• WWIV Net?

    Howdy,

Is WWIVNet still a thing? Are there any boards that are members where I can check it out?

    Hey Bob,

Yes it is! It's becoming more active as some of us Mystic SysOps are starting second BBS's under WWIV's new 5.5 (for nostalgia ..) I'm running WWIVnet, SciNet, and FSXnet on my WWIV and Mystic boards.

It is, bob... I have it on my Mystic BBS... you should login regardless, cause I dig you as a member of our BBS scene... 20ForBeers.com:1337 ... and furthermore, WWiVnet is pretty cool about letting outsiders, non-WWiV sysOps, joining up...

It's great to see all of these old BBS packages getting some new life.

Yea, netsurge.. altho I haven't been motivated enough to run a WWIV instance, it is cool to see is #1 being developed further and #2 so many people/sysOps resurging around it. heck, it pumps me up just ot have new, different systems to dial into...

I installed the latest WWIV in a VM just to play with it, and see what had changed since the late 80's when I last ran it on an IBM PC with dual 360k floppies. The answer? Not much. All the new internet stuff obviously, but the menus and the UI and the configuration is all very similar to how it once was. It looks like it's a lot more customizable now, which is cool..... but I'm still drawn to Synchronet for some reason.

Yea, WWiV is cool - BECAUSE of what is still is... that old system, with the new bells and whistles needed to run a full service BBS in 2020... I also like that they have a current development team that is working on it. Whenever you get people together, working on a software in the current - good things happen and it moves along. If they keep doing so, it will grow and get better.

I, also, ran a Sync BBS for a while... I think if you're talking about SBBS or Mystic, its just what type of customization you want to do... since I come from Renegade, originally, Mystic is just a better fit for me. Take that, and the fact that I know more about Python than I do Java, and Mystic is where I live.

SBBS is super powerful... and you CAN modify anything you want to... but IMO the Mystic community is - well yea, I think I'll say better. Theres cooler clicks, and even if yer not the most elite guy in the world you can find a group of friends who are actively customizing it. And thats what I found in Mystic... while SBBS has a great group of programmers developing it, I don't think they have the community that Mystic does. There are so many stock SBBS boards that never really change. A lot of people just run an SBBS and thats it- which is fine... for them.

I enjoy, in Mystic, THIS - the community available within it... priceless to me, as I just want to LIVE socially in the BBS world. Glad you love Sync; it is badass... I'll have to dial into your system soon.

It comes in as a FTN. It's only a subset of the network, but you have to run WWIV to get access to everything.
