For some reason I regularly hunt down old compters at the local
recycling centre and bring them home with me to fix up. The process
mostly takes more time to be called " a productive afternoon", but I
kinda like the nostalgia of it. I was wondering if I'm kinda the only
one doing this ?

Nope. Our local recycling center, unfortunately, has a policy of scrapping anything with a CRT, though.
But I do enjoy getting an old system and fixing it up. I'd do it more often but I have too many space constraints.

Even the local thrift stores no longer sell them. Have seen pallets
full out back wrapped up to go wherever. From what I understand...with laws in Oregon...they may not be able to resell them. Not sure about
that.
This is why I love the mini systems...such as the Commodore systems and the retail version of the Lenovo PC I picked up off Ebay for $50 with a DVD drive.

The local recycler told us that (for them, at least) there was a benefit from
the gov't for getting rid of CRTs (both in money and not having to handle certain "hazardous materials"), but that benefit had a time limit.
That's my my local Goodwills would take old TVs for a while, then put up a sign
telling people that was ending, and now will not take CRTs anymore.

Most of mine are small and/or portable. But items with the larger CRTs need to
have a permanent desk space. The others can be stored on a shelf until I want
to play with them.
While living in Twin Falls about 10 years ago...found a 19" Dell CRT monitor at the Salvation Army thrift store for $5-10 US. Didn't want to haul it to Colorado...so just left it with my former roommate.
