What software do you all suggest I use to open, read, reply, and send messages via qwk? During my dos years, I used bluewave but, by 1997, it was impossible to register the software from shareware. And had that nag screen. Daniel Traechin

Multimail. It's currently maintained and available for modern
OSs. I'm using Multimail right now.

I'll be the third to recommend MultiMail. I really like it a lot.

i just discovered that it is in the repos for kubuntu so i got it
now. unfortunately it's using vim as a text editor and i'm having
the damnest time saving the messag

In your home directory there will be a file named '.mmailrc'
Edit this file and you'll see where you can specify the editor
you'd like to use.
I prefer 'nano'.
I think the command you'd want in vim is: <Esc>:wq<Enter>

That's what I did. :) Only issue with nano is it can't do a word
wrap on the display only like Windows Notepad can, so you don't
get to see long paragraphs that you type, until the message is
actually posted. Other than that, nano is great.

Looks right to me. :)

Yeah, I've just got mine set up to wrap at about 70 columns and it
seems to be fine.

Hehe. I once was ambitious (foolish?) enough to think I might
"master" vi/vim one day... That was quite a few years ago and I have admitted defeat. I still use it occasionally but most of what I
do now is with nano. Including the writing of this message. :)

I'm an emacs guy myself.

But does that wrap the saved text as well? That doesn't look
great on terminals with widths other than 80(ish) columns. I
know nano can wrap text, but it saves the file that way too. I
only want wrapping on the screen, but not in the saved file.

If you use vi(m) all the time you could become a guru at it, but
I don't use it enough myself.

Doh! Sorry to hear that... :) Just kidding. That's another
beast I have decided to not do battle with.
... Beware of programmers who carry screwdrivers.

I guess it does wrap the saved text also. Not sure what the right "compromise" is any more.

Yeah, it's one of those skills that's "use it or lose it".

FTN standard is no line breaks within paragraps. Some software
inclused so-called "soft CRs" that FTN software is supposed to
ignore, but they may help with local displays. Good old Windows
Notepad actually gets it right. If you turn word wrap on in
Notepad, it wraps nicely on the screen, but the text is saved as
a single unbroken line of text, which is perfect for FTNs.

Yep true. Something I'll stay firmly in the "lost it" camp with. ;)

Okay. There's been a lot of talk in recent weeks in various echos
about this subject, and it's hard to keep up with some of that stuff.
As an experiment, I've turned off wrapping in this message (in nano),
and so far this very long line keeps scrolling to the right with no wrapping. We'll see how it looks when posted, I guess. :)

Haha - I'm right there with ya in the next tent over.
