Bah, you kids and your fancy new technology what is this spider net discord thing you speak of.

I've been using Discord a lot over the past eight months or so and have really come to like it (possibly more than IRC at this point). Really great set of features, fun to write bots for, decent mobile app.

I'm on a couple of different BBS-related "servers" but both are pretty dead.

Anyway, check it out - you might like it.

I think it's time you discover the joys of Discord, my friend. I've used it for several years now (though mostly for gaming - a lot less for BBS scene stuff) and like it quite a lot.

Clearly my joke was a bad joke gone wrong. I know what Discord is, lol. I'm part of a few Commodore hardware servers that I participate in. As for BBS based ones, what do you recommend?

I'm not a big fan of them not allowing self hosted servers. I've never been crazy about others hosting data.

Same - having a single session across multiple devices/web browsers/etc is a thing IRC really sucks at doing. Plus the ability to search a channel's
history (and you don't need to be logged in the whole time to see all
    history, unlike IRC).

I'm on a couple of different BBS-related "servers" but both are pretty dead.

Araknet's is the most active IMO. There are also Amiga related discords, I think...

Yeah, we use Zulip at work and most of my convos happen over sms with people. I am part of a few Commodore hardware discords but that's it really.

Last time I used it I thought it was bloated crap.

I know I am the happy waterparties of SciNet but I really had to say it :-)

It is one of those all-in-one solutions that tries to do everything at the expense of your computing resources. And you are required to register with Discord even if you want to use a third party server, if I recall correctly, which is really "puah".

I'd rather use XMPP/IRC for text and Mumble for voice myself.

Just posting because I don't want unanimity regarding the wonderful heavenly qualities of any bloatware.

    Cheers!

Hmm. It's honestly one piece of software that I've never regarded as bloated. In fact, when I first started using it years ago I marveled at how well it seemed to run and how stable it was compared to some of its competition I'd used heavily years earlier (old stuff like TeamSpeak and Ventrilo, mostly.) Sure, it can do a lot of things, but they're all tied to a particular purpose
    - it's not like they're throwing in tons of features that are unrelated to
the app's core function, or at least not to my knowledge.

It is one of those all-in-one solutions that tries to do everything at
the expense of your computing resources.

I mean, my install takes under 300 megs and I'm on a dozen or more servers, some of which are fairly active, and it's using under 100mb of RAM and almost zero CPU right now. The mobile app also works quite well in my experience. I have occasionally had voice crap out during a session and other random server problems, but it's pretty rare. Certainly nowhere near as bad as net splits
are these days on most of the big IRC networks.

And you are required to register with Discord even if you want to use a third party server, if I recall.

I believe that is correct. While I don't care too much about making accounts,
I am more concerned about what is done with all of that lovely data they maintain. Privacy is definitely a concern, though it's not like it wasn't with IRC servers. I know there has been some controversy around how they handle data in their terms of service, though I can't recall any *actual* cases of them getting caught doing anything shady.

Just posting because I don't want unanimity regarding the wonderful heavenly qualities of any bloatware.

    To each his own.
