Question regarding FTN Point addresses. Is a "Point" in "modern" terms essentially a user ID on a particular BBS?

A point is a system that handles mail through a boss node.

For instance: I am writing this message through a small Mystic build running into my Macbook. I call it Chiron BBS, but it is not open to anyone
but me (I run it locally), and I exchange mail with the boss node, which is Saturn's Orbit BBS. Therefore, as Saturn's Orbit is 21:1/146, Chiron is
    running under 21:1/146.1.

If someone would like to send me a netmail, it should go to fsxNET HUB (21:1/100), then it would go to Saturn's Orbit (21:1/146) and then it should
go to Chiron. I have another system, Themis, that is setup into a Ubuntu VM that I use occasionally for fun, and it has the address 21:1/146.2.

Back in the dial-up days, there were people that would like to use only
the echomail part of the BBS, and they wanted to use their phone lines in an effective way, so they would set up points and get their feed from a friendly BBS.

Thanks everyone for your feedback on this, very helpful! I was under the assumption that a point automatically identified a end user, but it's
    much more opaque than that.

There used to be a different nodelist to handle points, called PointList.

People from Fido Region 2 (Europe) still handles it occasionaly. It's a small nodelist with the info related to how many points it does have, their operator and system names.

I started to read about it, but as Mystic doesn't handle pointlists (only nodelists), I never finshed it.

Feel free to netmail me if you want to test it.

Thanks for the lengthy explination. I think I have everything squared away at this point. I think the last part about people wanting direct NetMails is why I
was thinking they were related to a user ID previously.

I used to run a point, so I couls automatically collect mail from 2 or 3 BBSs and have it there ready to read. I initially used Bluewave to read it through my Bluewave offline door, but eventually switched to using GoldEd.

I used to do that at the beginning, but started to experience those QWK-related bugs with Mystic (same message id that got fixed at A35), so I
    had to be creative.

I had Synchronet, but since A35's bugfix has really made a difference to Mystic's QWK support, which has been rock solid since.

Indeed. Now I am having issues with a few JAM areas and lastread
pointers.. I think I will just reset everything and try it again.

I had that issues with pre-A35 versions, but recent Mystic releases have been no issue for me with lastread pointers.

For some weird reason, my two biggest message areas (from Fidonet BR) are not storing the lastread pointers. I think I'll run some message base maintenance tools and see what happens.

Sounds a little different to my issue. I found I was not getting all of the messages I should have been, and had to manually set the lastread pointers
    ack.

Yes, it is... Somehow I believe that in my cases both JAM areas got corrupted, I'll try to run some maintenance into it and see what happens.
