GT, of course, is from the era where you had to dial out using a modem.
I have never tried it with Windows or DOS but, under OS/2 with VMODEM,
if you set the COM port in GT to the virtual modem and put a telnet address into the phone number field, GT is a very excellent telnet BBS
This is a shot in the dark, but could you find a version of tcpser that would work on the 286? That should create the "virtual serial port" you are looking for. I have not done this, but thought it might be an option.
So far my limited research hasn't turned up anything VMODEM like for win 3.1 or dos but I'll keep looking.
