    Yield: 8 Servings

    MMMMM---------------------------SALAD--------------------------------
    1 lg Head broccoli
    1/2 c Sweet onion; chopped
    10 sl Bacon

    MMMMM--------------------------DRESSING-------------------------------
    3 tb Vinegar
    1/3 c Mayonnaise
    1/3 c Sugar

Cook bacon in skillet. When crisp, remove from pan and drain on paper
    towels. Set aside.

Wash broccoli, cut off stems and reserve for use with another recipe.
Cut broccoli tops into bite-size pieces and place in a large serving
bowl. Chop and measure onion, add to the broccoli in the bowl.
Crumble the bacon over the bowl and then mix with the vegetables; set
    aside.

In a small mixing bowl, combine dressing ingredients. Just before
serving, pour dressing over broccoli mixture; toss to coat.

    3 tb Vinegar
    1/3 c Mayonnaise
    1/3 c Sugar

Finly dice about 1/3 cup of onion (red or white) and add it, as well as
about 1/4 c sunflower seeds and about 1/3-1/2 cup of raisins.

I "have" to make this for our church pot lucks and rarely bring any
home. I usually do a triple recipe but one time when I couldn't do it,
Steve made it for me and only doubled it. He was near the end of the pot
luck line and only got a few sunflower seeds, bits of onion and raisins.

I made it for a church mission trip up to VT (before doing it for the
church as a whole). Got some groans but basically, ended up with an
almost empty bowl so now it's a mission trip standard. Our preaching
pastor at the time was one who didn't care for broccoli but the next
morning he told me that he'd called his wife the night before and told
her "you've GOT! to get that recipe". He's moved on to another church so
will not have any at this year's trip. (G)

    Hi Ruth!

Thanks for sharing this tip. That sounds a lot like how my grandmother
made broccoli salad. I always ate a lot of that. I think she may have
used golden raisins. I ate some grocery store broccoli salad that
clearly used lemon juice and i thought that worked well too.

Glaad you liked it. The recipe came from a cook book our church in HI
put together for its 30th anniversary. Every time I make the salad I
think of the folks there and the good times we had. Its 50th anniversary
and ours are in the same year so we're thinking of going over there to
help them celebrate and maybe catching an inter island cruise.

I've used both, depending on where I make it and what I grab. They're
both good but I think the golden ones are a bit plumper to begin with.

    salad that
clearly used lemon juice and i thought that worked well too.

I've had some at one of our local restaurants that had canned peas in it
as well as the broccoli. It didn't have most of the other--raisins,
onion, sunflower seeds, etc--just didn't taste right. I've also seen
some recipies for it that call for grated cheese or other ingredients
but my all time favorite is the version I got from the church cook book.
