• Baldurs Gate 3 - first impressions

From hollowone@21:2/150 to All on Wed Dec 20 12:59:32 2023
Anybody could share your impressions from BG? I started playing and I have mixed feelings. Too much Original Sin for my taste, instead of free roaming exploration I have to be constantly focused on environmental struggling.

This is not how I remember BG experience.. but I'm still in first locations. I'll give it a bit more time.. still this games comes with some risky decisions for old-fashioned DnD players.

    Your thought?

You know, I have it on my computer but haven't yet played with it much. I need to give it a whirl. The original BG1 and BG2 games were my favorites back in the day.

What'd you think of Pathfinder: Kingmaker and games like that? I played them for a bit but lost interest (typical for me lol).

I like them all. Pillars, Tyranny, Pathfinder games. I haven't completed any yet, but still trying to return to them. Maybe that's the fate of this genre and maybe that's why I shouldn't have much of hard feelings toward BG3 either. :>

In Kingmaker I liked the story and options but then struggled in one combat battle that kept beating my ass and lost interest. I need to return to it, though.. one day! :)

Once you get past that and the world starts to open up you will have several quests to choose from. Depending on your choices doors will open and the world will feel a lot more open worldish.

Its not like any of the other BG games as the second one was more of a Diablo clone. Larian Studios held really close to the 5e rules. In fact I have been a GM for Rifts (paladium books) for 30ish years. After playing this and realizing how much more simple and fast the rules can be for 5e I invested in DND for the first time. I got a couple foundry servers up now and we all love it. We play weekly.

The game is very tactical and there is so much to do and explore. It does reward well for your exploration. It doesn't force any decision on your though so you are free to skip cheat or otherwise play like actual DND. I get that you can't do everything like you would in a tabletop game but they really tried to put options out there for you.

Give it until you get to actual Balders Gate. Maybe even try couch coop. We have had a ton of fun with that. Every time you play little things have rippling affects on the whole game experience.

Did your kill and steal the bosses sword in the ship of just get off it right away?

Not sure if PF has Save scumming but BG3 does. Save often and make multiple saves. IF there is something you want to do save scum it and get it. This is your game and you should get to play it your way.

I've never played Rifts but have always wanted to. The world seems so vast...super cool premise. I always thought it would make a great sci-fi movie or video game franchise. I wonder if there's some sort of doorgame potential in there...

This is a number of interesting hints, tips and first of all motivators to come back to the game. Thank you!

Did your kill and steal the bosses sword in the ship of just get off it right away?

Not really to both parts of the question. I did release the walking brain, I released that female cleric prisoner who is with me now once we came back to FR world. But no.. I did not care to kill the boss as he seemed to have a lot more HP that I was thinking the mind flyer can beat, so I just let them fight in the end. Thank you... now I consider to start over again! :)

I was close to trying to make a loose version more like LORD for it and couldn't find enought people to help program one. I only know a little python so it would be a huge undertaking for someone like me. Maybe someday.

It would make a great multi BBS MUD style game if anything.

I would like to see a Tabletop RPG supporter door game. You set a date and everyone gets on and it has chat with commands for dice rolls and character sheets

Cool thing about that is you could just play any RPG. I have a foundry server now so I would use that for all the automation but I bet there are old skewl RPGers that would use it

I wanted to show you the path your on already and the decisions you made matter. There are no wrong answers just different paths you end up on.

    Enjoy.

My son and I, along with a couple his friends have been playing Baldurs
Gate 3. So far, we're really enjoying it. Not a fan of what happens to
our characters from the get-go (no spoilers!) but overall, I'm liking it
    quite a bit.

Might have to consider checking it out. After all, it was featured on
    South Park. :)
