The beauty of Telegram (+ @Fido2telebot) is that it opens
access to some Fidonet echos for ALL smartphone users,
initially.
Then, if there is an alternative laptop/desktop option, maybe
that person could be persuaded to enter the Fidonet world for a
totally immersive experience?
Android users could be persuaded to try Aftershock or HotdogEd.
It's really up to users/moderators of this world to educate.
But Telegram (+ @Fido2telebot) is the only option for iPhone
users.
Getting started with Telegram is just TWO steps:
[1] Install Telegram
[2] Send %HELP and %LIST to the @Fido2telebot to get started!
Do Aftershock/HotdogEd make it easier than that? :D

ALthough FidoNet is not as popular as in the 20s anymore
and I really do understand that people who actually still
use it would love to see more users come back or even
experience FidoNet the first time, I don't think that
telegram is the best way.
It IS modern and well adopted, but personally, I don't
trust telegram. Also, this platform has quite a tendency
to attract people with kind of a weird view on the world.
Lately, I thought that reviving FidoNet especially in the
eastern reagion of Zone 2 would allow people from
respective countries to communicate with the "outside"
world bypassing their governments' control over the
internet.
Solutions such as Telegram would not fit into that idea
though. :)
The screen is not ideal for incoming originally wide
lines (the body of the text tends to honour the presence
of hard CRs., and the since the screen is a perfect 2"x2"
square, there is no landscape-view option.
None of that should matter. What does matter is the word
wrapping upon display. I note that in the case of the
original it appears to hardwrap at 72 characters which I
believe goes back to the teletype days ... either that or
line printers, although I doubt that since there were many
printers back then that could do much more than 80
characters nevermind 72.
However, I understand that smartphones with 16:9 screens
can be tilted horizontally to get a better representation
of some messages that arrive in the original 70-80char
per line form.
With the default font, an android based tablet can handle
80 character width on both portrait and landscape modes
(16:9). I imagine the same can be said for smartphones
and other handheld devices.
And.. I also use the desktop version which I find is the
easiest way to produce a reply.
Proper word wrapping would be required to convince me. I
have a tablet that can produce proper MSGs that is
entirely capable of both displaying and creating MSGs that
does this the correct way without ANY changes to standards
... or worse; goofy kludges that create more problems and
solve absolutely nothing.
I have not found a font-type or fontsize control on my Blackberry.
The lettering is already pretty small as it is. :(
[...] Also I am guessing that @Fido2telebot has a
hardcoded wrap at 72 characters (1960's teletype
machines). Judging by what I see at this end your msg's
are fine but definetly look dated.
I'll look up all this stuff if anyone is interested but I
doubt I'll ever use it other than for testing. I don't
have much love for these so-called smart devices. To me
they look like perfect targets for ye olde sledge hammer.
:::evil grin:::
There should be a CR after char 63 above.
I do this because then my own messages look nicer (not
haphazardly wrapped) when I look at them with Telegram on my
Blackberry! ;)
I also find it easier to read line-lengths that closer
resemble the width of a printed page or newspaper column
than the totally free-flowed paragraphs that sometimes
arrive here.

Telegram (+ @Fido2telebot) may not be the best final solution..
but it's a useful option and a step forward to reach smartphone
users.
It IS modern and well adopted, but personally, I don't
trust telegram. Also, this platform has quite a tendency
to attract people with kind of a weird view on the world.
User's of Telegram don't get any of the "weird view" channels
unless they actually look for then and join them. There are no
ads promoting that stuff unlike the "Suggestions" system found
on Facebook for example. You can be certain that Facebook is
to be trusted much less than Telegram. ;)
The Fidonet groups are private. In otherwords, searching for
"asian_link" in the standard S)earch feature won't turn
anything up. Prospective participants need to use the
specially crafted invite-link that the @Fido2telebot provides
following the %LINK command.
This privacy also makes sure that no robots or spammers can
post anything.
The one for this echo is:
ASIAN_LINK (https://t.me/+TlC5K7EkqxOR8E4u) - ASIAN_LINK is a
friendly international Fidonet chat echo. All are welcome to
participate.
You can see the little intro-page on the web before you join!
Lately, I thought that reviving FidoNet especially in the
eastern reagion of Zone 2 would allow people from
respective countries to communicate with the "outside"
world bypassing their governments' control over the
internet.
Telegram on it's own can also be used to make live-voice
"calls" between contacts. It's rather quite efficient that
way.
Solutions such as Telegram would not fit into that idea
though. :)
I'll use it to primarily have it notify me when a post is made
in a favourite echo. Then, it's a quick way to just take a look
at the messages from the convenience of the phone that might be
my my beside.
If I want to engage in a reply, I simply use the desktop
version of the app on my computer - as I am doing now - 'cuz
typing all this is much easier with a full-size keyboard.
As people are introduced to the content on some basic Fidonet
echos, hopefully they can be steered toward other tools (nntp,
offline readers, bbsing, etc) to get a more emmersive
experience of echomail - if they want - just as you have done
with the newly revived and well-supported Winpoint!

I'll have to take your word on that. Last I heard from way-back-when it was teletype's fault. I refuse to vouch for the accuracy of way-back-when especially when it involves memory these days as the old grey brain just ain like she used to be.
