I managed to save the week by selling on friday everything I had not sold sincemonday, so right now I am in a quest for another Rogelike gam to try. Originalrogue is great but I have been playing it too much. Hyper Rogue is cool but Iam also wearing it off - besides, anything tha is not the standard gameplay isbuggy. Angband sounds nice if a bit grindy.
I like the Doom one thats like Rogue-like-doom or.... and theres two version one is completely terminal text based but the other one, while it still uses text based, has some better 'graphics'. If needed, I can find the name to bo of these but... do you know what I'm talking about?
Its fun for a weekend or so.
I know which one you are talking about, but I have never tried it.
I am coming to like Dungeon Crawl: Stone Soup. It is tough, but cheap causes of player death are mostly absent, and there is a lot of depth into character development. It is not like Rogue V3 in which your fate is settled at dungeon level two, when you are surrounded by hobgobs and are wearing -3 cursed items because that is what the RNG threw your way.
That is something that always bothered me with original Rogue. You don't get much equipment, the one you get is always unidentified, and a lot of it is cursed. Since equipment is what makes or breaks your rogue, whether you last or don't is more a matter of luck than tactics. I still like it for quick games during breaks but beating it feels like bruteforcing the RNG.
Angband is veeeery grindy, and also has the issue of unidentified items, but at least gives you more options to deal with them.
With Dungeon Crawl it feels like you are always getting marginally useful stuff and you are left to decide how to combine your 900 options into a killer combo. I guess the late game must be an exercise in munchkinism.
