With people trying to forget about covid and get back to normal i think the old habits are back.

today i was in training and a guy from another state was the presenter and he had a horrible cough. he didn't think he had to cover his mouth. he didn't think he had to wear a mask. so he coughed all day long on us sometimes pretending to cough on his elbow but really coughing into the air.

    that was fucking disgusting.

also the person i was stuck with last week was very sick and she told me i would get sick too. she had no mask. we were stuck driving together all day.
so i am sick as hell now with a sore throat.

people are disgusting. it didn't take long to revert back.

I agree. When we went into Covid lockdowns and picked up more sanity habits - like covering your mouth / masking, social distancing, and basic hygiene - it occurred to me just how disgustingly so many people live their lives.

Like, since when was it ever okay to blow out candles (spit and all) on a birthday cake that the entire family and friend group is going to eat?!

and if you are sick, you really shouldn't be at work if you are around people. it's not right coming in sick when your coworkers go home to children and the elderly.

You shouldn't be at work, but then again, it may be a major problem if you don't turn up, such as if you are the only one on your team who is not on leave and your job is the difference between whether the company releases something to market on time or not.

And if some people "soldier on", it sets a precedent for others. I worry that if I don't turn up because I'm sick, that somehow I'll be "flagged". I still stay home, but it plays on ones mind.

so if dipshit one comes to work sick, then all the other dipshits get sick and get sick enough to take off. then the boss dipshit gets sick.

it would have been better to lose 1 guy to a 3 day weekend than a whole team of people taking off over 2 weeks.

this is part of my theory of someone fucking it up for everyone. there are people who call in when they arent sick and then it creates an environment where you can't take off of work for the sake of yourself and others.

Thats the thing, if people have expressed a sentiment of "he's faking it" or "he's probably at the footy", then you want to be sure you're really sick before you take time off.

Sure, you can got the doctors note, but one doesn't go to the doctor everytime they catch a cold, do they? GP's have better things to do with their time.

Where I work now is good, but I've worked at other places where upper management would likely interpret certain actions as "weakness".

In the 1980's, Johnson and Johnson would sell their Codral product with the line "Soldier on with Codral". The ads showed people being sick, taking the product and "soldering on" at work despite still being infectious. You can get an idea of the mentality here. Now that is the 80's, sure a long time ago, but some older bosses are still in that era and would view the 'namby pampy' later trends as weakness and shirking duty due to bad excuses.

I asked him about his cough and he got a weird look on his face.
"Hey, where'd you get that cough from?" He said it was probably
from being on an airplane with strangers. Then I said ahhh.
I knew he had covid. it's a covid cough.

I made sure i kept distance from him.

And yet.... you also got covid.

So you did nothing. You cannot do shit about other people's behaviors
if you say/do nothing, that is true. You could have done something but
    chose not to.

Bitching about it here in DoveNet doesn't count as anything.

I've gone back to wearing a mask when I'm out in public indoors. So far I've been lucky enough not to have it (I've tested multiple times every time I've had anything that resembles a cold, and I've always been negative), but I don't want to bring it home to my wife who is immune-compromised and super high risk, nor my father who is currently in hospice.

    DaiTengu

well this new one is so damn contagious it's going to be super hard to avoid. since last year i was working in a place that was getting covid cases all the time. i never got it. I was also wearing a mask and gloves at all times, but I think the thing about this new omnicron is it gets you even if you have antibodies or the vaccine.

"BA.5 seems to be the most contagious version to date and is causing most current COVID-19 cases in the US

    Why it matters
BA.5 is causing more reinfection in people who already had COVID-19, including earlier versions of omicron. It's also evading immunity from the vaccines."

we need to take a real proactive approach to eliminating this virus. it's not going to go away and it can mutate into something much worse.

Thats the thing, if people have expressed a sentiment of "he's faking i or "he's probably at the footy", then you want to be sure you're really sick before you take time off.

    What is "at the footy"?

    Nightfox

    Soccer arena or soccer game

well from what i've read about it, productivity wise, working from home demons
    ated successfully.

middle managment usually did not like remote workers because it created more w
k for them. they had to spend time tracking, and they had a poor time adjustin
    to managing remote workers.

In our case, it is an upper manager in our organization (which, I guess, is
a middle manager in the whole) who never adjusted and I suspect did not
    want to.

OTOH, one of my more immediate middle managers seemed not to like it at
first, and was in the office a lot. I hardly ever see them now on the days
I am in. I think they adjusted. :)

And a couple years ago, they were saying people would have to quarantine for 10 days (or was it 2 weeks?) before being safe to be around other people again..?

people and companies want something to blindly follow. that's why they go with part of the cdc guidelines. the thing is, it can vary greatly due to the person and their response to the virus. it can be 10 days total.

It's 7 days here in Melbourne. Odd, we had the world record for longest lockdown at some time, then when things got out of control and the lockdowns were on the nose, they just wound back all restrictions. Now the hospitals ARE overwhelmed and life is back to normal?!?

I can';t recall which company it was, but some exec said employees who would love to stay working at home have a job, but those coming into work have a career and a future at the company. Let's see how HR and employee concerns handles claims of employees when promotions and raises do not happen or are less than expected.

Some of our upper management would like us all back in, too. Based on some things they've said, I suspect it is because they want to be able
to hunt people down and fuss at them for whatever is bothering them.

Insecure upper management thinks that people are pulling one over on them by not working from home.

Poor management manages for effort, not results.

Neither lack of skill lends itself well to capably managing remote teams.
