I'm setting up ENiGMA presently, and I'd like to gate a QWK network as well as my USENET feed over to it from my synchronet BBS. What's some of the basic concepts/places to look to get started on this?

    Howdy,

I'm setting up ENiGMA presently, and I'd like to gate a QWK network as well as my USENET feed over to it from my synchronet BBS.
What's some of the basic concepts/places to look to get started on this?

    Its pretty easy to do.

    You'll:

    * give synchronet a FTN address
    * configure the subs to use that address, and turn on the gating option
    * give your other BBS a FTN address
    * setup binkit/binkd so that the 2 BBS talk to each other (using echocfg)
    * setup areas.bbs so that mail is exported imported

Followed through your steps, and just need to wait for actual mail to start coming in. Maybe once it's setup and my bbs goes public I'll offer to gate DOVE-Net via FTN (assuming DOVE-Net is okay with it) to other FTN systems.

Not sure if it is permitted, or permission needs to be asked, but I have that available as well already ;)

From the "What is Dove-NET document:"

    Gateways
    --------
You *must not* gate DOVE-Net conferences to any other network without
    explicit, prior permission.

The following DOVE-Net conferences are already gated to other networks:

Synchronet Discussion <=> alt.bbs.synchronet USENET newsgroup
Synchronet Discussion <=> SYNCHRONET echo on the FidoNet Zone 1 Backbone Synchronet Sysops Only <=> SYNC_SYSOPS echo on the FidoNet Zone 1 Backbone Synchronet Programming <=> SYNC_PROGRAMMING echo on the FidoNet Zone 1 Backbone Synchronet Data <=> SYNCDATA echo on the FidoNet Zone 1 Backbone

From the "What is Dove-NET document:"

So this was recently discussed on Dove-NET and Rob is OK with folks gating it on the premise that the gating doesnt impact the network or the ability to identify where a problem exists (if one does). (If I'm paraphrasing correctly.)

Which if you think about it, using FTN is really no different to a user on a BBS, or using QWK with a BBS - it really is just another medium to get/receive messages. (And these days, we want to encourage folks to this hobby, not turn them away from it.)

There are a couple "Point clients" which use FTN, so folks could use that software with Dove as well (via a particpating BBS if not via Vert directly).

Not even nntp? or do I have to ask Digital Man before doing so?

I'm going to assume it means sending it to another network, not delivering it in another format. If I started gating DOVE-Net to fsxNet that'd be a big no-no, but just offering it to another BBS in FTN format in case they don't carry QWK or my users as NNTP isn't.

Which reminds me: Anybody know what zone number should be used for DOVE-Net (or anything else for that matter) when you're gating? I'm using 55 or 56, but I'm sure that's not right.

Not sure it matters. I get it from another BBS and we use 723 as the zone.
Since it's a private "network" between us... it's worked for the last umpteen
years I've been in dovenet. ;)

I don't know if this will help at all, but NuSkooler created a document and I have sort of been keeping it as up to date as possible with others help, it has a list of FTN networks, zone numbers, contact details, infopack links etc etc.. https://bitly.com/33593XG

Might be useful, if not for this in general for others.
