I am thinking of writing an outline called "The Third Way of Sexual Education". Its not what a Tennessee Republican or a California
Democrat would want, but it would be a happy middle in our new times.
I think I would have to team up with health educators, parents,
religious leaders, LGBTQ people and much more to make a platform in
this controversial topic.
I think the bigger issue is really that nobody (neither vocal extreme) actually wants a middle ground in practice.
Those who are more conservative in terms of religious values (Christian, Muslim, Jew, etc) don't want anything beyond biological sex, abstinence
and the risks/limitations of pregnancy outside of marriage, if that much.
The far left want sex education to include things like, "men can have
periods, and we should talk about that." This goes well beyond
accepting homosexuality and pan-sexual behaviors.
There isn't really a place for a "middle ground" for either of those two
sides to come to... now 2/3 of the population lay somewhere in the
middle. And that may well be what happens. That said, there will be
pushes towards the extreme, because the extremes are often the most vocal.
When it comes to societal health, I think closer to the conservative
side is probably the more practical approach. Not so much abstinence,
but definitely pointing out the societal issues, and even life issues
that go along with pregnancy outside marriage. Of course, marriage is
its' own can of worms, given the failure rates and the decreasing ability/willingness to actually work towards a committed relationship
and the imbalance that comes from most modern marriages.
FTR, I'm not part of a western or eastern religion, but can see how the
shift away from these structures has been a detriment to society in a
lot of ways. Again, that strays away from Sex Ed, but still a
tangential and probably more important aspect than the sex/procreation knowledge itself.
