Just wanted to kick off a thread about favorite 80's bands, artists, songs.

I'm a fan of the synth pop bands from that period. Erasure, Ultravox etc.

    What do you like?

Mostly metal. Was a long hair headbanger back in the '80s. Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, stuff along those lines along with classic rock. Interestingly enough I like a lot of the pop stuff as well. Duran Duran, Prince, Michael Jackson. Never know what my play list in my car is going to come across.

Frustrates my wife when she's riding in my car. Might hear Rick James (superfreak) and then go into something recent from the Black Keys, then some King Crimson or ELP and then a bit of Black Sabbath.

As a professional radio announcer/dj most of what I played in the 80s was pretty ecletric. Anything from soft rock to metal... but always a safe bet
    with classic stuff.

Sign of the Hammer rocked very hard. It makes you want to grab a sledgehammer and search for giants to slay.

A lot of people started complaining when Louder than Hell was released. I think they still made some good stuff and certainly don't understand the hate that much. Things only started getting really weird after the Sons of Odin deal, after which it was clear the band was dying. Thunder in the Sky still had somethig good in it, but you could tell Joe was turning the band into his little bitch to play with her as he pleased.

My favourite Manowar album is Kings of Metal. It deserves that position if only for featuring Hail and Kill and Heart of Steel.

I don't think liking Michael Jackson is weird. He did a kind of hard sort of pop. A lot like some of Bryan Adams pieces.

A lot of metalheads like classical music too. Specially the melodic, bombastic ones.

Yep I worked on stations that were mostly Hot AC and CHR formats. I also did some student radio (University) which is where I really found a passion for
the industry and was lucky enough to get some mid-dawn work when I would go back home for semester and Christmas/New Year breaks. There was a start up FM station running short term broadcasts for 6-8 weeks in my home town. It was made up of ex Student Radio guys from the Uni I was attending. They were chasing a full time commercial warrant to broadcast in what was (at the time)
a highly regulated industry and one largely dominated by government run
    public broadcasting stations.

Long story short they got the warrant, I kept doing holiday work for them on-air while finishing my studies. After another two years I finished uni and sent out tapes and CV to all the stations in the country.

Got a few offers but turned a few down as they were more sales vs on-air or
(in one case) a station run in a way where it was clear the staff were
    unhappy with management.

I ended up getting called up by a PD and asked to come to an interview for a
a station shifting from AM to FM and changing format from night talk to (what was the first of it's kind at the time in NZ) a love song dedications format.

I got the job, moved to a new city and did that shift for around 2 years,
then moved to afternoons and did that for another 4 years.

    I could go on :)

It's content I have bought and own.

With licensing we use a crowd called 'One Music' here in NZ

    [snip]

OneMusic is a joint licensing initiative between APRA AMCOS and Recorded
Music NZ. Many music creators around the world earn an income by granting organisations, like ours, the right to collect and pay their royalties.

OneMusic simplifies the licensing process and allows music users to meet
their copyright obligations to play our music in their business.

Thanks Henk. I'll likely work on starting to post song data again into fsxNet down the track. There was a period when I was doing this into a BOT echo for the fun of it. Having moved to different systems and OS that's been on the
back burner at present. But at one stage folks in fsxNet could netmail a BOT and get music auto added to the playlist :)

That's primarily what I did as well, with some AOR and oldies mixed in. Its really helped my likes in music pretty eclectric. The first commercial station I was at was an ultra high energy CHR called hot hits! A couple guys really flaked out as it was an intense format to do. No talk-ups unless it was a ballad, only over outros. Jingle after every song too! I mean after EVERY song! Only the actual top 40 were on the playlist, with the top 15 in heavier rotation. Imagine in 1977 having to hear "You Light Up My Life" 4-5 times a DAY! lol

Got a few offers but turned a few down as they were more sales vs
on-air or (in one case) a station run in a way where it was clear the staff were unhappy with management.

We called the sales area "the snake pit" <G> I never had any interest in
sales. I hated doing news. I did on-air and commercial production. I'd save other talent's outtakes and splice together an annual montage for our office holiday party... tons of laughs!

I applied at this one small town CHR once, and the PD did all but laugh
at me. When I was doing CHR in our 40th largest market he did part time
and when he was listening to me he told me that one of his biggest mistakes
    was not hiring me.

Just wanted to kick off a thread about favorite 80's bands, artists, songs.

I'm a fan of the synth pop bands from that period. Erasure, Ultravox etc.

    What do you like?

My oh my I could go on forever. Let's start with: Gary Numan, Thomas Dolby (A brilliant guy besides a good musician) Devo, Kraftwerk, New Order, Depeche Mode, OMD, The Human League, Pet Shop Boys, Soft Cell, Joy Division, Thompson Twins, Heaven 17, Yello, Art of Noise, ABC, Flock of Seagulls....
And of course from New Zealand Split Enz.

    Jeff

... My reality check just bounced

You can keep erasure :P I did enjoy Ultravox, The Church were also pretty nifty, "Under the MilkyWay". We had a raft of pub rock bands that were still kicking at that stage.... The Angels, Hunters and Collectors, Noiseworks all come to mind. PLus a few strange really local offerings like "The Melody Lords"

Shrug, more likely system time is a tad wonky. If the TZ is still there it ought to be correct although it might be on AEDT rather than AEST... I did
have to do some jiggery pokery with it when I beat The Reader into doing JAM instead of just using the HUDSON base. Will have a look, I probably have multiples of that batch file kicking around too... it took some voodoo to try and make it work on one bat from different software...

No idea... there's a slim possibility its a fault in the file system. I have NFS running in ASYNC for speed, but it means that writes are not confirmed. Meaning it could be the next file operation begins before the last write is finished, perhaps truncating the TZUTC line...

This seems unlikely though, as I can see the TZ line appear in other
messages, or its hit and miss. I'll have to find some JAM utils that function in hmm WIN7 and have a look at the message bases themselves to get any
    further details.
