• Final Fantasy XVI

From Ganiman@21:3/174 to All on Mon Jun 12 11:43:38 2023
Final Fantasy XVI had a pre-launch event last night and the demo hit PSN today around the world. I think it looks great so far. I've got the demo installed and will dig into it later tonight. I've got the Collector's Edition, Dual Sense and a couple of Torgals ordered too.

Is anyone else in bbs-land planning to play?

I would do, if the game was going to be released for PC. But looks like I have to wait for now...

I've had it for a week and am maybe a little more than halfway through. What the game is trying to do and what it wants you to do are executed extremely well. There are things the game doesn't do as well as other Final Fantasy games too, for example, exploration is not well rewarded and you are almost better off going directly between points A and B during your main and side quests and not wasting a lot of time off of those paths. The story is fantastic, the combat works very well, the hunt marks are fun and can be challenging. It is highly enjoyable for me. I don't typically love doing tons of sidequests, but I havent skipped any so far because they aren't too daunting. It is heavy with cutscenes, and the balance between watching cutscens and actually playing can be off at times, but they are well done and engaging for the most part. I'd give it a 9/10 if I were scoring. Its a lot of fun, and like I said the things it is really trying to focus on it really nails.

I will say that the exploring thing doesn't matter until after you have beat the game. then you will want to have all the lillith statues and things like that. Remember the statues are permanent buffs across all characters. Even if you make a seasonal character. Once you have end game content going more map means more quests and more found dungeons, more loot ect. Right now get your horse. Thats what matters now then do what you want. I took so long getting to that part of the story because I wanted to do all the side quests as I went. So much faster once you have the horse. You get that at the top of Act IV.

Lost me when I had to wait 5 minutes for the shaders to load. Sorry, I'm not putting up with that. As far as I know, I'd have to put up with that each
time I played the game. I didn't put up with that with Harry Potter, I'm not putting up with that now. I only play games for about 10 minutes at a time, before I get bored so that would seriously cut into my play time.

Well, gotta say I really like her books and movies... :)

Actually, her attempt at having the series grow alongside the fans fell a bit flat with me.

When I was a kid and I read the early Harry Potter books, I found them to be adequate juvenile literature. Then Rowling decided to try having the series become mature at the same pace as its fans and ended up turning it into a something too similar to the urban fantasy flicks for young adults that cram shelves in book stores.

Lots of people love the result. I think it was quite meh.

I guess it made sense that they would grow older, isn't each book the next year at hogwarts? if she kept them all the same age, they would have to have a lot of adventures in a short space of time.

I don't think it was meant as an attempt to grow with the fanbase, rather just people growing up in general. Not all fans were kids when they read the first harry potter books or saw the movies.

Although I don't agree with her politics, or think her stories are particularly ground breaking masterworks, I did enjoy them, and she did get a lot of kids at that generation reading books instead of watching TV. :)
