• Inter-BBS Update 11 2-17

From NIA01@21:2/108 to All on Sat Feb 17 18:52:31 2018
Made some cosmetic changes. Online users are not displayed to the right of
the screen. Every users has there own color. So now every line will have the user handle: message and one of 6 colors.

The slow keyboard issues has been resolved. It has been hard to troubleshoot
as I can not reproduce on my end. But it you have trouble, let me know and
you can type /off to turn off the remote cursor query routine.

    Feedback is always welcome.

Nice work Ray! Keep the updates coming!

    Suggestions:

    For action words:
How about being able to just type
    grin NIA01

Instead of preceeding every actin command with a @ command.

Also what about rooms? Do you have those in your future plans?

    Once again nice work!

Ah, so it's the remote cursor query that causes the lag and subsequently missing characters when typing. I just went back to our board to double
check and sure enough /off resolves the issue. It might be a little slow to hit the screen, but it doesn't completely miss characters that were typed.

What's the purpose for the remote cursor query? Was that trying to resolve
the previous issue of it writing over top of the > marker?

All in all, it's coming along quite nicely. It could still use a Clear
screen on entry as it just smashes the display over top of the menu it was called from.

I took the action words out for now. Commands a changed to the / instead of
    @. Seemed more intuitive.

Also what about rooms? Do you have those in your future plans?
    Once again nice work!

I think so, we will see how popular the chat server becomes.
Thanks for the words of encouragement.

Yes, I need to know where the users cursor is so I can return it to its position after the screen is updated with a message.

I have the call to clear the screen both in ansi and asci, but on your connection from your bbs it does not work. I am interested in login into your bbs so I can test for myself. What is your telnet address?

    just thoughts

I dont like the colour to follow all the txt , I would rather just have the user name in the colour . and the rest of the txt in black and white.

but thats me I think it looks cleaner that way ,

I dont see it messing with my screen here , but if I do work with the sysop commands it does mess with them for some reason , if I lo out and log back in the screens are normal again ...

Thanks for all yor work !!!

Yes, I need to know where the users cursor is so I can return it to
its position after the screen is updated with a message.

Would it be possible to use the ansi code to save and restore cursor
position? for example, a message comes in, send the code \033[s then
display the message and restore with \033[u ?

I believe I gave that to you on the facebook group, but just to cover all bases, it's thenewfrontier2.hopto.org Port 23.

Oh, I just realized you don't have access to where I have it setup at. It's
in "Engineering" which is where we're putting anything that we want to test before making it available for users.

I'll create a new Security level for visiting sysops that will have access to that command. Just let me know what the name is in case it isn't obvious.

I did some double checking and found that this issue is only happening with RIPTel. It does not happen with NetRunner. I'll try a couple other terminal programs to be sure Riptel is the only one.

Although, it begs the question. Why does it clear with door games, but not InterBBS Chat? If RipTel is the only program doing it, it's probably not as big of an issue as it seemed at first. Most people don't use it. I like it because it actually goes full screen. Well, so does SyncTerm, but that looked funky full screen. Not sure the difference, but I already have SyncTerm and PuTTY installed on my system, so I can check out those as well and let you
    know how it goes.

Confirmed with 4 different Telnet applications. The problem resides only in RipTel. It's far more tolerable than originally thought. Especially if
RipTel users are the only ones seeing it. Most people use other applications.

Is that the riptel from the '90's you speak of or is it newer?

I thought that there was a newer version for windows available from pcmicro.com/something I forget exactly now.

I use those codes to remember the last position of the last message on the screen. I got rid of the cursor query routine. I just track the cursor now
    from counting keystrokes.

    V. 3.1 it says. From 1997 by Telegrafix. If there's a newer one at PC

    OK, Thanks

Your welcome.. :) I created a Visiting Sysops acct on The New Frontier ][. After I know which acct is yours I'll upgrade to Visiting Sysops and you can have access to Engineering that has the command for accessing InterBBS Chat. We just don't want it available for users quite yet. It's getting close though. We'll have to figure out a place to put it off the main.
