(1931), Manchuria (1937), SE Asia, etc which we were trying to contain while remaining neutral.
If Japan hadn't attacked Pearl Harbour it might of been another year or
two before we finally did enter the war, on England's side, if it hadn't
been conquered by the Axis first.

It is a shame that people do not learn much about history any more... or
maybe it is what they are "learning" about it that is the shame. I have
heard it said that WWII didn't really start with the German invasion of
Poland in 1939, but instead with the Japanese attack on Shanghai in August, 1937, at the start of the second China-Japan war.

Agreed. From everything I have learned about it, Japan did not think they could win a war with the US. They hoped that, by hitting Pearl Harbour
fast and hard, they could convince us to stay out of it. Boy did they mess
up.

That's either a skewed view of what was written or a poor
interpretation of the events.

Yes, FDR provoked Japan through sanctions and other economic means.

Yes, Japan thought that they needed to act decisively to control raw
materiel in the Pacific.

Yes, they probably thought that the USA would back off, hoping that
isolationist tendancies would prevail. But, I'm sure that FDR knew
that Great Britain would fall, even with lend-lease. The only way to
jar the USA into action would be an attack on the country. Japan
arguably played right into that.

I've always wondered about some of those coincidences that lend
weight to conspiracy theories - like the fact that the carriers left
Pearl Harbor a day or two before the attack. Did FDR and the Navy
sacrifice the battleships at Pearl, knowing that battleships were the
instruments that won the last war, and that the next war would be won by
carriers?

Not to mention the fact that WWII started in 1939. Americans tend to
have a US-centric view of the war.

Makes for interesting alternative fiction, where a more isolationist
president delays entry into the war and the US moves to a stalemate

When I was very young I remember someone saying that before Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, Japan has asked that other Nations send Metal to them, and the United States had people save their Tin Cans to help the people of Japan.

And that Those Tin Cans were used by Japan to make Bombs.

George H.W. Bush was the last American President to have served, period,
and he did indeed serve in WWII. If memory serves, his WWII story is

He flew in torpedo bombers in the PTO, didn't he? (looks up on
wikipedia) Yep, flew Avengers off of the USS San Jacinto, and surely

period, and he did indeed serve in WWII. If memory serves, his WWII
story is pretty interesting.
