Well, let's cheer it up, shall we?

I managed to save the week by selling on friday everything I had not sold since monday, so right now I am in a quest for another Rogelike game to try. Original rogue is great but I have been playing it too much. Hyper Rogue is cool but I am also wearing it off - besides, anything that is not the standard gameplay is buggy. Angband sounds nice if a bit grindy.

Eventually I ended giving Dungeon Crawl: Stone Soup a try and the concept seems interesting. I managed to get killed in the tutorial because I am still trying to come to terms with the interface.

PS: If you want to lecture me because I am doing roguelikes instead of working to serve my literary preorders, I just finished editing chapter 4 of The Flaming Wrath of Árelor which puts me about 3 months ahead of schedule.

Its fun for a weekend or so.

I know which one you are talking about, but I have never tried it.

I am coming to like Dungeon Crawl: Stone Soup. It is tough, but cheap causes of player death are mostly absent, and there is a lot of depth into character development. It is not like Rogue V3 in which your fate is settled at dungeon level two, when you are surrounded by hobgobs and are wearing -3 cursed items because that is what the RNG threw your way.

That is something that always bothered me with original Rogue. You don't get much equipment, the one you get is always unidentified, and a lot of it is cursed. Since equipment is what makes or breaks your rogue, whether you last or don't is more a matter of luck than tactics. I still like it for quick games during breaks but beating it feels like bruteforcing the RNG.

Angband is veeeery grindy, and also has the issue of unidentified items, but at least gives you more options to deal with them.

With Dungeon Crawl it feels like you are always getting marginally useful stuff and you are left to decide how to combine your 900 options into a killer combo. I guess the late game must be an exercise in munchkinism.

Yea... well, theres the original DoomRL thats completely in true text, and then theres another version of it that has SOME graphical stuff, but its still not like... GRAPHICS Doom. It just has some graphical borders and small upgrades from the completely terminal DoomRL.

You have it running as a door, or for DL??? :P That would be sweet, running it online.

I /think/ these are the same game, it's just that you have the option to play in a terminal with utf8 characters or you can play some SDL version locally.
I could be wrong but a lot of roguelikes have this feature nowadays.

You have it running as a door, or for DL??? :P That would be sweet, running it online.

As a door :) I have a bunch of roguelikes. The clever use of creating one-off dirs per user and simlinking binaries and the basic structure of the game
allow this, but it's still not true multiplayer or anything.

Very cool... I love playing old Ascii games, such as ascii sector, cataclysm, doomRL, and others. So fun.
