I had a VERY interesting evening, with Indiana Jones Raiders of the Lost Ark for the Atari 2600....

What can I say... what fun that was, seriously, dad and daughter with this freaking game. We both agreed this was a VERY advanced game for its time.

More advanced than Swordquest. Oh man thats whats "missing". Games that either you *needed* the manual or you were lost. Exploring meant many hours of dying.

Goddamn us all with script-language, object oriented programming. F that, give me assembler-language, raster based programming of the Atari.

Yars Revenge and Pitfall were a masterpiece of 6502 assembler programming.

Times were different. Programmers were very limited with what they could do
so they had to be very creative with what they had which made for incredible games for it's time.

I'm a big Vectrex collector (14 games away from a full boxed collection). I still spend time every week playing with my Vectrex.

My personal 2600 favorite is Berzerk!! However, I have Raiders and I'll have to give it a play. I play my Atari on a 1942 Philco Predicta tuba b&w television... LOVE IT!

Thanks for yer post, you got me thinking of rocking some Atari -- I might even throw the old NES on the big screen... w00t w00t, Atreyu!

Have you read Raising the Bar from MIT press? Fantastic book that goes into some of the nitty gritty of VCS programming along with early Atari history. I always recommend it and I Am Error (similar title about the NES) to vintage programming fans.

Yeah that's an impressive 2600 game for sure! Another one with a similar scale of adventure/inventory is Riddle Of The Sphinx by IMAGIC.

Hahaha I know it often gets a bad rep but I actually enjoyed the game as a kid. Still play it occasional for the nostalgia honestly, that pitter patter sound of him walking around is almost soothing in a way. :)

Now if we want to talk awesome 2600 games, here's a few I really love...

    Frostbite
    Pressure Cooker
    Beamrider
    Empire Strikes Back
    Pitfall II
    Missile Command
Phoenix/Demon Attack (these two are so similar but still great)
    Atlantis

Good thing I have my MiST because now talking about these requires me to play them and my 2600 is all packed up!

I did end up taking a page out of Nick's book and tried playing a few 2600 games with my 14 year old son. Didn't go so well. He really only enjoys going as far back as the SNES with the Saturn being his favorite.
