• Update Frequency

From apam@21:1/126 to All on Fri Nov 20 11:50:52 2020
    Hi guys

I'm keen to release v0.5 soonish, but wondering how people feel about the frequency of updates?

While I don't imagine keeping up this frequency, I am thinking hatching
out too often could be annoying for people. So I'm thinking of putting a minimum time between update to say a week?

Does that sound ok? It might be longer than a week, but no sooner, unless
there is some emergency security bug?

Stuff that's coming in v0.5: full screen editor, interbbs oneliners,
inter-node messaging and some more tweaks :)

I think the freq will depend on when you feel there's new stuff to share /
fix. If it's urgent send it out sooner, else if not urgent but changes
reflect a fairly significant change then I'd work to something less demanding in the way of any timetable. Probably best not to have a timetable :)

Yeah, I wasn't really suggesting a timetable, just that for usual new
features and such if i do a bunch of new features in a short while I'll
sit on them until at least a week passed since the last one, usually I
imagine it will be a lot longer than a week. I just don't want to give
people update fatigue or clog peoples inboxes.

I'm certainly not suggesting an update every week. That would be burnout
    coming quickly I imagine.

Yep, I just don't want to flood people with a new release every other
day. With magicka, I let people have access to the git repo - while I
could do that this time, I decided not to because I often commit stuff
when it is broken, because it's easier for me to git push from my
development machine then git pull on my testing machine.

With "releases" people get a snapshot where i'm pretty sure it works.

Just writing this, I'm actually pretty pleased with myself about this
editor.. sure breaks lines at 75 columns, but it's not crashed yet...

    (Famous last words??)

    Lol

    Nope still didn't crash....

    Hehe. I'm pushing it...

I've got it set up as v0.x for minor changes vx.0 for major, I do also
have v0.5-xxx where xxx is a string (i'm using "dev" for now, but could
be a build number I suppose if I was doing lots of minor updates.

Well there's definitley some bugs in the full screen editor. I've managed
to trigger them today, but not sure how I did I think it was deleting
    long paragraphs...

Also when getting to the end of screen, sometimes it doesn't refresh
    right..

I'll get it eventually I guess.

I'm a user who's poking around with Talisman but not running it facing the internet. I'm OK with whatever you decide, but more releases don't bother me since I'm not really RUNNING Talisman.

I'm thankful for all you do, apam.

You can use magiedit on the linux version, I was using it here to start
with. Magiedit has it's own problems though, and the code was getting to
    be a big mess.

I think I've fixed most of the bugs, they were just little off by ones,
but there is still a problem when pressing backspace and the next line
appends to the one your on.

Little things like that.. haven't had a crash in a while though, so
    that's good :)

Gotcha. If I have time I may try to cram a dos message editor in there

Yeah, it should. I guess you'd have to use netfoss etc.

It is supposed to use QuickBBS style for the external editor, and it puts
the MSGTMP / MSGINF in the temp/[node]/ folder.

So you'd just have your external editor line in the talisman ini to point
to a batch file that loads up netfoss and the dos editor.

This maybe a dumb question... could one use the old (or current, I think.) iceEdit? I always liked that editor and if it would plugin with TALISMAN that would be cool.

You might be able to on Windows 32 bit, but not on a pi. The dosbox
method I mentioned earlier won't work too well if someone's trying to
write a message on 2 nodes at a time, which is more likely than running
    the same door.

Shows what I know, about IceEdit and using it with TALISMAN - I didn't even think about how it would be 'a door'... understood..
