If you were to take the salient content of each page, you could probably r the relevant story very fast in one page-view.

I use Instapaper to save a lot of content to read later, but they also have a bookmarklet called "Instapaper Text" that strips out all the "extras" and
gives you a nice reading view stripped of ads and other distractions.

uBlock Origin ÅÅ. I've been using it
for a couple of years with Firefox and
Chrome (at work), and it and Ghostery
are probably the only thing keepin the
Web usable these days. Works pretty
    well on Android, too.

    I've often wondered how prevalent
people setting up PiHoles at home are.
I've yet to do it myself (too big a
    chance of accidentally interfering with
something and getting a wakeup at 03000
    ) but it's on my to-try list.

Setting up a pi-hole at home was simple. Enter the basic IP information in
the setup program and the installer does the rest. When finished, pick which additional block lists you wish to run.

sounds like you're not using a decent/proper ad filter... i rarely see any ads in my browsing... i'm using firefox with adblock and
noscript... when i was using facecrook, no ads... i use twitter all
the time, no ads... those click-bait articles you mention above, no ads... amazon, no ads... sure, it took me a little while to get
noscript set so that only the stuff needed for a site to work was
loaded but once that was done, no ads...

Right. I don't have any blockers installed, anymore. I just have "Disconnect for Facebook" which claims to disable 3rd party websites from accessing my Facebook.

I did use noscript for a little while. Instead of adblock, I used uBlock. Again.. newer versions just stopped working with my current XP + FF 52.8

I have something called FBC installed on my Win7 desktop and a newer FF.
FBC has a rather nice config system perfectly matched to control the many options in Facebook: Rooms, MyStory.. etc.

Since you mention noscript, I reinstalled it on the Win7 desktop today,
and got a bit overwhelmed on the per site settings required. I only disabled a couple of things and FB complained that "scripting was
required". So, I allowed scripting and disabled pretty much everything else, but then it failed to finish loading the next time.

My desktop Win7 pc has unlimited DSL, so data use for all the extra stuff
is not such a noticeable problem.

My XP machine still remains my go to system for most everything. I have a newish refurbished Thinkpad 540p Win7pro since Dec 2019 too, but I just can't wrap myself around to using it full time yet. The chicklet keyboard
is a bit of a detractor. I like using that laptop for watching films/ files, but not so much for regular use.

I might go back and take another look at noscript on the Win7 desktop pc, but I am basically fed up with FB anyway. And I should really just steer away from the clickbait "information/news" sites that have 2 sentences of "real" content per page and force you to numerous "NEXT" pages to read the next two sentences. Those are just a complete abomination.

Nice part about Pi-hole is your OS on your pc, phone, etc is untouched.

How could I take advantange of pi-hole on a network that only has Windows pcs?

Do I simply build a small linux pc running pi-hole and point my primary
and secondary DNS from each pc to the network IP address of the pc running pi-hole?

Even easier would be to update your router's settings. Then when each device gets an IP address it's DNS settings are also updated. This also allows it
    to work for phones/tablets, etc.

Yes. Some routers will also have an option to choose where DNS resolution goes. That makes it really nice, especially if you're a mobile user and want to leave settings at auto.

still get yelled at for listenin to a

that's what QoS (Quality of Service) is for... it helps to ensure that network packets with a higher priority are sent out the wire first... the trick is having a QoS that is configurable and adjusting it so that some stuff has higher priority than other stuff... but this also depends on the QoS implementation... the QoS my firewall uses is currently based on ports... it works well until things are tunneling over port 80 or 443 to try to force their way out... at that point, a web proxy with its priority buckets can possibly help... one would also need to MitM the stuff on 443, though, to be able to analyze and prioritize that traffic through the proxy...

If you run into problems, there's a support community on Reddit, plus their wiki page and several forums to check with. If something like gaming or conferencing is affected, the dns calls related to the game or confernce app can be whitelisted so they do pass through. Pi-hole also has a log viewer,
so you can see what is being blocked or passed through. Custom block lists
    can be added as well.

I do have QoS set up. I'm running cake as the queuing discipline, fq-codel
as the leaf discipline, 80% of the traffic available with the remaining 20%
for bursting. This is what happens when you have a sub-5000 rpm conventional hard drive running for ten years...
