• Unreal Torunament '99 free, alive, and well

From Nightfox@21:1/137 to All on Sat Jun 27 13:40:50 2026
After the original Unreal Tournament came out in 1999, I played that quite a bit and mainly enjoyed online deathmatch games. This might be old news to some, but recently I realized it has been made free to download & play, and there currently are active servers online.

In addition to Windows, it has also been made available for Linux and Windows. If you've bought it from Steam (game of the year edition), there's a v469 update you can download and unzip over your current files; you can also extract the Linux-native version there and run that. There are also full installers available.

I'll definitely be playing it. Maybe I'll see you on one of the servers? Could also be fun to have a regular game with us BBS people (and I'm still meaning to join one of your monthly Doom games... I know I keep saying that & haven't joined one yet, but I still want to).

July 3rd may work for me. I currently don't have plans for the 4th, but something could come up quickly.

The amount of hours I dumped into this game! Myself and a few local players were involved in the early creation and adoption of the GMC (Giant Map Community) where we played UT with low grav, instagib shock rifles, and maps where you were the size of an ant in reference. (Bathroom. RecRoom, BedRoom and a few others come to mind)

After seeing this post I started looking to see if the GMC was still around and found two servers with no players and sadly the old utgmc.com looks to be shutdown or will be soon.

Many fond memories, almost as dear as BBSes were that got me back into them.

A few daysa ago, I played a multiplayer game that was using one of those giant maps, which had a few other players in it. The number of users always seemed to fluctuate a bit.

I plan on playing this game more now that I've realized there are still active multiplayer servrs. I have some work travel coming up very soon though, and I'll be gone for 4 weeks, so I'll be unable to play during that time, unless I were to install it on my own personal laptop and bring that with me to play during my off hours..

Are you playing UT2004, 99, or Gold? Does it matter which one you install when you do multiplayer?

UT 99 - The one I mentioned recently. It does matter - As far as I know, Unreal Tournament 99 and 2004 (and Unreal Tournament 3) are separate versions of the game and you can't play multiplayer games with different versions. And it looks like Gold is a version of Unreal (not Unreal Tournament), so I'd suspect that wouldn't work with Unreal Tournament.
