• Deliberately, purposefully slow telnet

From fission@21:3/177 to All on Tue Jun 20 15:12:17 2023
    Howdy folks,

This might be a silly question, but I figured if anyone might know,
it could be this group here. :-)

I want to telnet to things but have the connection feel slow, as if
I were dialing on an old modem. Eg it would be nice to be able to
    simulate 300, 2400, 9600, etc, speeds.

My internet searching didn't come up with anything, except "rate
limiting" telnet connections, which is not really what I want to do.

Does anything like this exist? I'm normally using macOS or Linux as
my telnet client, so I'm ideally looking for something that runs on
    those.

    Many thanks!

If you are using a MAC, then you could use MuffinTerm. It enables you to simulate those slow speeds.

Probably not going to be immediately useful, but RLFOSSIL uses a speed reminiscent of 38.4k the down side is that this is a DOS solution for telnet service on a system that doesn't natively support it.

While I can understand you wanting it to feel like a dialup experience. Even local logons at this speed become somewhat wearing after a while, being used
    to much higher throughput.

Natively for OSX or Linux I don't know of anything similar.

I'll have to look up RLFOSSIL for my old Spitfire Dial-up system to see if I can bring it online (TELNET) for cheaper than other companies want.

I have always kept my menus at minimum ANSI since the dial-up days. I log into other BBS' and it takes so long waiting for those pretty 120+ lines of animated ANSI screens to scroll by (because most of the time ESC or SPACE fails to stop them from continuing). The only time I see a slowness in my screen render times is when I'm getting those 23/2323 TELNET attacks over and over until my new Firewall blocks them (I brought it down to 3 hits within 90 seconds after watching some attempt to access manually - seeing the passwords they are typing - or their BOT simulates slower typing speeds.)

Hmm the only large ANSI I have is the logo screen during logon. But even
that feels like it takes a couple of weeks to load at this nominal "38.4" speed. Stuff like "The Reader" light bar driven message reader is also
pretty woeful. Still horses for courses... and I'm somewhat spoiled by
having much faster terminals in this day and age. Most menus aren't bad, but I've gotten to used to pages zipping up almost instantaneously.

Run SyncTerm, set the speed individually for each BBS entry and you
should be good to go. SyncTerm will allow you to configure many, many
options and it even "feels" like an old school (think DOS?) app. :)

As many have pointed out, Syncterm should allow you to do this. That said, finding a retro board running retro software and possibly retro hardware
    may also do the trick.

Yep, SyncTerm should fill their needs.

As far as retro boards running real hardware and software, you can find multiple examples here:

The DarkForce! BBS (mine) is also listed on there. Yep, a fine example of blatant and unrepentant self-advertisement if I ever saw one... :)

Hey, thanks everyone who replied with suggestions! It seems the
general consensus is that it will be easiest to do in the terminal
    program.

I will try MuffinTerm and SyncTERM at some point. But actually I
realized that a terminal program I was already using, analogterm2,
    could already do this.

(And yeah, as Spec and maybe others point out, the very slowest
speeds get old quickly... I didn't last long at 110/300. 1200/
    2400/9600 seem better for experimentation.)

    Cheers!

If I remember right, I think SyncTerm on Linux will "honor" the baud
    rate.
