• Fish and Chips in places not expected

Flew in Newfoundland, transfered to Gander. A long drive to small town, then after another 1-1/2 hour left the paved roads fora wildernes lodge. It was 55km off the nearest paved road, forded three goo sized streams/rivers until arrived near the camp. Last 2km were by ATV only.

About third or four day in I came in midday to change into dry clothes, and noticed a large amount of cod being defrosted. Figured it would be some sort of school cafeteria type baked cod that evening.

At dark my guide and I came in to find that Fish & Chips were being served
that night. Didn't get my hopes up (yet).

Our camp cook was a little guy named Moe, who while he certainly could cook
was a chain smoker and drank a significant portion of the camp's beer, and otherwise made himself scarce. I was told that Moe was proned to getting a
fat head, so not to wind him up.

Well the Fish and Chips were absolutely outstanding. Better than Chorlton Green (Manchester, England)'s reknown chippy, better than Gander and St Johns top chippies, better than the Duke of Duckworth in Halifax. Absolute premier class stand out fish and chips.

Well old Moe was kind of eyeing me up, wondering what the yank would think of the Fish and Chips. So I mentioned they were "mighty fine fish and chips"
and sort of left it at that.

Turns out Moe had run his own chippy for ten years or so, and had brought in
by ATV his deep fryer and gear, and had used his personal batter recipie. He had turned on the camp generator to run the chippy (I thought I had heard an engine noise in the distance during the afternoon) and had hid everything
away before guides and guests returned.

The fish was caught by a friend of the outfitter, cleaned an immediately
sharp frozen. I think it was a swap deal they made.

M<issing was the mushy peas (we had to make do withe tinned) but everything esle was world class, in the middle of nowhere four hours from the nearest
    town in a remote camp.

Where have you had a good Fish and Chips at a place not expected or likely?

    Howdy,

Where have you had a good Fish and Chips at a place not expected or likely?

So I dont recall if I have had a good Fish and Chip experience - but I have had a good Shephards Pie experience :)

I was on a tour in Africa - which started in Zimbabwe and covered Botswana and Zambia - it went for 21 days.

We had a tour chef, whose name was Smiley, and he not only was the chef but did anything else you wanted (washed clothes, repaired torn clothing, etc)..

After a week in, with awesome food three times a day, we started challenging him on what dishes he could make - especially since we were camping and he only used the campfire.

One day, I challenged him to Shephards pie. After a day of being a tourist, we came back to camp to the best Shephards pie that I have ever had (still to this day) - for 15 people. He cooked it completely on the open fire, meat was moist bursting with flavour with some veges that werent obvious to see, potato had a golden crust on top and it was perfect. There was no left over that night, and he cooked generously.

i really like to cook on campfire! 2 years ago i've found this youtuber
guy 'livingthevanlife' and i've learnt that you can make almost everything... if you have a knife and a dutch-oven. :) (BTW i totally recommend to check this guy's channel, awesome pictures, nice recipes)

My wife and I were on vacation and one motel we stayed at had a restaurant next

door. We walked over for dinner and going inside my wife looked at the interior

(It had not been remodeled since it opened 20+ years ago) and wanted to go. I presuaded her to stay and after looking over the menu there special for the night (it was friday) was fish and chips. We both ordered it and it was excellent. We told the waitress we really enjoyed our meal and jjust before she

brought the bill the chef came out to our table and thanked us for dining there, he was English and really funny too.
