• Non-game games

From Bob Worm@21:1/205 to All on Wed Aug 23 15:53:20 2023
Way back in time, long before the Internet arrived, I'm sure we all found ourselves sat in front of a computer belonging to someone else or a school or workplace which didn't have any games or playthings installed.

I know I used to tool around with any computer I could get access to and it would keep me amused. In school that might have involved editing AUTOEXEC.BAT to briefly display "infected by fart virus" during boot so I could watch the poor metalwork tech who inherited responsibility for the school's computers trying to clean it with Norton AntiVirus half a dozen times.

My mate Martin, being way more pure of heart, had a game with his friends where they would use 2 BBC Micro computers with a shared floppy disc drive (yes with a "c" in Acorn land. They would take it in turns to "bury" a file somewhere in the directory structure for the other to find it, then the other would hunt around to find it. I think they were allowed to move it mid game if the hunter allowed the disc to spin down so that the hider could access it again.

    Nerds.

Anyway - sorry for the novel, here's my question: What non-game games did you used to play (or do you still play) on retro tech?

    Thanks!

Oh man, I remember when I was first getting into linux. I only had like one flashdrive that I made a bootdisk, and I was so worried I would accidentily boot into Linux and gte into big trouble. Never actually happened tho.

You forgot to close the parenthesis.

Well, I sometimes like using nmap to randomly explore websites/telnets. I think once I got a "WIP" website for a automotive company. Also, spamming pacman -Syu every second.

I'm not sure if this counts but back in those days our schools required TI graphing calculators. You had to learn to actually use these things. We all ended up programing game and sharing them with each other. Then we would play each others games.

I used to love those games. Still do, in a nostalgic way. I have a graphing calculator that I only actually use for these old games hehe. Those things are awesome.

That absolutely counts... but what games did you make?

Been a life time since I played them but it was cool to remember. Haven't thought about that in years!

    Thanks for the nostalgia hit.

Nothing original. Basically everything was just sheets passed around school you typed in and had the game. It was still cool. I didn't learn it enought to make anything.
