Hey friends, I've been on an Apple kick recently. Anyone else into vintage Apple gear?

I have two Bandai Pippin game consoles, neither of which work. There aren't really any games for them anyway but it would be cool if they worked lol.

I have an Apple IIGS with some upgrades and a ton of old Apple II games. I love that thing. I play Oregon Trail end to end pretty frequently :) It's amazing with the old keyboard, old sound/speakers, vintage Apple CRT...takes me back to first grade.

I also have a Mac Mini G4 with the "silent upgrade" (i.e., the upgraded Radeon card that they never announced and only exists in a handful of them). I use this for MorphOS primarily. It works very well for that purpose. I did an SSD swap and I /think/ that's the only modification.

A friend recently donated to me a Performa 6112CD which I've updated quite a bit - BlueSCSI V2 card, Sonnet accelerator, maxxed out the RAM, added a VRAM card. She works great! I'm trying to figure out the ideal software package to use here...I don't think OS 9.2.2 is providing any specific benefit over an older version of Mac OS however I'm not sure what compatibility looks like for the Sonnet card going farther back. My goal is to use it as a period correct OS7/OS8 gaming machine, just for the heck of it. Resurrecting this machine has been quite a lot of fun.

I also recently picked up a PowerMac G4 "Quicksilver" and have been modifying the heck out of it. I found a stash of old Sonnet PCI cards which work with this machine and with OS9. I've decided to make this the "world's most outrageous OS9" machine :P I have PCI USB, Firewire, and SATA, which includes OS9 support and can even boot natively into OS9. I have maxed the RAM and currently am doing a PSU swap into a modern PSU simply because I am going to upgrade the CPU to some modded 2ghz thing and I don't want the measly stock PSU to fail the extra power draw. My goal here is to build an OS9 gaming machine but also to use OS9 native audio editing software for a classic DAW.

I've got a Powerbook G4 1.67GHZ 17" laptop which is a hefty beast and a very capable machine. I've maxed out the RAM and installed an SSD. It's flawless, somehow I found an extremely clean machine and it works great. I have OSX 10.4.11 on one partition and OSX Sorbet Leopard on another. I also have Gentoo linux running on a partition but frankly I never use it. This machine would be great for MorphOS but I am fine just using the Mac Mini for that, so no need to purchase another MOS license lol.

Finally, the coup de grace, my PowerMac G5. It's a dual processor 2.7GHz with 8GB RAM and the fastest GPU available (think it's an X850XT or something). It has a MOTU PCI card and I have a couple MOTU rackmount units. Right now this machine is used for gaming and screwing around, using the internet, basic computing stuff, but ideally I'd like to use it as an OSX DAW machine as well.

Anyway I was just messing with some of these machines so figured I'd do a mini writeup here. Not so mini, by the looks of things. hehe.

Lots of Mac love I'm sure. I've been a fanboi for a long time. Enough that
I'm running this BBS on a MacSE using System 6. I'm also really into
vintage SGI - that is very early IRIX and SGI systems from the late 1980s.
And running vintage CGI software on them.

My Favourite Mac is my SE/30 with a 40mhz 030 and Ethernet. Close second
is my Portable and then my Q800 (for AUX). I use a modern mac everyday.

Well yes and no.. anything pre mac is an Apple, anything post mac is a
furphy, from Mac corporation. That said, I still don't have anywhere to get much set up, the pooty room is still under construction.

I'm sitting on, a Clone+, Clone-e and a IIgs ROM1. I also have a variety of bits, many of which are kind of useless in this day and age, some I don't really know how to use properly, and some that are a bit interesting but
appear faulty. Looking forward to getting it all out and making them useable again.

Hey friends, I've been on an Apple kick recently. Anyone else into vintage Apple gear?

Although I've mainly been a PC/DOS/Windows user at home, I sometimes have a fondness for 90s Apple Macs, since those were often used in the schools I went to when I was growing up. Sometimes I've thought about buying a beige Power Mac G3 tower and maybe playing some games on it (and it would be a bonus if it would be able to get onto ethernet and access the internet). I've seen some good examples for sale online, but usually someone else buys it before I can. Also, the asking prices for some of them are a bit much though, IMO. I've seen people trying to sell ones that are a bit upgraded for around $1000 or more, and it seems a little steep, even if it is upgraded.

Also, I started college in January 1999, which was right around the time when Apple started making translucent Macs. The first iMacs were released in 1998 (I believe), and then the G4 cube and translucent G3 and G4 towers. My college had a row of G3 (or G4?) Mac towers in their computer lab, which was otherwise PCs.

I had a Mac IIci with a cache card, 12 mb of RAM and a 1gb SCSI drive. That was one of my favorite systems, ever. Never crashed, outlasted most of the other IIcis at my office at the time.

Not really, I have a Power Mac G4 that I haven't used in ages it can run
mac os 9.2 pretty well and up to snow leopard i think. Also can run
morphos last time i checked, but that's too expensive for me.

I should get it out again, but I really don't have room to set it up.

The clones I have aren't terribly exciting. They're pretty much just bog standard copies. No extras, like a built in Z80 or anything. On the other hand locally at a reasonable price II+ and IIes have become hard to find.
They both came with a variety of cards though so that was something.

The + still has floppies on it. The IIe gets a "floppulator" floppy emulator and occasionally shares a MicroDrive Turbo with the IIgs, although I'd like
to lay hand to a rev C or HS SCSI card for it. The GS usually has the MicroDrive, a VidHD in it, which I'm not over impressed with, I need to find another old 3:4 early LCD TV with SCART on it. Works a charm with no extra hardware, custom cabling required though.

Always say on the GS, you'll never notice the accelerator until you take it out. But there's a lot of stuff that doesn't seem any quicker, even loading GS/OS. Sure if you time it it'll be quicker, but doesn't feel it, at least
    to me.

I need to figure out how best to use the GS. I honestly don't know my way around the software side of things very well. I'd like to boot straight to GS/OS and have a game launcher...basically, that's all I want to do with this :) but I haven't invested the time in figuring out how it really works.

GS/OS wasn't something I was even aware of until somewhat recently and I was actually blown away how mature it was for its time. It was like MacOS before there was a MacOS, it was impressive!

I'd have to go back and see what you had installed now. For most GS games you're going to want some kind of mass storage. There's a few around some
more pricey than others. If you have to rely on floppy emulation it'll still involved a lot of disc swapping. Probably worth having a look at TotalReplay its an image with a raft of II games, older non GS specific.

The GS had a lot of firsts. GS/OS first colour OS, first with ADB on it,
first with some real sound on it too from memory.

I have storage, can't remember specifically what the hardware is but basically I have a CF card inside that is used as a HDD. And thanks for the rec for TotalReplay! I've not heard of it but found it on archive.org so that's a good start.

I'm with Macs since 2011. Lots of love and love-crisis, especially last 3 years before they introduced M1 chips.. but still I can't call it retro yet :)

I wish I knew though how to properly install and use Shapeshifter on my Amiga. Some folks in my hood played with that a lot in the 90s but this is long forgotten knowledge, I'm not sure if I can retrieve anymore.
