06 September 1552 - NAO VICTORIA SAILS INTO SEVILLE AFTER A HISTORIC
JOURNEY: After three years, 42,000 miles, and the first circumnavigation
of the world, the Nao Victoria sails back into her Spanish home port. Of
the original five ships and more than 200 sailors that started
Magellan's expedition, only the Victoria and 18 men have returned from
the globe-spanning voyage.
The Magellan expedition, also called Magellan-Elcano expedition, was the
first voyage around the world. It was a 16th-century Spanish expedition
planned and led by Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan to the
Moluccas, which departed from Spain in 1519, and completed in 1522 by
Spanish navigator Juan Sebastian Elcano after Magellan's death, crossing
the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian oceans, culminating in the first circumnavigation of the world.
The expedition accomplished its primary goal - to find a western route
to the Moluccas (Spice Islands). The fleet left Spain on 20 September
1519, sailed across the Atlantic ocean and down the eastern coast of
South America, eventually discovering the Strait of Magellan, allowing
them to pass through to the Pacific Ocean (which Magellan named). The
fleet completed the first Pacific crossing, stopping in the Philippines,
and eventually reached the Moluccas after two years. A much-depleted
crew led by Elcano finally returned to Spain on 6 September 1522, having
sailed west across the great Indian Ocean, then around the Cape of Good
Hope through waters controlled by the Portuguese and north along the
West African coast to eventually arrive in Spain.

Title: "All-Around-The-World" Custard Pancakes
Categories: Breads
Yield: 4 Servings
3 lg Eggs; yolks/whites separated
1/8 ts Salt
1/4 c Sugar
1 c Milk
3/4 c A-P flour
3 tb Butter; melted
1/2 ts Vanilla extract
MMMMM--------------------------TO SERVE-------------------------------
Jam; opt
Powdered sugar: opt
Butter; opt
Separate the yolks and the whites into two medium bowls,
being careful not to drop any yolk into the egg whites.
Whisk together egg yolks, salt, and sugar until lightly
thickened - about 45 seconds.
Add half the milk and flour and stir until batter is
smooth. Repeat with the remaining flour and milk, this
time also adding the butter and vanilla. Stir just until
it is mixed through.
Using a handheld mixer, beat egg whites until they
quadruple in size and form soft peaks. For me, this took
about four minutes.
Using a rubber spatula, very gently fold egg whites into
batter. You want to be gentle and avoid stirring or
mixing too much. Fold until just incorporated, the
batter will still be lumpy.
Set a nonstick pan over low to medium-low heat. Heat pan
for 2-3 minutes until a drop of water skids across the
pan before evaporating. Do NOT add any butter or oil to
pan - it's not needed and might overcook the pancakes.
Using a tablespoon, drop heaping spoons of batter into
the pan. Cook until the pancakes rise, and then flip
over using a rubber spatula and continue cooking.
Depending on your stove, you may need to adjust the
heat. You want them to cook low and slow, so the custard
in the middle sets, without the bottoms of the pancake
getting too dark.
