Am I the only one left who has always enjoyed his music?
Seems like when I play it on my bluetooth speaker after the
store closes while working...people don't remember him or
his music. Working with a lot of people in their 20-
30's...they have no idea of who he was.

Great talent. There is a video of him singing one of his songs
that he wrote coming out of some major life-struggle/surgery or
something. Amazing art of poetry in that one. I'll audition
my collection and report back on which one it is. It's
impressive because the studio recording is the SAME "live"
perfect performance in the video.
I also note that his vocal "sound" is quite unique and
fascinating. It's like he found the magic formula for the
chord-combo for his voice and sticks to it for most of the
tunes.

A tear-jerker for me.
From what I remember, he struggled with alcohol and some
personal demons leading to depression. Dead at 63 - from liver
failure and complications from that.

Most of our Pandora-ing is Yacht Rock dinner music - Michael
McDonald, Steely Dan, Doobies, Christopher Chross, and Gerry
Rafferty.
And that guy who sang the "Pina Colada" song, talk about two people
who deserve each other!

I haven't heard of him.. His name isn't familiar to me (and I'm 42, if that means anything).

You've probably heard "Baker Steet" among others but the name
never clicked.
It's an awesome tune.

It's an awesome tune.
It is a good song, and he had maybe one other "big" hit, but that was
about it. I always liked his voice, but he never seemed to take that
next step and move up to the big time.
I'd call him a borderline "one-hit-wonder".

There are many artists with the skills but hitting it big
requires luck as well.

I have another one-hit-wonder from about the same time. Driver's
Seat by Sniff 'n' the Tears.
He got his start with a group called "Steelers Wheel" in the early '70's. After this group broke up and numerous lawsuits which kept from releasing any albums until the late '70's. In the late '70's...he released "City to City". This album has many of his most famous hits...such as "Baker Street". After that...he released "Night Owl". You Tube has several of the video appearances from this period.

Ah, I know Steelers Wheel. City to City and Night Owl don't ring a
bell though..

I did not know that! Steelers Wheel's "Stuck in the middle with you"
is on heavy rotation on our 70's Pandora channel.

I only know his two big hits but they are great songs. His 'City To
City' album is one of many classics I've never owned and it's on my 'to buy' list as I've heard from others that it's excellent.
The guitar solo on Baker Street might be my favorite ever.

That's the one I should have included too on my list, a great track for getting out of the studio to the loo and back
Make sure to check out a double album set I got off Amazon of "City to City" "Night Owl". Both together were cheaper than each one by itself.

Want to hear what the original sounded like before the sax was used...look f Rick Springfield's version live. Not a big fan of his...but his version blew away. There are also outtakes of what the guitar version was like before the added the sax.

Just saw one video of a live performance. Less than 100k views,
I think. Anyway.. the real star of that *is* the sax player.
Here's the link for Rafferty's 1st solo album: https://www.amazon.com/music/player/albums/B01JDANHG6?ref=sr_1_10&keywords =gerry+rafferty&crid=W8F0KS5W9WAC&sprefix=gerry+r%2Caps%2C234&qid=16533028 06&sr=8-10
Dave Grohl did a documentary about Sound City, ...
When the studio closed down, he bought the mixing board
and invited some of the alumni to jam on a record.
One of the tracks is called "The Man that never Was", and
it's Rick Springfield on lead with most of Foo Fighters
backing him.
It's a great CD.

I suspect there's a number of people who've covered this. It would be hard not
too for a good enough musician, but it's the perfect song and can't really be
improved on.

being one person was playing 3 roles (drummer, percussionist,
and something else) and the keyboardist was also the singer?
Good enerergy and passion by all.
I bet it was a lot of fun to stitch all that together in a
synchronized way.
But.. I still think the original was better. I missed the
harmonies and that special vocal "sound" from Rafferty's
version.
Shawn Colvin + David Crosby do a very sombre bluesy version.
No sax.
Waylon Jennings' version is very recognizable to the original.
But no sax.
Jonathan Coulton's version is a near dupe with the sax.
Maynard Ferguson's sounds like a cross between the Batman TV
theme and something that James Last would do for a party LP.
Ann Wilson's version stands out very lyric centric, meaning the
words are the focus. Good musical energy.
Exotique, no lyrics, pretty much ALL sax! Elevator music on a
bit of steroids.

One thing I'm impressed with is everyone who even knows who he was. Work in retail around MUCH younger people & they have no idea of what to do
