From paulie420@1:103/705 to All on Mon Dec 11 22:53:00 2023
I just made a video about BBSes for YT - it sucks, but at least I tried...

Question about SyncTERM, and the ST website - is there any interest in updating its style/website? Its... really retro - and fine for US, but is really a blockade for new users, or younger users... I want to bring m0re folks to BBSing and am willing to help - if allowed. Would DM, or the SyncTERM masters, be open to updating the SyncTERM website for 2o24?

I think it would go a long way to help foster new users to our wonderful community. I am NOT a web dev, but I'm willing to help with time, effort and monetarily to update the SyncTERM web presence. We're a group of tech people - we all know that... but I think ST is worthy of the masses. Does anyone else, hopefully DM/Nightfox (I'm forgetting the dev of syncterm, aren't I... lol) and the rest of the Dovenet r0ckstars, feel the same???

I know theres many here much m0re capable of an update than me - but I'd be willing to help as much as I can... can we?

I can't say I really feel as strongly about it. I'm actually not sure there's anything really wrong with the SyncTerm web site.. One thing I actually like about that style of web page is that it's simple and loads fast, without a lot of added fluff (i.e., no ads!). I think that kind of web page helps you find what you're looking for more easily. What in particular would you change about it?

A word of caution on websites... I don't mind them being "modern," but a
lot of websites do things that break the browsers that a lot of us
"techies" and BBS folks would be more likely to use, ex. links2 and other
    like browsers.

I can remember back when they used to teach us that a website should always have a text only version that would load for disability readers... most
web developers don't do even that any more.

Deuce is the master of the syncterm website, so you'd need to bring it up with him. He doesn't frequent DOVE-Net, but you can find him on irc.synchro.net (in #synchronet and other channels) and the syncterm support on sourceforge.net.

*I* agree with you - its easy enough to tell non-BBS users to just click the flag and get on with standard installs, but for non-BBS users it can be a lot.

I'd love if it had all thats there now, but maybe on thru a gitlab page, or other page of the site - with the landing page that looks updated and a nice 'Download' button at top that brings non-BBS users to current MacOS/Windows/Linux executables. (If available)

I feel like comparing a mobile app to a desktop app this way is like comparing apples & oranges.. Naturally there will be some differences. But I think the SyncTerm web site is fairly easy too. There are download links for SyncTerm for Windows and MacOS toward the bottom of the page, just like there are links to MuffinTerm in the app store at the bottom of that page. It's not really clear to me what the difference is that you're pointing out.

I think it would go a long way to help foster new users to our wonderful community.

The site is hideous, but I think Deuce likes it that way.

The gigantic waving flag was an "enhancement" following frequent complaints that people couldn't find the download link. They still have trouble locating it. I don't even recognize it as a download link until I stop being distracted by the minty horror of the page and focus on reading.

I don't think we're going to get a lot of newcomers and young people coming along, but in general it's good for a website to sort of meet expectations / conventions so that the average visitor will grasp how to navigate it. So, to that end, maybe I'll throw together an updated version of the site and offer it to him.

    That was my impression also.

you both are understanding me wrong.

    We dont have users.

And the people that are too dumb to download syncterm when dude has tons of links on the site wouldn't be good users that would stick around.

But I think the SyncTerm web site is fairly easy too. There are download links for SyncTerm for Windows and MacOS toward the bottom of the page

KK - no worries... I only was thinking of more non-BBS folks, but agree - I can fully navigate the ST site. :P

non-bbs people don't want to call bbses. they'd rather have facebook, instagram, snapchat and other social media.

if you want a non-bbs person to visit your bbs, have them use htmlterm on the specific bbs.

I had another look, and on 2nd thought, I think the page probably could be improved. Above the download links at the bottom, it says "the below links are almost certainly not what you want". The 'actual' download link is more toward the middle (under the flag), and there's also another link that says "or here". The page probably could be simplified a bit. And the color scheme could be better, I think.

maybe the page should automatically start the download for you when you visit. it.

I know enough about you. Although I had a long break from running a system, I'll wager I was running a system before you were, for several years. The Fidonet nodelist archives will prove that if you care to look.

LOL! You just proved my point, right there. Here, I'll try to explain it so you can understand. I'm typing very slowly here... Your attempt at a metaphor was not too bad, actually, and I take it to mean that although the number of callers/users has decreased dramatically (the dew drops vs rain), they are still callers. Today. Not 25 years ago. Thanks! Game, set, match.

My favorite thing is when people return to BBSing, while they often express surprise it still exists, they are so glad it does.

when they come back they check it out but those people go away and don't come back. i tried to bring back people from the huge bbses and they
have moved on. people prefer social media.

I agree -- the syncterm site could use a little modernization, and
it's a geat program. I'll also point more tech-savvy folks to IcyTerm, MagiTerm and Netrunner (I know you do, too)!

i either use mtelnet or syncterm. i've used netrunner and magiterm but they have a few things that rub me the wrong way.

you should just tell them to use htmlterm because then they dont need to dick around with a client.

You forgot to tell them how much of a loser newbie they are - cmon, MRO, get on top of yer game.

Why are you hiding yours? Because it's completely stock and boring? <CHORTLE>

    i'm not hiding anything.
don't know what you are talking about.

    You playing dumb is..... comical.

what the fuck are you talking about?
    both my bbses are public.

    are you talking about bbses.info?
bbses.info was just a back end for the services i ran.
it had the files from bbstorrents and ads for the bbses from bbsbanner

    you really dont know shit.

As I said previously (and you snipped), your "BBS" is not publicly accessible. That's what you're hiding, doofus.

    i have 2 public bbses. if you're talking about bbses.info there's not
much there. it's defunct aside from me using it for msg nets.

And I just disagree - some of us, who have been pushing and marketing our bbSes - like we did in the 90s - do have unique users. I reply to dozens a week welcoming them and explaining bbSes to them - and a few stick around!

But again - I'm sure you don't have users.

I actually have a few. The majority are older than I am, though.

yeah i have a few too. i dont really consider that normal capacity.
a few years back we got hit with a big slump and it hasn't bounced back.

Yeah, far far from capacity. I seemed to get a little bump during COVID,
but that has not held up.

there's a lot of people in denial about that or just don't have a good enough rspective because they haven't been around a long time.

There are a few boards that do get a lot of traffic, although not full
capacity and maybe mostly other sysops. Maybe they are more l33t than most
of us. :D More power to them, though. Whatever is working for them, I wouldn't discourage.

I've tried many times to get an account on PTT2/3, but they require you to be a citizen and use 2factor auth - even with a translation software, I couldn't get in...

They used to have 300,000 ACTIVE users and have remained online this entire time with what I think we'd consider heavy usage even through today.

I wish I could get in... there was a great article a decade ago that displayed many of their art over the years - a PETSCII/ANSi style that was really impressive.

Felt like a corporate BBS, even bigger, with mods and co-sysops helping with the community.

Yeah, in the past few years there was discussion of one in Taiwan that is
very active, and about the software that powers it. I was curious so I
tried to check it out but it is very much all in Chinese. ;)

Back in the day, a network I was on (GT Power) had several nodes in Taiwan,
but they also mostly participated amongst themselves. The only time you
really realized they were around was when some of the users would post in
the equivalent of the FIDO Asia Link echo.

I used to just poke around on one of the popular ones but dude put in a kind of capcha thing. I think you have to visit a website and enter the code. i can't remember, it was a few years ago. Also i could barely make out what they were saying. I can make out some norwegian and german but taiwanese is beyond my abilities.

Similar time-frames, my friend! I consider my "active" years to be 1992-1996. Retruned around 2018. It's a different time now, but still a blast.

Those were good times for BBSing. I called BBSes starting in 1987,
started my own in 1991, and during that period remember the BBS being
busy almost full-time until I got a BlueWave offline message reader door
in 1993 or so. Windows 95 came out and we were all in denial, but could
see the number of callers drop.

I went mail-only in 2001 and at that point my BBS had something like
    74,000 calls in 10 years.
