I saw this on the news. Living in Florida and only 5 miles from SpaceX and KSC local news was saying the same thing. SpaceX said they are prepared to send up a Dragon to go get out astronaut ...

I read that as of today, 3/15/22, Russia is 100% gonna give him a ride back to the rock.

I think what would of happened would of been tasteless. I think a third nation hosts the space port Russia uses and I think it would of caused so much hate where the relationship would be unsalvagable for generations.

That would end any co-operation with Russia on anything scientific and start
    a new Space Race.

And then we'd be guaranteed a third season of Space Force on Netflix.

I'm not sure that's all that would happen. Abandoning an astronaut, stranding them in an extremely hostile environment, is a little too close to actively murdering him/her. And I would imagine the US would get pretty cranky if the Bear started killing US citizens...

Obviously, the environment *inside* the ISS isn't hostile. But it's fragile.
A stray bolt, orbiting in the opposite direction, would have more kinetic energy on impact than any bullet, dummy shell, or cannonball ever fired on Earth. And outer space has a zero-tolerance stance on mistakes.

I think we're already in that situation, for other reasons, atm. While the US would have sent up one of its several space travel options to get the astronaut, I too think the space situation should be kept separate from other issues - thats easy to say; Russia knows the US is capable of pulling the astronaut out, but its pretty lame to even warn that they might leave the atronaut up there.

Poor astronaut. I am sure he is fine up there, far from the messup we are making down here. Why are we bent in brining him back here so we can share our missery with him?
