Hello, moviegoers! Today I am, going to tell you about Evilspeak, a movie which has everything a B-movie lover craves for. It has tits. It has blood. It has an excuse of a plot for sustaining both. Shall we begin the review?
Evilspeak follows a student in a military academy who happens to be a bullying victim. His life changes when he finds a book written by a monk who got exiled from Spain in the Middle Ages due to his deals with the Devil. The book
tells about the protection the Prince of Darkness brings to his loyalists, and the way he brings them power to stand strong against their enemies.
I hope you see where this film is going.
In fact, if there is something to blame on this movie, it is that it reserves absolutely no surprises to the viewer. By minute 15, you already know what is going to happen. I don t think Evilspeak tries to conceal its nature. In fact, I think it banks of the fact you know what is going to happen.
Evilspeak spends the first three quarters of the movie showing how cruel bullies are, how indiferent the teachers are, and how miserable life is for our soon-to-be-satanist. This is not the sort of cheap cheesy bullying you find in familiar movies. This is reality based abuse in which the target is isolated from any support he may get, and teachers blame the victim for being unable to socialize with the other guys
You can tell from early on that this movie is going to be about the academy s cool people systematically ruining anything that matters to our friendly satanist. In fact, the buildup is so well engineered that the guy who had the idea for this movie should be building rockets for NASA. You would think this concept is hard to be put to work, but the pieces somehow fall into place. The machinery is set so you can fucking feel how disgusting the society of the academy is, how our proto-black wizzard is being slowly pushed to his limit... The whole cast is to be praised for their work: the bad guys do an awesome job at being nasty, the good guy does a good job at been a sympathetic loser, and the teachers are awesome at showing they don t really give a damn if somebody is picked on on their watch.
When, as everybody knew was going to happen, our nerd ucalls upon the powers of Hell, the ground cracks and people is torn to pieces by the powers of
darkness, you realize that nobody dies who doesn t deserve it.
This is right. This movie makes you feel that it is ok to hack a bully appart with a sword marked with satanic symbols because he ruined your science project. It is so well done.
Which is not to say this movie is perfect. For one, our nerd interacts with the powers of Hell through a computer which uses very lame UI effects, and the way such is done is not very clear. I think the screenwriter wanted to add a diferentiating touch which made this film stand appart from other satanist related movies, and he thouight throwing tech into the mix was a good way to do it. And it could have worked if he had know the difference between a computer and a microwave, I guess.
On the other hand, the movie bets all its money on the fact the audience s feelings for the nerd and the disgust for his tormentors will keep watchers glued to the screen despite the fact everybody knows where the film is going. If you do not get to feel much for the cast, the movie will not work for you, full stop, which I think is the reaosn why they put so much engineering into the buildup. Appart from, it, there is some gore and bloody murders planted every here and there, but people who wants a slasher film will not make it through, because the bloody sports start very late.
Finally, I want to share some consideration, which is that the film does not try to be satanist, but makes it so satan is the hero of the day.
Shocked? Understandable. Evilspeak is very clear about the fact the Dark Lord thrives with blood sacrifices, that his is a corrupt source of power... but when you analyze the facts, he is a distant lord who protects his loyalists. When you are about to be raped by a pedophile, Satan shows up and trashes the sucker. When somebody steals from you, Satan shows up and rip the sucker s guts. All he wants is for you to sacrifice somebody every now and then, which is not a moral problem, because the sacrificial victim surely deserved to die anyway.
This is in contrast with all the God fearing people in the film, who go to Mass and do rites, but are hypocrites who don t give a shit for Christian values. If you think the reverend in the chapel was going to move a finger for helping a bullying victim, you are up for a disappointment. No Heavenly power aids our nerd in his misery. His only two Earthly friends are powerless. It is old evil Satan who takes mercy by brutally destroying his vassal s enemies and thus protecting him. Sure, he wants your soul, but why would you serve any other lord when only Satan cares?
I do not think this was intended, but by the end of the movie, that is just what I was thinking the movie conveyed. Heck, with all his hellfire and hellspawned beasts and black power, you can tell Satan did no evil in comparison with the bullies.
And that is part of what makes this movie interesting. They made it so the equivalent of high school bullies seem more evil and disgusting than the fucking Prince of Darkness, to the point you are siding with a nerd consumed by hatred who draws upon the powers of Hell.
