Surely.. but come on... how much power do you need to send 80x25 bytes through the wire? I'd rather suspect the networking interface ain't fast than it's CPU that lacks of power over there.

It's got a 33 megahertz 68030 chip! It's doing the best it can!

I remember when BNR/Nortel Switches used the Motorola chips. Just think these processors managed phone calls, and still do! I don't remember the specs now that was many years ago!

I was a telecom manager in a former life, and I remember those systems well. Nortel started with their own chips. I was one of the first sites on the west coast to use one of their systems with a motorola CPU. They went up to a 68040, then went Intel. Instead of designing on bare iron, they ended up porting their environment to a series of applications and ran it under VxWorks.

If they didn't go belly-up, they could have done great things. Their SIP stuff was pretty great, I ended up networking 3 sites using SIP over my data network and retired an old MPLS network we had been using.

Yep, it and the reference book was designed as a companion to an operating systems design class taught by the author.

Like I mentioned, since it was meant for teaching, the code is straightforward. I hadn't written C code for probably 10 years and could make sense of the MINIX code when I walked through it.

I have an IP filter in front of the BBS and when the BBS detects a malicious login attempt, it tells the filter to start blocking that IP. I had failed to put any sort of time out in my blocking code, so once blocked the IP was
always blocked. I've changed the code to unblock after 5 minutes, so please
try again.

(To be clear, it blocks the IP for trying to login as root or another well known username because I get hundreds of bots trying to log in each day.)

I just tried it myself and had the same result.

It appears bbs.m68k.club has an AAAA record as well and my machine prefers IPv6. The BBS doesn't seem to have anything listening on IPv6 though. Forcing IPv4 got me a login prompt.

I got a login pronpt, tried to create an account, but never got to enter my password. Then I disconnected and was unable to reconnect.

I just fixed a misbehaving extension on that machine that was causing the machine to freeze randomly for up to 30 seconds at a time. I think this is
what was causing problems during login and the slowness that people were seeing. Please try again and let me know if you run into issues!

I have also procured a modem, so I will try to set up a dial-in number this weekend if I can get it working properly.

oh, now I get it. I mistook it with xenix from microsoft.
Minix is Tanenbaum's (the professor behind the OS development books and academic curriculum).

Still same case, I think I need to install it one day.

I remember Tanenbaum's discussion with Torvalds on the usenet in the 90s.
