• D&D

From Netsurge@77:77/5 to All on Sun Aug 25 03:14:42 2019
    From: Netsurge <netsurge@scinet-ftn.org>

I spent Friday at Fan Expo here in Toronto with my 12 year old son, a
friend of his and a friend of mine.

For those that don't know what Fan Expo is, it's a massive Comics,
Gaming, Horror, Sci-Fi and Anime conference here in Toronto (This
ComiCon, but in Canada). It's that largest con of it's type in Canada
and the 3rd largest in North America (only behind ComiCon in San Diego
and NY Comic Con). They had some 300,000 people go through the past 4
    days.

My son is a huge fan of Stranger Things (so am I). When I was his age I
was a big D&D player. We stumbled across a both that was selling
various D&D texts and miniatures. My son started to ask about it and
asked if we could get the Stranger Things started set so that he could
try it out. I gladly picked it up.

To make a long story short, my son, his friend and I spent 5 hours on
Friday playing through the included campaign and this morning I went to
my Mom's place to pick up all my old campaigns and D&D accoutrement. We
spent about 6 hours today playing through an old classic campaign, The
Sunless Citadel with an additional 2 friends.

I am amazed at how popular D&D has become again and I also forgot how
much fun sitting at a table playing through a campaign is. I am also
glad that he is doing something other than playing on his X-Box one or
    using his iPhone.

Patience is definitely a must. When I was younger, we would play
campaigns that took us months to finish.

I've never even finished GTA V because I got bored and just go kill hookers.

I played a few times when I was in high school. Did enjoy it, but we never
did finish a campaign. We'd get a good day or two in and then it would
become too difficult to get everyone together to continue it. :)

My son hosted a campaign last weekend. He's been playing for about a year
now, and it was a lot of fun seeing he and his friends having a great time - my son even had to DM and come up with a campaign on the fly, because the DM flaked on them and couldn't get a ride.

A great time was had by all. One of the dads and I were talking and
considered bringing our characters out to teach them a thing or two. I had a 32nd level Paladin when I played in high school, he mentioned a Magic User about the same level...

I've had to DM for them, as that is what I use to do as a kid. The 5th
edition rules are quite a bit different to the old AD&D rules I was use to. Once I got my feet, a good time was had by all.

Maybe you should join one of our campaigns remotely using roll20.net.

First - yes, I know this is replying to an old message, but

Second - this is a GREAT read and great story!!! I'm not a
high fantasy fan, but everyone (in the gaming world) knows
D&D and has (hopefully fond) memories of it...

Yeah - we don't get together in person much anymore, but we still play
'pencil and paper,' we just use PDF's now and we use Slack to play as
much as possible. For over 3 years we were getting together weekly to
use roll20 to play. This works for us because the closest two players
are to each other are me and Chris, and that's a 30 minute drive. The
other three? One 2 hours away, one in Florida and one in Indy... No way
we could get together 'live' any more than once or twice a year...

Big ones are great for what they are, big ass events where you get to meet
new people and see things you would otherwise never see. Although, I prefer smaller events. You tend to find better deals there. We hold a yearly "World
of Commodore" event just outside Toronto, you get many 100-150 come through
but you end up getting great deals on products.
