• Windows 11 on a T450s

From poindexter FORTRAN@21:4/122 to All on Sun Feb 9 09:36:03 2025
    I've got a Thinkpad T450s, think it's got a i7-5500u CPU, 12 GB of RAM,
and was running a current install of Windows 10. It's definitely not
supported by Microsoft for Windows 11. I downloaded a Windows 11 ISO
image from Microsoft, used Rufus to burn it to a USB stick, told it to
ignore the memory and TPM checks.

I booted to Windows 10 and ran the setup program from the USB stick.
Told it to do an upgrade, and let it run. Came back after running
errands to find it sitting at a Windows 11 login.

So far, everything looks good and everything I had is running. CPU usage
was pegged for a while, but I think that was defender and the store app scanning/updating themselves.

I'm going to be using it instead of my desktop this week, will see how
it performs under more continual use.

"definitely not supported.. Windows 11". Are you looking for
    disaster? :D

yeah.. microsoft is in a bit of a bind in that respect. apple perhaps not so much because they sell hardware not an OS. that's a nice little machine, and if windows 11 runs on it why would you buy a new one?

microsoft has an incentive to convince you to throw away that hardware, because there's a small but probably measured chance you'll get a Surface computer from them. or worst case another PC with a licensed copy of windows, furthering the churn.

lenovo on the other hand.. their website used to have banners on all the driver download pages and information about older machines that "that machine you got from the e-waste recycler is dangerous!"

meanwhile it's still quite enjoyable to use my (a bit older) T530 Windows 7 machine to work on the BBS.. and that one WASTES 12GB of ram because it's a
    32-bit install ;)

Not too concerned about it - all of my data is elsewhere. If it does turn out I run into a showstopper issue with Windows 11, I have a Linux Mint ISO waiting in the wings for it. I'll be just fine. :)

Are you hoping for an operational Win11 so that you can "learn"
it? I've toyed with the idea of a separate Win11 machine so
that I could get familiar with its behaviour and features
incase someone needs help with the OS.

I have a T540[win7] next to me, but most of the time I use VNC
from the T60[xp] to operate it. :D

I've recently acquired and installed a fresh (probably not new)
keyboard for my T60[xp]. I was able to maintain the original
keyboard relatively clean from the DNA and other crap that
accumulates under the key caps over time, but lately, my C key
was not cooperating most of the time. I got tired of pounding
the C key multiple times until it registered. Plus, many of the
key lettering was mostly faded away resulting in highly shiny
reflective surfaces. The fresh keyboard is entirely matted
black. The Thinkpad designed keyboard is so nice to use! But..
    I digress.
