I think it is a good idea to re-state my original problem.
I could not proceed in my installation of openxp until I did
something to get past the archivers.
Using any of them to proceed did not work.
Someone suggested how I could get around compression and that did
work.
But my Boss Node uses compression and I have bothered him enough with asking for previous install advice.
Fair enough but can I assume that you are having problems with de- compression?
Regards, Martin

Yes, very much so.

I was getting that from the nodelist viewer too, but the name it was showing was Jon Justvig, Fidonews Editor. Totally strange.
MEANWHILE, I think I solved the Winpoint Optimization problem. It is related to the nodelist.
Apparently, Winpoint gets confused if it finds rogue NODELIST.###
files in the NodelistDL directory.
When I cleared out the old ones, including the diffs, and freshened
it up with a recent nodelist, the NL viewer (F9) showed the correct entries.
Did you mean the DistribNL directory :)

'scuse me but there shouldn't be any "rogue" nodelist/nodediff files in there anyway.
When I drop in the archived nodelists into the DistribNL, WinPoint
magically unpacks them.
I've never seen that happen here ?
HUH? Of course you have.
It's even documented, by you. ;)
While WinPoint is loaded and running, and I drag and drop a noldelist archive from the inbound directory to the DistribNL direcory, the NODELIST.Z## file is automatically replaced by its unpacked equivalent (and the original archive is gone).
WinPoint may be the better GUI-based point program compared to Apoint,
Yes, it's a much more aesthetically pleasing GUI but it's such a great
shame that all the bugs and issues will never be fixed. Perhaps someone
should waft $$$$$$'s under Tim's nose ;)
I don't know who might have these wafts of $$$$$$'s that you mention, especially at this covid/lockdown/stay-home time.

..... I've just tried that and absolutely nothing happened.

Perhaps there's a "money bags" lurking in a dark corner LOL!

Winpoint needs to be running for that to work. You're messin' with my mind. :/ Make sure you have Winpoint running, drop a nodelist.z## in the \DistribNL folder and watch Winpoint change it from nodelist.z## to nodelist.###

It was a brief confirmation in echomail. Despite my archive of msgs in POINTS, I can't seem to spot the specific exchange we had about it.

I'm still watching and nothing's happened yet :)

I've found one that's relevant to this thread but I don't know if it's
the same one you had in mind. Try doing a MsgID search for 4c120309
with OpenXP...
If you can't find that message, let me know and I'll repost it.

Short of capturing on vidoe what I see, I don't know how to convince you that it *is* happening here.
Maybe your WinPoint is not activate to auto-unpack or something like
that?
In Extras/Options/Automation, I have:

I found it, but not in my local OpenXP. For me, that Winpoint discussion predated my introduction to OXP, so I looked in my Winpoint. Thankfully, Winpoint automatically includes the msgid in its "text" searches!
In 4c1201309 the last sentence you wrote: "WinPoint's nodelist processor cannot process packed nodelist/pointlist files, although it can process packed nodediff/pointdiff files."
I hear ya. But I swear to you, simply dropping the packed nodelist automatically unpacks here! I still have to Shift+Ctl+L or "Fidonet/ProcessNodelist" manually for the new nodelist to update, however.

Yep, same here.
Hmmm, well, there's obviously a difference somewhere between our
setups but what it is eludes me right now. Perhaps one day, one
of us will find it.

The change from nodelist.Z## to nodelist.### happens really fast and without any other visual clues that "processing" is going on.
I'll try to get this on video for you.
In the meantime, here's my Fido nodelist config .....
Extras -> Options -> Nodelists
Name: Fidonet
Nodelist: NODELIST
Nodediff: NODEDIFF
Archive: NODEDIFF.Z??
Note: NODELIST, NODEDIFF and NODEDIFF.Z?? all point to WinPoint's DistribNL directory.
How does all that compare with your config?
