not just let them?

Oh.. that's the old "if not doing anything bad, then nothing to
hide" argument.

Everyone has *something* to hide or to be ashamed of.
A good presentation of "what the big deal is" and "why not let
them" is in this TED talk:
