• Mystic Disconnecting on Netmail View

    From Warpslide@77:1/156 to g00r00 on Sun Jan 10 18:33:32 2021
    Hi James,

    I have a weird issue with some messages between a point I'm feeding (who is using OpenXP). (I'm running A47 2021/01/05 00:09:49 on the Pi)

    The packets that I'm sending him are not being tossed correctly in his
    OpenXP. He was able to track it down to an ANSI BBS Ad posted on SCIADS.

    He then sent me a netmail with some information including the ANSI and ALMOST every time I try to view that netmail message in Mystic it will disconnect me the moment I press enter on the message. On the off chance I CAN view the message, I can scroll until about where the ANSI would start and then I can't scroll any further. Once I press ESC or an arrow to either close the message or move to another message I will then be disconnected.

    Message as displayed:
    https://ibb.co/XynDDcJ

    error.log:
    https://ibb.co/Y2tMgr6

    I was able to press X to export the message & download it. When I view the .TXT file the messages looks normal & unscrambled. I do have that .TXT file if you'd like to see it. Just not sure how to get it to you.

    Have you tried packing your message bases or resetting the message base (/R in the message editor)?

    If your message base gets corrupted sometimes packing it will fix it (its not really packing it triest to repair/recreate while it also packs).

    I thought I was packing my message bases nightly, but it turns out I wasn't, so at least that's happening now.

    After packing my message bases, Mystic would no longer disconnect me when initially viewing that netmail message, but it would still disconnect me when exiting the message reader.

    I next tried the /R on the message base, but I didn't realize that would delete all of my netmails. After restoring those from last nights backup I packed the message base again, went in and just deleted the message in question.

    The curious thing is, I can view the message in SCIADS no problem, just something about receiving the ANSI back from OpenXP causes Mystic to disconnect.

    You shouldn't need to pack your bases nightly its more intended to be sort of a long term maint thing when you take your BBS down or something. It really shouldn't hurt anything but you need to be careful that you're not packing when your BBS is doing other things (like processing mail or users posting) otherwise you could end up with corruption.

    I am really sorry about that I should have been more clear that it would reset the messages.

    Are you comfortable sending me the JAM data files for that message base? If it contains any information/messages you'd like to keep private then don't. I am trying to think of any way I might be able to reproduce an issue here so I can investigate it further. If you want to you can email me the files to mysticbbs@gmail.com or if you need instructions on which files to send let me know.

    This is part of nightly maintenance. I have a BBS event for 00:59 to kick any uses off and then a cron job kicks in at 01:00 which stops mis. That's when it'd be packing message bases along with tar.7z'ing the whole directory for backup.

    What about linking messages? Can that be done when when users are (potentially) online? My mailin.ini currently tosses echomail & tic files and then links messages:

    ImportEchoMail = true
    FileToss = true
    LinkMessages = true

    Yes linking should be fine. Packing is the big risk because its completely recreating your message bases and so if other things are trying to write to them while this stuff is happening the results can be bad.

    I pack my bases manually maybe one every few months personally.
