That was pretty good. I wasn't aware that there once was a Google BBS
Tunnel thing around. I thought I was looking at a Lynx/Links type of
it was a joke.
I like the statement "In a world of internet snooping, a BBS is
probably one of the last bastions of digital privacy".
eh, i wouldnt say we have privacy on bbses. infact, this very
conversation is being cached many times over. depends on how many bbses
are on the web and allow viewing the msg subs without signing in.
the fbi shows up to any sysops house they are gonna give up any
information they ask for i would assume.

And why would any sysop be worried about the fbi these days? ;)

In the past, dialup bbses may have been targets of distributing warez or certain pr0n and gained a bad reputation because of a handful of systems. I remember reading about a few of those that were caught with violating copyright to playboy or something like that.
But today.. I would think that the fbi would have far greater fishes to fry than harrasing a bbs operation somewhere or perusing "public" ftn/qwk/ nntp messages.
It almost sounds like a sickness to be so obsessed with collecting every byte passing throught the internet.
if they are doing illegal activity. for example there is one sysop who posts here who is a pedophile.
Agreed, and it is sick that in the later 90s they rounded up those kids like that... late in the BBS scene, the fbi cracked down on a bunch of boards, li OG just stated..
They should have been making sure them boys (and girls) were getting their S turned in because they were fixing to have a long career.

It is a sickness. I knew a lot of guys that sucked BBS's dry of every bit and byte that had. They didn't use the software. They just stored it. Look at the Internet Archive. Where do you think all that stuff comes from? I would think it would be pretty cool for the FBI to show up at my place. I'd feel very important. ;-). I believe the FBI has better things to do other then chase BBS SysOps around. lol
Re: /Google BBS Tunnel
When I ran my original BBS in the 90s, occasionally I'd get a caller who would email me saying they heard it's a warez BBS and asking me how to get access to the warez section. I never ran a warez BBS, so I was confused and wondering where they had heard that. But later I thought perhaps they were from the police or FBI or something looking for warez BBSes to crack down on.

LOL, no..... that was like the first thing I asked every BBS before I got into the scene. Was just begging to find new wolenstein maps. :P
Those were just folks hoping to find some $$$ software man....

So did you assume all BBSes were warez BBSes and ask how to get warez access? :P

I used to have a "(e)lite" option on my files menu that didn't have a hotkey, then later bound it to "hangup".

I don't allow uploading. SysOps need to remember their are users out there that get thier kicks out of trying to crash a BBS, website or whatever. The more access you allow the higher the chances someone is going to "get
in". Back in the day SysOps would test one anothers BBS trying to crash it.
