    For many people, making bread, even in the convenience of their own
    kitchen, seems like an involved project that requires an entire
    afternoon. Actually, it is a simple and meditative process with
    delicious results that have no comparison. If you think you enjoy the
    aroma of baking bread in a warm home, wait until its fumes reach your
    nose in camp when you're really hungry! While many campers are
    addicted to baking, I choose to bake only when I want to really treat
    myself. You need no extra equipment to bake and can either use the
    fire pit or the double boiler method for baking.

    Fire Pit Baking Method:

    Make a bed of coals from a burned down fire.

    Place a few small rocks on the coals so the pot may rest above the
    heat slightly.

    Cover pot (with dough inside) and place hot coals or start a small
    twiggy fire on the lid.

    As the coals cool, replenish them with hot ones. If the coals are
    very hot, cooking time should be the same as a regular oven.

    A coffee can covered with tin foil may also be used as a stove.

    Double Boiler Baking Method:

    This method is best for sweet breads.

    Add about 1/2 to 2/3 c water to your largest pot. Place small stones
    in the bottom of the pot.

    Put the dough into a smaller pot and snuggle it inside the larger pot,
    sitting on top of small stones in the bottom. Make sure the water
    level is below the lid of the smaller pot.

    Put lids on both pots and place them on the stove.

    As the water boils, the steam will cook the cake. Replace the water
    as it boils down.

    Note: This double boiler method only heats to approximately 200 to
    250°F, and therefore takes longer to bake breads and cakes.
