does anyone use a shell account or internet based gizmo dealio to host their BBS rather than their own home/office computer?

    Not yet.
I have my own BBS server hosted on an Internet-based provider with the
Mystic BBS running my doors, games, and all that.
I do use the opposite way though:
access the web-based server and when you click the ALL FILES, it routes to my local Mystic /bbs/allfiles.txt which is generated every week.
I haven't had time to play around back-and-forth yet for other items.
I wanted to see if I could get Mystic loaded on my web-based server as it is linux driven, but I like having it local (on a Win 7 -32 virtual desktop) so I can play the games myself :)

A number are using virtual private servers quite successfully - no issues there, but I'm not aware of anyone using a shell account. The main issue I see with that is you won't be able to use the standard ports, because normal shell accounts are non root users. You could use cron to automatically start the BBS and ensure it keeps running, and have all of your services on "high" ports.

I just use AWS. It's been working for me. It's a little expensive though, since it costs me about $15/mo. I've heard of some cheaper ones, but I've never gotten around to exploring them.
