during normal office hours.

I'm going a bit stir crazy TBO. I had a video call with my Dr yesterday and asked her to prescribe me something to save me from my kids. Her answer: Alcohol. Who says that a universal socialist health care system sucks ;)

Printing ~300 face shield headbands took a lot of time, which I
didn't expect at the outset. I thought I'd just be going back to
the printer ever hour and a half to start a new print. Instead I
spent a bunch of time tuning and fixing up my printer.
Then I looked at my dusty old 3D printer sitting on the shelf and
decided to bring it out of retirement. I'd ordered a bed
expansion upgrade for it two years ago, but never installed it
because it seemed like a lot of work so I procrastinated.
In the end I had two printers on the go for ~18 hours a day,
producing five parts at a time.
Joined forces with my employer, and together we donated 1500+
units to the hospital. Our donation pushed them past their target
of 10,000, so I'm done printing for now. (Or free to print crap
for myself again.)

I like being at home, so it doesn't bother me at all. Working 4 days a week and trying to keep busy.
Have some ideas for BBS things I might work on, but we'll see if I get

I had a chat ith my psychologist today on the phone ("telehealth" appointment), and he was rather impressed at how I've used ham radio to manage the isolation over the past few weeks. :) Knowing I'm a fairly social person, he was a bit concerned, but underestimated my resourcefulness. :)
Hahaha! But... did she write you a prescription for it, so you
wouldn't have to pay for it? ;-)
"Jim Beam 1.75liter". "Take 4 shots each evening, as needed, for stress". "14 day supply, 26 refills".
I hit 30 units printed and lost my PSU. I ordered a beefier Meanwell to replace it. Just finished printing a new case for it to mount to the Prusa using an old portable 3D printer I made a few years back. Was great to see that it still worked although it took me a while to get it tuned back up.
That is awesome. Great to see people doing stuff like that. If the $illionaire could only see you now.
I doubt if he'd be able to reconcile the idea that someone could be a
bit of a dick to him without also being an enemy of all humankind. Too complex.
My wife and daughter are great (my daughter is 22) but my 13 year old son, he
is just like me which makes me want to kill him most days.
Heh, yeah, I'm curious to see what my son is going to be like when he
gets to that more willful period in his life. Thankfully I don't have to worry about that for twelve and a half years.

I think we initially did, but as is always the case, the ebb and flow nature of bbsing dictated that the activity level would peter out a bit.

If the models already exist, it's usually not difficult at all to print them. Just ties up the printer for a while (which can be a long time depending on the level of detail).

Nothing. I'm about to lose it. Struggling with work/life balance a bit working from home full time - I find myself working late and/or putting

I think I studied casually for a couple of months and then went and took the test for my "Basic" qualification. Got 98% or 99% and came away with "Basic with Honours". Went and got my "Advanced" license a couple of
years later.
In the USA you have three levels of licensing (Technician, General,
Extra) and I believe it's also free, however some organizations may
charge a testing fee or a fee for a course, but it wouldn't be much.
The Technician exam is quite simple, so depending on your aptitude you could be ready for it in a day or a week. It's generally wroth writing that exam and the General one at the same time, if not also trying for extra.
There's a huge market for used equipment, and a very wide price range
for new stuff. So a handheld for local use, priced in USD, I would guess you could get something decent, used, for $50 and up, or something
crappy, new, for about the same or slightly more. Sky's the limit,
though; you could pay hundreds and spend your entire savings on radio
gear if you wanted to.

I'd really hoped to get more of my project backlog (especially BBS
related stuff) squashed. I was working on that MORE intensely before all of this shit started. I have a door I sunk tons of time into that literally only requires a few string changes and some docs and it's
done, but I haven't touched it in a month. UGH.
Interesting. I need a battery cover for a guitar pedal. Interested? :)
WFH seems to have curtailed my drinking a lot, too.
Can one test online? Again, I'm sure I can just google it, but somehow I think a Pearson testing center isn't an option right now.
Ah, cool. I've gotten a few tech certs this way and am a pretty quick study.
Ok, cool. In the military a lot of my job revolved around RF theory. Hard to
say any more than that but I think this suggests I'd have a decent base of knowledge already.
Given accurate dimensions and an idea of what it should look like, possibly.
The downside is the distance and international border. If the first one
I make doesn't work, then I need to send a second, and a third, and fill out paperwork each time, etc.
Because of COVID-19, tests *are* available online in your country right now, or they were a while back. Some club in Alaska was doing it, I
think. I'll see if I can find the details later.
Sounds like you'll do fine; maybe just skim through some study guides,
do a practice test, and I doubt if you'll have any trouble.

I spoke with my lead about this today. He said that one hygienic recommendation he's been trying (successfully) is to no longer allow binging TV shows on the weekends and stuff - those are for active hobby engagement time. He binges shows on weeknights after work and shuts off Slack. Seems cool in theory but everything always feels like it's on
fire for me, and it's hard to unplug.
Same here. I really am only a few screens away from putting my board up officially, but there's a backlog of 80 items I want to fix or change,
and I haven't moved on them much in the past month for no reason at all. :/ I need to sit and focus.

Good advice. I actually already doing something similar, although having to go out into the world to shop now has really put a dent into my

I'm not sure how they feel about testing people outside of their region. However, apparently other clubs are getting organized to do the same, so maybe one in your area will be ready soon.

That's a bit over the top. The cops here here fined a learner driver

Somewhat.
In the case of Echolink, yes. It's like joining a group voice chat
using any VOIP product, with a bit of ham radio mixed in.
In the case of DMR, sorta. It can be like that, or it can be entirely
over ham radio. Like analog FM, but better audio quality, caller ID,
and text messages.
Some hams just can't set up a large antenna and are restricted to handhelds and shorter range stuff. If they can get a "hotspot" device
or if they can reach the nearest repeater that's connected to one of
these networks, then they're still able to talk to people around the world.
Less relevant today, but imagine 15 - 20 years ago, you could just
bring a walkie-talkie with you when you went out, and use it to talk to your friend in Australia for free (as long as you're within range of
the repeater).
These things have their merits and are interesting to work with. May
not be traditional ham radio, but again, it's a huge hobby with lots of different things to do.
Also, it's sort of the lowest common denominator. If you want to start

It gets really bad when someone who is not talking and is not on mute
also has their speakers turned up too loud... the feedback is awful. I figured out on Teams meetings I somehow have the ability to mute individuals or even everyone at once. I have not been afraid to use it.

Ha! Hilariously, I was going to make a similar comment about the guy I was describing but decided not publicize my violnet fantasies would be more prudent... ;)

Repeat, I'd like to join the door league if I can get a spot!
I just need all the FTN info and anything you think of...
Fill out the app in the SciNet info pack which you can get from https://scinet-ftn.org and send it to me and I will get you going.
Do I send that to you or Dan I only have Dan's email address.
The instructions are in the app, including the email address to send it to.
I have always wanted to get my licensee and never got around to doingI
It'd be such a great hobby for you; really plays to a lot of your interests, and there are so many different things you can do with it.
Also it'd be great to have a local friend on the air. I know one other
BBS guy in the area who's also a ham, maybe we could stir up some activity.
If you have any interest at all, get your license. You'll have it for
life and it'll be there when you want to use it.

I second that! I had been fairly inactive on air over the last fewYou mean " soviet restrictions'
years, due to sport taking up a lot of my time, as well as social interests. Then along came COVID-19 and all the sovial restrictions.
Ham radio has turned out to be the perfect antidote, giving not only
safe social contact, but an endless stream of projects to work on. :)

I have no idea what that drivel was about. :/ Came across as an incoherent ramble.

I have watched a couple of YT videos about packet radio BBSes. They do look pretty neat when you consider that the data is being sent via
radio instead of wired interfaces.
And remember the 1920s film METROPOLIS
I had difficulty reading most of that and making sense of it, but I am familiar with this movie. For a silent film, or any film, it was ahead
of its time.

I need to watch it again sometime soon.

Very true...but if you can...catch a version they did in the 80's with music from I believe Queen.

Yep. I've always been fascinated by packet radio BBSes. What kind of bps can they pull these days? I haven't seen one in action since the mid 90s and I think that might have topped out at 9600 bps.
I am not sure. I think that might be a question for the original poster. I am not actually a HAM... I just replied because I also find them somewhat fascinating. :)
Someone answer this!
