• archives.thebbs.org files gone

From Nightfox@21:1/137 to All on Thu Jun 9 19:53:40 2022
Earlier, I was trying to download a file from archives.thebbs.org, and while their site is still up, and FTP site is still running, it seems their FTP site is empty. I was able to log into their FTP site (using a FTP program, since web browsers no longer support FTP), and I was able to log in (using "anonymous" for the username and an email address for the password), but when I do a ls, no files are listed. It seems their FTP site is empty.

Does anyone know if there is a mirror or backup of archives.thebbs.org available?

I was wondering this too. I think I tried ftp a while back but I think I had trouble then as well (as opposed to downloading via ftp in the web browser)

I think they might have had some funky detection in there to prevent people using ftp clients and leeching everything.

Seems the site is on auto pilot though, so might just be useless now.

I don't think it's just leach detection (I seem to remember some restrictions on the number of simultaneous downloads in the past). The files seem to just be gone from their FTP site now.

Yeah, sounds like it. I tried to log in via ftp as anonymous and it's very picky about using a REAL email address. What files were you looking for? Maybe they can be found elsewhere?

They had a newer version of The Online Pub (multi-user chat door) than what I'm using.

I've tried to search online for the filename, but Google came back with very few results, including a BBS that apparently is not running now, and what looks like a file archive in Germany that may only be accepting dialup connections.

With many old BBSes having disappeared, it seems like BBS files are fairly hard to find these days. Online search engines probably don't prioritize indexing this stuff because not many people are interested in it.

that site has never been about archiving for posterity.. it's all about gatekeeping and showing off the collection. we'd be better off if just
about anyone else had it. mirror it everywhere with hdd space. but that would take away the special place that archive holds.

the os2bbs guy was just as bad. protecting from mirroring .. all sorts of stuff that will be gone eventually because of lame pride.

"boohoo my bandwidth" - i don't buy it. i'll be the first to mail out an hdd. bet more excuses will come.

I think you might be confusing http://archives.thebbs.org/ with Anon-Archives. The former I think is hosted by the guy who does Netfoss, the latter Warmfuzzy.

i thought he put it on archive.org when he quit. I got it from there I think (or somewhere else, but i do have a copy of the os2bbs archive)

I can understand wanting people to get it from them after the work they put in curating such an archive (which i imagine is more work than mounting a few nightowl cds and copying the contents over), but I also think if you're not going to maintain it any more then it would be nice to make it available so someone can take over. they don't owe anyone though.

You can still download files off the web site if you have an old version of Internet Explorer. I'm using Internet Explorer 11.

It will ask you to login to the FTP. Just click on "Log on Annonomously" and you should be able to download.

this might be your issue. If your using a web browser many of them are removing FTP functionality. supposedly a security issue. If you search for it you will find a bunch of articles about it. If you still want to FTP you will need a client for it.

No worries :) No need to be sorry.

Yeah, the archives.thebbs.org has been around longer than me, anon archive thing is relativley new. I'm kinda not suprised that the archives.thebbs.org has fallen by the wayside as many sites do as people lose interest / gain interest.

There is a couple of site rips on the internet archive though, so at least if it does disappear it won't be gone for good.
