Looks like I can send and receive. I wondering if I am missing something with areafix. It looks like a lot of stuff downloaded, but nothing populated my message bases.

If you want all the old messages, you need to rescan them.

Send a message to areafix with %HELP in the body and you will get a help file back showing you how to rescan.
