I wanted to patronize my local record store but they do not carry the esoteric stuff I like. And since the record industry is radically different special orders are more difficult and I have to resort to Amoeba, Deepdiscount or Amazon.co.uk/amazon.fr to get stuff.
These days I looks for people selling collections and then
go through and sell off what I don't want to keep, usually
making my money back.
That said, I'm not doing so well with 3,500 CDs :)
Is your list viewable somewhere?

I'm still working on it. The problem is I have discs
everywhere so it's hard keeping track of where they are
when I need to move them for some reason. lol

Hello Nigel Reed!

I feel your pain. I have a similar situation but I only had
about 2500 CDs at peak. However, I've probably whittled it
down to 2200; I went througha little phase of getting rid of
dupes (which I was surprised I had!) ..and CDs that I was very
confident that I wasn't going to bother with anymore.
There once was a very fine app called Shelfie. With it, you
could take pictures of the SPINE of any book, and it would
produce a data-record of the cover, title, author, isbn code,
publisher, etc. It was truly very clever and convenient. I
could just take a picture of the books filed on a shelf (or
just a pile of books on the floor or lined up in a box in my
case) and it would produce a detailed list.
I've been collecting CDs since the early 90s and I don't have nearly that many.. Do you manage to actually find time to listen to all that music? :)
I picked up lots in batches which leaves me with a bunch
of CDs that I either don't want or don't need.
With one batch I picked up there was a whole load of
Christian and country (and probably Christian county) that
I would never listen to if my life depended on it.-+-
When you say "picked up" ..how does that work? Do you buy
collections sight unseen?

I setup a local MusicBrainz mirror and downloaded the Discogs database
and used a script to import the xml files, then I wrote a
PERL script that would look up the barcode or catalog
number. I have a barcode scanner and it was pretty easy to
rip through a bunch. Only problem is, I forgot which bunch
and where they are lol.
I've got about 400 in my closet, a bookshelf full in the
bedroom, several stacks in the hallway and a couple of
huge boxes under the wife's desk so that's where my
problem is. They're not sorted in any way and I don't
really have room to do it until I'm going to do some kind
of bubble sort lol. -+-
Sometimes. Generally you get a better deal when you buy a
bulk load rather than individual ones. I can then sort
through for the ones I want and off load the rest...that's
the theory anyway :) -+- SBBSecho
But the supply of CDs from someone's collection may be diminishing.
Some might be attainable at a yard sale, but that option is not available to me. --
