Echomail is fun! I can't believe I waited like 30 years to get into it!

I'm carrying 4 echomail networks now, and by the time I'm done reading
messages and I poll again, there's a whole bunch more to read!

I like it. Now I understand the hype. But people should post more! (I have an addictive personality!)

Just remember that there's no swearing on Fidonet. When someone swears on Fidonet, it kills everyone's buzz except for the moderators. It will only enhance the moderator's buzz :)

Which networks are you on now? If you haven't checked out DOVE-Net, I'd get on there too. It's quite busy and sometimes inflammatory.

It's a QWK network, so a little different (but still pretty easy) to get going with Mystic.

Agreed. I think *most* users are probably intimidated by logging in and
hitting the message area only to be greeted by hundreds of echos and tens of thousands of messages to look through. At least I now I am. Distortion is currently a member of 4 networks but none of them are extremely active so my new scans are *usually* easy to manage.

I'm sure there's a logical reason why these nets have a stats echo (it's notjust Scinet) but I haven't figured it out yet.

Stats have got to be important to some people with all the stats options thatare built into Mystic.

There are users who are stats nerds, keeping them in one echo is a better idea than them flooding echo's. This way they are in one place where people who want to read them can.

It depends on where you are at on Fidonet. I moderate one echo where I have been lax on that, but there have been a couple of less-than-adults who have taken advantage. I ask them not to excessively swear and they get a buzz. :)

Ha! I'm getting a buzz from all this buzztalk and I'm not even high! :)

I only got a buzz when I figured out that I could bit-bucket

    FSE!

I don't like messaging online for several reasons. That's even more true with modern web forums, but it's still somewhat true with BBSs. In the case of BBSs, ease of navigation is the main issue - the interface is designed for reading via a slow modem. The other issue is you're at the mercy at network dropouts, lag, etc.

    Hello Warpslide (& The Godfather)!

On 07 Jan 2021, Warpslide said the following...
There's not really an application per say, you just create a QWK account on Vertrauen (vert.synchro.net) and then create a QWK network on Mystic usingBlack Panther's instructions available on his BBS at bbs.castlerockbbs.com(look for the file ms-qwk12.zip).

Yes, those instructions are very nice!

Speaking of which, I thought I'd chime in and provide the QWK settings that I'm currently using at Vertrauen with my QWK account there and Mystic 1.12 A47, in case it helps anyone (as there are so many options to choose from nowadays):

[A] Ctrl-A Color Codes : Expand to ANSI
    [T] Archive Type : zip
    [E] Include E-mail Messages : Yes
[I] Include File Attachments : Yes
    [D] Delete E-mail Automatically : Yes
[F] Include New Files List : No
[N] Include Index Files : Yes
[C] Include Control Files : Yes
    [V] Include VOTING.DAT File : No
    [H] Include HEADERS.DAT File : No
[Y] Include Messages from You : No
    [Z] Include Time Zone (@TZ) : No
    [P] Include Message Path (@VIA) : No
    [M] Include Message/Reply IDs : No
    [U] Include UTF-8 Characters : Yes
[X] Extended (QWKE) Packet Format: Yes

As you can see from [E], [I] and [D], should I receive any "local" ("e-mail") messages at Vertrauen addressed to my QWK account, it will fetch those too and delete them from Vertrauen. Not sure how they will be handled by Mystic, though...

For the Mystic events acting on outgoing/incoming QWK messages, I
    have the following three.

First the one watching for the semaphore that Mystic creates when there is QWK mail to be sent out:

ÜÜ Û ÄÄÄÛ Active ³ Yes ÛÄÄÄÄ
ÛÛÜÜÛ YesÛ Description ³ CUSTOM: Send QWK network mail Sun ³ No Û °ÛÜÜ
°ÛÛÛÛ YesÛ Event Type ³ Semaphore Mon ³ No Û
    ß ²ÛÛÛ YesÛ Exec Hour ³ 0 Tue ³ No Û
    ² ±²²Û YesÛ Exec Min ³ 0 Wed ³ No Û °²°
    ß Û°°Û YesÛ Shell ³ timeout -k 600 --preserve-stat Thu ³ No ÛWTFS °Û° °°²ÛÛÛ YesÛ Semaphore ³ qwkmail.out Fri ³ No ÛWTFS °
    ÜÜþ ßÛ YesÛ Kill After ³ qwkmail.out Sat ³ No Û °
    Û YesÛ Warning ³ 0 Û ° ßÜ

    Full Shell should read:

    timeout -k 600 --preserve-status -v 600 ./qwkpoll all

(This is on Linux, and I use the timeout command to safeguard against any lock-ups, although I have only seen such sporadically with "mis poll" and not with "qwkpoll" so far. But better safe than sorry... I think those lock-ups were due to some timer bug, by the way -- presumably a combo of FreePascal and its timer functions and my Debian system. Edit the Shell as desired.)

Then a similar one for a semaphore ("qwkpoll.now") that I can create manually when I want to force a poll, e.g. from the SysOp menu in Mystic (using the !C Create semaphore function):

ÜÜ Û ÄÄÄÛ Active ³ Yes
ÛÄÄÄÄ ÛÛÜÜÛ YesÛ Description ³ CUSTOM: Poll QWK networks Sun ³ No Û °ÛÜÜ °ÛÛÛÛ YesÛ Event Type ³ Semaphore Mon ³ No Û ß ²ÛÛÛ YesÛ Exec Hour ³ 0 Tue ³ No Û
    ² ±²²Û YesÛ Exec Min ³ 0 Wed ³ No ÛWTFS °²°
    ß Û°°Û YesÛ Shell ³ timeout -k 600 --preserve-stat Thu ³ No ÛWTFS °Û° °°²ÛÛÛ YesÛ Semaphore ³ qwkpoll.now Fri ³ No Û °
    ÜÜþ ßÛ YesÛ Kill After ³ qwkpoll.now|qwkmail.out Sat ³ No Û °
    Û YesÛ Warning ³ 0 Û ° ßÜ

    Full Shell should read:

    timeout -k 600 --preserve-status -v 600 ./qwkpoll all

And, finally, a conventional hourly polling:

ÜÜ Û ÄÄÄÛ Active ³ Yes ÛÄÄÄÄ
ÛÛÜÜÛ YesÛ Description ³ CUSTOM: Poll QWK networks Sun ³ No Û °ÛÜÜ
°ÛÛÛÛ YesÛ Event Type ³ Interval Mon ³ No Û
    ß ²ÛÛÛ YesÛ Exec Hour ³ 1 Tue ³ No Û
    ² ±²²Û YesÛ Exec Min ³ 0 Wed ³ No Û °²°
    ß Û°°Û YesÛ Shell ³ timeout -k 600 --preserve-stat Thu ³ No ÛWTFS °Û° °°²ÛÛÛ YesÛ Semaphore ³ Fri ³ No ÛWTFS °
    ÜÜþ ßÛ YesÛ Kill After ³ qwkpoll.now|qwkmail.out Sat ³ No Û °
    Û YesÛ Warning ³ 0 Û ° ßÜ

    Full Shell should read:

    timeout -k 600 --preserve-status -v 600 ./qwkpoll all

Worth noting, if I recall correctly, is that after receving (importing) QWK mail, qwkpoll creates the "qwkmail.out" semaphore again, causing another poll to Vertrauen (which will then receive nothing new). Not sure why this is so, but... Haven't double-checked this for a while, though. It might be something in the prealphas.

    Best regards

QWK is hilarious. I know I just heard people talking about having Y2K problems with their BlueWave reader. I tried QWK back in the early 90s when it made a lot more sense to use it. But nothing beats Mystic's FSE!

I don't like messaging online for several reasons. That's even more true wi modern web forums, but it's still somewhat true with BBSs. In the case of BBSs, ease of navigation is the main issue - the interface is designed for reading via a slow modem. The other issue is you're at the mercy at network dropouts, lag, etc.

... If it walks out of your refrigerator, let it go.
    === MultiMail/Win v0.51

I think messaging online is quite bearable with BBS.

I am the sort of person who always sets a dedicated desktop, local client for everything if possible, be it email, calendar managing or whatever. Mostly, it is because web interfaces suck and deserve to burn in hell alongside their designers.

However, BBS interfaces are so minimal and uninstrusive once you learn them, I haven't bothered to get a local client installed. Old good Columbian Kermit suffices.

Lag and drop-outs are not what they used to be. I have had some bugs in the BBS I connect to kill my messages, though, by hanging as I was writing them, and that is crappy.

I only got a buzz when I figured out that I could bit-bucket
one of them from my board and any boards that get the echo from me. :D

What's bit-bucketing? Like a blacklist of their username?

Means that their messages go into the bit-bucket... file 13... into the
    wind... :D

Yeah, their posts don't show up or get passed on from here.

+1 on this, and I offer FTN feeds for it for those who have issues getting it via QWK.

Excellent! I'll try the QWK instructions first, but I haven't applied to Dovenet yet.

Well, you don't really apply. You just log onto VERT with your chosen BBS
QWK ID and, go through the new user questions and, when it asks you if your
new ID is meant for QWK networking, you say yes and then you are a QWK node!

Do you know what's up with the National Cooking echo? I talked with some people in there a little, and they are a friendly bunch, but they finish every
message with a recipe! It's charming, but I wonder if I'm breaking tradition by posting in there because I don't have any recipes?

LOL I am in the same boat! I am not much of a cook or baker, but I like reading about what sounds like delicious food! <GRIN> Sometimes I
respond, and I also get the "answer with a reciple included" treatment.

They are a friendly bunch, and that is one of the most active echos.

I know - I should ask THEM, but each time they toss a recipe at me I feel like
I should quietly tiptoe backwards on out of there! The only recipes I have are
the ones on the back of the mac & cheese box.

They do like it when you share recipes, but I don't think it is required.
If it is, I have broken that rule A LOT!

There are like 3 echos that are all cooking. I think 2 of them are just recipes, but COOKING has these really in depth conversations about food

I like them. I just need to explore the world's recipes more so I can find something to share with those guys.

I explained to those guys about me having the problem of buying 2 brand new
gas ranges, from 2 different stores, that are both fucked up and won't burn
off (They smell like plastic no matter what, and will even make the food taste like plastic.)

They broke out recipe mode for a little while, and started offering me support with that problem, and then they followed up with some no-bake recipes for me since they see that my oven's fucked up.

They are nice! I just need to learn how to help them in some of their cooking scenarios so I can repay the favor.

The constant posting of Meal Master recipes is fun. Some of the things they post look really complicated to cook. If I have to make a sauce separate from the food, I'm out.

Do you mean they are just tossing me some random recipes from a book? Like using recipes as taglines?

I don't know if it's random or not, but Meal Master is an old DOS-based recipe manager that they are using to post all those recipes to Fidonet. I'm not sure if Meal Master can automatically import from Fidonet or not, but it seems like they must have massive databases of recipes by now.

In reality, the three other ZC's I deal with... one is a crazy Belgian who is always curious about whom I'm fucking and has provided sound encouragement for me to fuck human females and not socks as often as possible. Another is an
okay techie Linux guy but largely silent. And one does not speak English at all; so other ZC's must resort to Google Translate. And wait for a lonnnnnnng time for a response. We call that the Twilight Zone.

So thats four of us that make up the ZCC... zone coordinator counsel. The
echo of which consists of, ZC1 consuming vodka or ZC2 vacationing on his boat trading banter about shitting in a cardboard box at sea.

That is the current political structure of Fidonet.

The technical structure is even more silly, just a bunch of MS-DOS programs that compile segments from RC's and ZC's. Silly programs to produce a silly nodelist. But if that nodelist encounters a "problem" or is not published on time you can bet that the ZC in question will *never* hear the end of it.

I don't feel the least bit bad about Parler. They bragged about

This. Without an easily installable Google/Apple/Amazon app, a chat platform is totally useless. Its fun to ponder about Trump joining Fido but if its not an app its useless.

Its another reason why Fido is a dead-end... no app. Hotdoged "maybe" came close but is still a buggy techie mess. Telegram gating is a joke. There is
no way any newcomers are going to get their heads around having to install a mailer or a BBS or shimming things through another chat platform or anything beyond the concept of a simple all-in-one app. If they don't see *the*
official "Fidonet App" its seen as techie nerd bullshit and we've lost them.

I think Parler is gonna be back. I have heard they have a week-long migration plan to another provider.

Besides I suspect if Parler did get wiped oup, people would move to Gab or to a Mastodon instance that peered with Gab.

Wiped, how? I just checked it out a few minutes ago. It's still
active. It may be booted from Amazon, Apple and GooglePlay, but
the .APK is available for download direct from the Parle website

Parler was deployed on AWS so they can have their servers shut down by Amazon, which is why I have heard they are moving their infrastructure over.

This sort of crap is the reason why I use cloud hosting for playing and experimenting, and have everything that really needs to work running in-premises.

That is because Apple's business is pandering to computer illiterates that believe they know about computers. There are lots of Apple users who know what they are doing but they are not the largest demographic target for them.

It is in their best interest to let users do as little as possible with their products, as to be able to force them to pay more if they want to purchase more capabilities, and reduce customer support overload from fools.

As with Ubuntu, I have seen enough iOS bugs that are not worthy of a system for computer illiterates to believe they are better systems for computer illiterates than other alternatives.

But that is not the point. The point is that Apple considers its users unworthy of using software not aproved by them. This is a LARGE drawback, of the sort that may seem fine today but may get bad tomorrow.

The realistic alternative for business is Android, which is just barely better and has its own pile of shortcommings. Sure, you can run custom firmware (which are fucking awesome), but then banking apps and some messaging systems that are a must-have for business just won't work for you.

It only gets more Cyberpunk than that if it comes with computer implants.

Amazon delists the books that don't follow the party line.

Then Google delists your independent shop from its lists of
results unless you remove the book from sale.

Google is not the only search engine out there. Independents can
encourage people to shift to DuckDuckGo, for example.

The Google search engine right now doesn't even find the many
sources of a particular book when independents use the web/
shopping services with http://bookmanager.com (I'd use it if I
had the $5K start-up price) It's up to the independent seller to
    market their own site.

I believe you. But then they would have to influence one of the
    biggest distributors out there: https://www.ingramcontent.com

Amazon and Indigo both obtain stock through them. I know. I've
had packing lists and invoices included in error in *my* orders.

I have been hopping from an alternative search engine to another for years and I am aware they exist and some are actually good. But getting delisted of the main one is really bad for a website.

Also I love it when they leave the invoices of their providers in your packages. Such a rich resource of providers :-P

What everybody is doing is building phones based on Replicant or Lineageos.

They don't fare well because they lack Google integration. That means lots of business apps won't work. You can install Google cruft on it but that defeats the point imo.

I bet those die hard against "big tech censorship" would. Then again, I would expect most who are really serious about it to be on the "dark

Yea. I'm against "big tech censorship," but I'm currently using an iphone, so
I don't even have any black market app stores at my disposal.

If I were still using Android, I still wouldn't want apps from outside the Google Play Store. I'm a Republican supporter, but my phone will always be a Democrat.

No, they are doing this because stock smartphones are only good if you use them how Google and Apple intend you to use them,
which is through their ecosystems so they can mine the crap out of your data.

Main reason why people started experimenting with alternative firmwares was precisely that it allowed to run crazy stuff and
customizations. A lot of people in this day and age still install custom firmwares for the ability to use some custom
application-launcher overlay and then they install Google's ecosystem on top of it anyway.

Using custom builds allows you to implement things at low level like ad blockers, which Google does not allow under ToS. There
are ways to run an ad blocker in stock Android but it ilvolves loading custom applications you have built or sourced from a
    third party repository so...

There are a lot of arguments here but the one that's most compelling to me is that if you're able to be spied on by the company, you can be compromised
when your data is exfiltrated. Signal doesn't decrypt anything; it's all end
to end and private, so even if your data is exfiltrated, it's not useful
(until we can break the encryption which would take a lot of effort and

Apple has some very strong privacy policies, and with new features like the "App Nutrition Label" apps have to be up-front about how they use your data too.

Now that the Nutrition Label (Privacy disclosure) is now required to submit an app to the app store, Google has stopped updating their Apple apps.

There is a site called osnews.com that had a link to a good article about
what is happening there. Basically WhatsApp was marketed as having great encryption and privacy. Now, because they have got their hands slapped for spying on you via other non-owned plaforms, Facebook (who now owns
WhatsApp) is forcing users to allow WhatsApp to share information with
Facebook so that they can tailor their advertising for you and make $$$
    from the ad companies.

In short, that means an application that was supposed to be ahead of others when it came to privacy and not spying on you will now be spying on you.

That is too bad, because I think such projects are very interesting.

One thing civ is sorely missing is the capability of building complex comm tech with limited means. It would make the population less dependand on Tech Giants.

There are Apocalypse operating systems designed for working in a Mad Max scenatio in which the only microprocessor you can source is the one your pocket calculator has
inside. I think it'd be cool if we had open hardware designs that could be implemented with common tools just in case you needed to put a computer together without
reliying in Big Tech. Like that Macroprocessor that they made at some University.

The problem comes when you work in such an environment that you either use WhatsApp or you just don't do business.

In such case you only rational option is to have a separate phone line for professional activities and run all the propietary anti-privacy surveilling crap on that machine, that only runs during work hours and does not get exposed to your personal information.

Signal has a big of a prohblem regarding concealing phone numbers. The hash space is a bit small, so in theory they could try harvesting phone numbers via hash attacks.

I think using phone numbers for account identification is a moronic idea which only makes sense for the sake of simplifying helpdesk when your userbase has no discipline to use a username and a password. The model really release the customer support burden A LOT at the expense of requiring an important piece of information from the user that should not be necesary to operate the service.

If I understood it correctly, its a little deeper than that. Whatsapp will now be sharing your telephone number AND metadata across any app/service that Facebook owns.

This means tracking, purchasing histories and much more.

could install the app on my desktop *first* (unlike Signal which
forces you to install the app on a phone first), the
registration required that they send a code via SMS - and that

In Telegram's case, it doesn't necessarily have to be your own

I forget what the company is called. Basically he wants to be the holder of all your personal info, and then you authorize individual apps or companies a temporary license to access that personal info. So maybe your address and CC info is stored there, and when you want to check out you "approve" the store accessing that info, but only once.

My social network app that I was telling you about in a previous thread - It was very private. I used an API called Rumbletalk, I had private video and voice calling just like WhatsApp. I only collected username & password.

Everything account-related was hosted on my vps, but Rumbletalk hosted the voice/video calls on their servers. The users had SSL connections to my website, and I delivered the web content over the app.

Anything can be done on the web and I think big tech will someday realize that people are smart enough to use web browsers and that they can delete the play store in a single swipe.

I forget what the company is called. Basically he wants to be the
holder ofall your personal info, and then you authorize individual apps
or companies atemporary license to access that personal info. So maybe your address and CCinfo is stored there, and when you want to check out you "approve" the storeaccessing that info, but only once.

Some sort of blockchain scheme, I assume?

If I understood it correctly, its a little deeper than that. Whatsapp
will now be sharing your telephone number AND metadata across any app/service that Facebook owns.

I can tell that it's an invasion of privacy, although probably legally disclosed in their privacy policy. But what harm can it do if big tech finds ou about stuff I ordered or that I used Google maps to find a place?

Not sure. The company is Inrupt.com.
    It's based on solidproject.org.

Well... because that data is worth so much to them. Because we are just used, for it. Because they use that data, to create new products [services, usually... sales at other times.] to suck more our societies time, energy and ultimately money.

During covid, the 10 richest folks in the world have gained multiples of 2x their net worth. This one asian 0.94 billionairre is worth like 50B today, one year later.

I guess the main reason I'm against it all is the insane wealth inequality - but don't want to sound like a talking head. Thats some of the reason I was posting about the internet inventor guy who was wanting to 'pitch a new internet'... these riches shouldn't be in the hands of those who get it from US.

I mean... great job for what they DID with tech - but I think its time the people start backing things that will serve US, and not a literal handful of tech CEOs in California...

WE can change; FB [whatsapp, other services with TOS's that lock in their success and our giving them the keys to the castle.] isn't the answer.

But I don't know what the big deal is. If big tech wants to
spy on our internet calls, why not just let them?

Oh.. that's the old "if not doing anything bad, then nothing to
    hide" argument.

Everyone has *something* to hide or to be ashamed of.

A good presentation of "what the big deal is" and "why not let
them" is in this TED talk:

It would be unethical to make demands to a free service provider. If they spy, then I no longer need their free service. I'm not going to sue them or expect them to get over themselves.

The further argument that interests me is "big tech", in this case, is really just a bunch of jackass people like you and me. So if we say we don't care about "big tech" spying on people, we say we don't care about people spying
    on people.
