Great talent. There is a video of him singing one of his songs
that he wrote coming out of some major life-struggle/surgery or
something. Amazing art of poetry in that one. I'll audition
my collection and report back on which one it is. It's
impressive because the studio recording is the SAME "live"
    perfect performance in the video.

I also note that his vocal "sound" is quite unique and
fascinating. It's like he found the magic formula for the
chord-combo for his voice and sticks to it for most of the
    tunes.

It makes me sad that his demons got him. For instance...was reading something his daughter mentioned that while he was growing up...his mother told him that she wished she had never had him. This being the case...I can understand this...since I've seen things like this in my own life.

Please let me know. Probably have the song in my collection.

Very true! Having worked in classic rock stations over my life...heard stories that people like Clapton and others wanted to work with him when he hit it big on his own. He didn't like touring or support his albums...which I heard was because of what happened with Steelers Wheels legal issues during the mid-70's.

Makes me VERY happy there are others who enjoyed him...especially since he left us way too early. Not only that...but "Baker Street" is going to be the main song played at my memorial service. Want to see a great cover of this...Rick Springfield has been recently doing his cover of the song. Blows me away on how the song may've sounded before Ravencroft was brought in for the sax part.

Another one which blows me away is Al Stewart...especially where his most famous work was done with Alan Parsons as the producer. Add to that my vanity call letters from the FCC: KA0TT.

I haven't heard of him.. His name isn't familiar to me (and I'm 42, if that means anything).

He got his start with a group called "Steelers Wheel" in the early '70's. After this group broke up and numerous lawsuits which kept from releasing any albums until the late '70's. In the late '70's...he released "City to City". This album has many of his most famous hits...such as "Baker Street". After that...he released "Night Owl". You Tube has several of the video appearances from this period.

Was a massive hit...along with several others on "City to City". He refused to tour or work with others (Eric Clapton & such) who wanted to work with him. Have heard this was because of what happened from "Steelers Wheel".

For the rest of his life...he would do some concerts...but he ended up dying of liver cancer from his demons. If I remember right...he was on tour & kept telling people he was going to continue touring...but died.

Thing about "Baker Street"...it will be playing at my memorial service.

It is a good song, and he had maybe one other "big" hit, but that was
about it. I always liked his voice, but he never seemed to take that
next step and move up to the big time. I'd call him a borderline "one-hit-wonder".

Ah, yep, just looked it up, and I've heard that a lot. I used to listen to a classic rock radio station when I was in high school, and it seems like that's one of those songs that I've heard so much that I almost tire of hearing it. Sometimes I've listened to Dave Ramsey's financial advice show on the radio, and he uses that song as his theme song.

Make sure to check out a double album set I got off Amazon of "City to City"
"Night Owl". Both together were cheaper than each one by itself.

The guitar solo on Baker Street might be my favorite ever.

Oh yeah! Just got this I think others would be interested in.

The musician behind one of the most recognisable saxophone solos - on Gerry Rafferty's hit Baker Street - has died. Raphael Ravenscroft, 60, who found fame almost overnight following the release of the 1978 track, died following a suspected heart attack early on Sunday.Oct 21, 2014

Very sad. On the other hand...Candy Dulfer is still around & put on a great show.

I checked it out too. It looks like an interesting project,
being one person was playing 3 roles (drummer, percussionist,
and something else) and the keyboardist was also the singer?

Good enerergy and passion by all.

I bet it was a lot of fun to stitch all that together in a
    synchronized way.

But.. I still think the original was better. I missed the
harmonies and that special vocal "sound" from Rafferty's
    version.

Shawn Colvin + David Crosby do a very sombre bluesy version.
    No sax.

Waylon Jennings' version is very recognizable to the original.
    But no sax.

Jonathan Coulton's version is a near dupe with the sax.

Maynard Ferguson's sounds like a cross between the Batman TV
theme and something that James Last would do for a party LP.

Ann Wilson's version stands out very lyric centric, meaning the
words are the focus. Good musical energy.

Exotique, no lyrics, pretty much ALL sax! Elevator music on a
    bit of steroids.
