Title: Cabbage, Miso, And Salmon Soup
    Categories: Soups
    Yield: 1 Gallon

2 qt Water; up to 3 qt
    1/2 Green cabbage; chopped 1"
    2 Sweet onions; diced
    15 oz Canned salmon
    8 Thyme sprigs
    4 oz Red miso
    2 tb Vietnamese mushroom powder
    1/4 c Oil; +1/4 c; divided

Heat water and put in crockpot. Dissolve miso paste and Vietnamese
mushroom powder into hot water. Turn crockpot onto HIGH to start
    warming it up.

Core and half cabbage. Refrigerate unused half of cabbage. Chop other
half into 1" squares. Sauté with 1/4 c oil in frying pan on
medium-high heat until about 1/4 of the cabbage is browned. Add into
    crockpot.

Peel and dice onions. Sauté with 1/4 c oil in a frying pan until
translucent and beginning to brown. Add into crockpot.

Pinch top of thyme sprig between thumb and forefinger. Pull backwards
through pressed fingers to strip the leaves and tender tips off the
tough stems. Repeat with remaining thyme sprigs. Compost stems. Mince
thyme leaves and tips. Add into crockpot.

Open canned salmon. Drain liquid into crockpot. Coarsely mash salmon
into smaller chunks and add into crockpot.

Turn crockpot onto LOW and simmer for a couple of hours, or as
    desired, to blend flavors together.

OUCH! Miso is 300mg sodium per tsp. 5.75 tsps mak 1 ounce for 1,725 mg per ounce and they want 4oz!!!! That's 6,900mg sodium! I don't think I've ever seen a recipe that high in salt/sodium before!

Just so you know the recommened sodium is 1,800 a day (some say up to 2,000).

    That's 6,900mg sodium!

Just so you know the recommended sodium is 1,800 a day...

Maybe i overdid it with the miso...

The yield is one gallon, which is 16 standard servings of soup.

    6,900 mg / 16 = 431.25 mg Sodium per serving

I would normally eat 2 servings of soup in one sitting, so i would be
eating 862.5 mg Sodium, or roughly 50% of my recommended daily intake.
This is on par with or less than a brand-name can of soup.

Blood pressure is regulated via Sodium/Potassium balance. Dark green
veggies are high in Potassium. My current theory is that increased
consumption of veggies is the reason why there are so many people in
good health in parts of the world that have high-sodium cuisines.

    What do you think?

It is such as any reasonable method to heat water.

    Medium and half?

I don't understand your question. Would you care to rephrase it?

    How many is LOW, Ben?

    I suppose that depends.

Which programming languages are you written in?

I do not understand your phrase. Would you care to rephrase it, Ben?

You asked "How many is LOW, Ben?"

LOW is the lowest setting on a crockpot. To answer how many, i would need
a unit of measure, which is generally not present on a crockpot. LOW is a temperature indicator, so it would make sense to use a temperature unit of measure. The average temperature of a crockpot LOW setting is 200 degrees Fahrenheit, which is 93-1/3 degrees Celsius. That's the best answer I can think of for how many "is LOW," Denis.

Have you googled a crockpot yet? Try also slow cooker.

A microwave only cooks fast. It is not capable of 'low and slow'. Having a low wattage setting on a microwave is not even remotely going to get the same results.

Doesn't matter Denis. Wrong device and nothing will make it operate the same.

Is there a reason you don't have at least a hotplate? (thats a single burner you use a pot or a frying pan on. Very few of the recipes posted here will work with a microwave. Electrical, it plugs in.

Thanks Carol! I was curious about it after Ben mentioned it.

Interesting but I am apt to keep making my own more complex version that would be called a salmon soup+ if it had miso and cabbage in it. For non-title pedantic folks
(grin), it is japanese salmon soup, xxcarol!

Lots of vanlifers are bringing portable butane camp stoves into vogue
again. I'm not sure about the safety level of using one indoors, but
they're inexpensive and don't require much in the way of anything.

Electric ones look pretty simple, look like they'd draw around 10 amps,
a lightly-loaded shared circuit should suffice.

Butane is generally safe indoors but just in case, crack a window a little. Look for ones rated for indoor use. Propane aka 'liquid gas aka natural gas.

I always thought it would be fun to go camping with a small RV. One of those where the drivers cabin is open to the rest of it and living space about 8x12. Super mini-shower, catlitter toilet (grin).

I saw a home-built one once. Mostly empty cat litter bucket under a wide board with a hole in the center and a toilet seat bolted over it. It fit in the tiny shower when not in use. More cat litter bucket in a simple kitchen bench where the lid lifted and had storage. Propane for cooking. Solar on roof carging a jackery type battery (built in inverter). It was really neat!
