I just finished reading Ian Rankin's latest Book, A Song For The Dark Times.

Rankin is one of my favourite fiction authors. Neither SciFi or Fantasy
(my usual goto genres), It's a police procedural based on a gritty
    Scotland cop, John Rebus.

Rankin was a punk musician in a past life and he throws in musical
    references in his novels.

If you are looking for something different, check out his line of Rebus
    based novels.

Sounds interesting, I'll add it to my Christmas list! I'm not sure if you like the spy/espionage genre but I really dig Vince Flynn and Daniel Silva books, sometimes David Baldacci. What I like about Vince Flynn (may he R.I.P) is sticking with the same main character "Mitch Rapp." The story line is really good and not nearly as long or technical as a Clancy read. More about a college kid losing his parents to terrorists gone CIA notorious hitman. Pretty good stuff.

I'll be sure to check out Ian Rankin.

Love Daniel Silva. The first book I read of his was The English Assassin and I quickly read the rest.

I don't mind Flynn but lean more towards Robert Lundlum.

Circling back to Ian Rankin, ITV in the UK did a TV series called Rebus which was based on his books, Each episode was movie length (90 mins or so without commercials) and was based on one book. 14 episodes/books in total. A great way to catch up on the books, but reading them is still better.

ha! That was the same book I read too! Silva's character Gabriel is something else! I have a lot of catching up to do on his books because Flynn has a shadow writer now .... Kyle Mills. I haven't read his books yet (of Flynn's) but hope they are as good.

I don't mind Flynn but lean more towards Robert Lundlum.

I've heard Lundlum is a great read, I have yet to buy any of his books, any recommendations on where to start? With 3 kids in the household, 1 out, and an addiction to BBS'ing and binge watching, I read less these days, but wouldn't mind doing moreso during this winter.

I agree, the books are always better. However a 14 episode TV series on a single book, is the way to do it. They tried to introduce Flynn's first book into a movie, and while I enjoyed the movie, it was like watching versus reading the Da Vinci Code. No comparison, too many detaņils left out, and the obvious -- the characters never look like you envision when you read a book first. I've already bookmarked a page for Rankin within my browser and will pick a book tomorrow. Thanks for the suggestion.

Much like Flynn, Kyle Mills and Eric Van Lustbader are writing the Lundlum stuff, after he passed.

He has a few different series that follow the same character and some independent novels.

I would start with The Bourne Identity which is what the movie is based on.

As for standalone works, The Prometheus Deception is my favorite.

Rankin is a steady favourite in my shop. The previously used copies don't stay on the shelves for too long. People are anxious to get their hands on the latest "A Song..", which is supposed to be very well done. It's rankin' (pun intended) high on the order charts.

He came to a book festival a few years back here in Toronto. He did a reading of his first Malcolm Fox novel. I took the opportunity to bring a few of my hardcovers with me and got him to sign them.

I can attest to the fact the latest book was a classic. Just caz Rebus is old don't make him any less dangerous.

You will pickup all sorts of stuff from the books that were missed in the movies, much like every other movie ever produced from a book.

Yes! Bourne movies are great. Even the dumb one without Damon. I like the international locations, the crazy cinematography, all of it. I haven't read the books either -- but I probably should. Just like I should eat better.

I think only the first Bourne films (up to the third, may be) were actually relevant. The rest could have been just called The Bourne Redundancy I/II/III[...].

The one that dealt with the Ourcome program in particular felt like a cheapo shoehorning into the franchise.

Ya know .. I think they were spread out so far that they could remake the originals .. I tried watching the first the other day, and the cinematography was horrible compared to todays standards. I'd have to re watch the newer ones before I'd agree .. It's been some time and/or maybe I missed a few. Once my kids consumed the TV, my movie purchases declined significantly other then Super Hero flicks.
