Seems like this is only going to go one way. If we sanction them, they'll sanction us... and they're major players in raw metals, grain and oil and gas production. Life is going to get tough for us all if this conflict continues and escalates further. These oil and gas prices are already killing me! Glad I don't have a monster of an engine in my car or a large house to heat up.

The good part of having lands is that if there is food shortage
you can grow your own vegetables.
For small consumption you do not even need fuel, since you can
still plow by hand. It is a lot of work but, historically,
people in cities have it way worse during crisis.
I don't really garden much these days, because I don't have to and
don't have the "spare" time for it, but I could if needed. Definitely
a good skill/knowledge to have.
Basically, I place the sheets on the ground and make holes
through them. Then I plant the tomatoes and their friends
through the holes. Since the growth of weeds is drastically
cut off, it removes a lot of work. THe bad news is a lot of
plants won't do it with such setup (such as potatoes).

I have heard that people have pretty good succes using a straw-
bale technique over the ground for their gardens.

How would that work? Do they cover the ground around the plants you intend to grow with straw or something?
you're concerned about europe? yeah okAndeddu wrote to All <=-

The numbers I've seen don't indicate that we get a small, but significant amount of oil from Russia. I'm more concerned about Europe as they appear to be much more reliant on oil and natural gas from Russia given the proximity.
Boy, it'd be nice if US oil companies and OPEC would boost supply, but
why
would they when they're reaping the profits?

They are not major players in any of that as far as the USA is
concerned. As a citizen of the USA, I'm not concerned about that. Some
of you in the EU may be affected more.
I wouldn't worry too much about that. Things will be quieted down in a
few weeks.

I'd love to have a backup food production plan, more concerned about obtaining water for said crops when SHTF.
I suppose a rainwater catch system is required. I seem to recall one of the US states claiming that rainwater reclamation on your own land was illegal because the water belonged to the state's water table, or some such
nonsense.

Yes on both counts.

And it was not California??? :O California and Texas are the first two that pop into mind for some reason.

Well I heard they produce around 20% of the world's grain along with Ukraine who ar
responsible for around 10% of the world's grain. This will have massive implication
as Ukraine may miss an entire harvest due to the war and Russia will be sanctioning
the trade of commodities with the West. We in Europe are highly dependent on import
from that area. The BBC have already reported that food inflation will go up by aro
15% this year.

I was debating about selling my Prius and getting something a little bigger. I think I'm keeping it around a little longer. It's paid off and gets 52
mpg - higher when I plug it in!
... Where is the edge?Last I checked we were getting like 9% of our oil from Russia. I 'd prefer

Some states claim the rain belongs to them. In places like Colorado, they've had housing developers re-route small rivers and streams to
flow on to people's properties to give them that picturesque view.
Basically it boils down to preventing water from being denied to people who had natural access to it befo re. If you want to be all sneaky
about it, I've seen large plastic tanks designed to fit under decks
that connect to your gutter system.

I can't imagine the mentality of someone who would do such a thing, oblivious to the downstream (no pun intended) consequences.

That's a great idea, much less obvious than a large round tank sitting out in the yard.
... How would someone else do it?

Yes, as most of the problems keep getting worse, or didn't exist at all when Trump was President, I cannot imagine how people eat that up, but some of them still do.

In 2020, the White House said "the laptop" was Russian disinformation.
This past week, both the NY Times and NY Post reported of it existence. So I guess we should call the line above White House disinformation? Psaki disinformation? Biden disinformation? Some disinformation for sure, but
it isn't apparently Russian.
