From HusTler@77:77/10 to All on Tue Nov 10 20:18:32 2020

Pzier said today they have a vaccination that's 90 percent effective. And that has nothing to do with the election? Come on Man! So who decides who gets it? Who decides who distributes it? What affect will the transition have? Wow. What a mess. I'm sick of all this shit. I'm definetly sick of people. Especially women. It's the women that voted for Biden and Harris. I hold all the women in this country accountable for the next 4 years of political turmoil.

WOW, all I have to say. WOW.

Actually, there is something else I will say. I pretty much let people deal with policing themselves here, after all, we are all grown ups. Saying that, this still is my network and ultimately I control what happens on it.

I had to read your statement twice just to be absolutely sure you said what you did. You are singling out an entire set of people specifically because of their sexual organs. Frankly that is a whole mess of human rights violations right there. If you want to be an Insel and blame women for everything that you don't agree with then let me suggest you leave SciNet and go play on 4chan.

If you keep up with this nonsense I will have no choice but to remove your access from this network.

It seems like you hate all type of humans, which really is a character flaw and just a horrible and disgusting way to live in 2020... hate is the main reason why there is pain, hurt and turmoil in the world.

After hearing your thoughts about black people, women and god knows who else; I feel really sorry for you and hope that one day you can expand your mind. I can't say that I've never lived with hatred for others; but I can say that the world is a much more rewarding place since I've changed and have acceptance for anything that doesn't hurt the next human.

You should really give thought to the ugliness that you carry around and spew out.

I don't care for networks that use "Moderators". Although even the networks that don't have moderators sometimes have that one person with a big head that wants to "Moderate" what users say. The idea of freedom of speech doesn't exist. You can only fit in if you agree with what they say.

I don't care for networks that use "Moderators". Although even the networksthat don't have moderators sometimes have that one person with a big head thatwants to "Moderate" what users say. The idea of freedom of speech doesn'texist. You can only fit in if you agree with what they say.

It's not "Moderating" when you spew vile shear stupidity that violates numerous human rights laws.

That's just calling you out for being an idiot.

If you aren't happy about that you are free to go somewhere else.

"Freedom of speech" doesn't mean what you think it means, and anyway, as I can tell you're still able to post here and elsewhere. Who's censoring you?

You're free to speak your mind. Other people are equally free to tell you why they think you're wrong. There is no "freedom from disagreement". There is no "freedom to foist my opinion on others, and *they* must not complain".

Of course you don't "fit in" to a conversation where 90% of other participants disagree with you. What do you expect? Should I go and find some forum full of racist misogynists, preach equality, tell them why they're wrong, and expect them to embrace me?

Doesn't mean you can't fit in otherwise, on other topics, and just accept that you're going to butt heads with people when you tread into more contentious subects.

None of what you're saying makes sense or survives even the most superficial amount of scrutiny. Please either think a bit more, and try harder, or just stop trying.

Why not start your own network if existing ones are not fufilling your needs?

Freedom of speech isn't what you think it is. We don't have the illusion of free speech on private FTN message networks. We have free speech so we can criticize our own government without being thrown in a gulag.

You still have to answer for things you say. Free speech doesn't protect you from criticism or social backlash.

Free speech has always been a cornerstone here, as long as it doesn't violate any laws. In this case, the Human Rights Code of the Province of Ontario which is where the equipment resides that runs this network.

Apart from that, just like echicken and you have stated, say what you want but be prepared for the rest of us to say something back.

Well, he [you, me, everyone] doesn't HAVE to answer for it... he can go to another forum or FTN and complain about another one without addressing the valid people who didn't hesitate to speak out again what is wrong.

While I agree with the basic words of Hustler above; that I prefer networks that allow free speech and let users have opinions without a group or mob of users shutting up the stray idea, I don't think thats whats happening. It is valid and right to say NO and explain why, when a person posts these hateful and racist things. It isn't right, and [thankfully] it isn't accepted anymore.

It never should have been. I think its awesome that people speak out against racism, sexism and other isms now-a-days. I'm glad that there is some sort of mob mentality when it comes to THESE things... I agree, I desire places where I can say what I want, without one click or group of cool kids shutting down ideas just because its not their idea of whats hip; but I think we have that on most all of the BBS FTNs out there.

I feel, in Hustlers case, that he just wants things to be how they were back in 1993... when we were 17, stupid and [may have] held different morales and values than we do now that we grew up and have seen the world. Thank God that folks don't fall for THAT mob mentality anymore!!!

Just be a good person, and most people will listen to your other point of views.

There seems to be a scarily fine line between spirited discussion and someone feeling like they're being ganged up on and/or "shut down" and where the line is appears to be entirely subjective. Ideally, if you state an opinion you should be capable of defending it and open to eating crow if you can't, but I get it, most of us (myself included) aren't signing onto BBSes in 2020 to get into massive flame wars over politics or other cOnTrOvErSiAl opinions.

I feel, in Hustlers case, that he just wants things to be how they were back in 1993... when we were 17, stupid and [may have] held different morales and values than we do now that we grew up and have seen the

I think a lot of people feel that way. It's a major aspect to the whole
concept of social conservatism in politics. Unfortunately for what seems like
a lot of people it's less about keeping things the way they actually are or were, and more about reverting to their skewed (if not out right false) impressions of how they were back when they were kids and had much smaller bubbles and simpler worldviews.

Just be a good person, and most people will listen to your other point of views.

Jumping in here as someone who doesn't care to get involved in the flaming conversations, but a few beers into a late night and what the hell ..

I think that there are a lot of people going through a lot of this shit 2020 year. Beit dealing with the fear, positive diagnosis, lost loved ones, or experiencing COVID first hand in the past or present; unemployed with lockdowns and facing the idea of being homeless with governments that can't get their shit together and come up with a stimulus to support their requirements to stay at home; substance abuse, depression, suicide and/or thoughts of, loneliness, depression, anxiety, etc. All combined with one of the most polarizing worldly political environments I've experienced in my life.

I was a re-new-ed SysOp not too long ago, where the reality hit me that no matter what network we are on, damn near all of us are on the same ones. Beit to keep a network alive that we love, or for the unique content of a few message areas within each. So my observation and personal experience taught me personally that once the general chatter starts and people start slinging mud, it's mostly the same eyes reading all of the drama.

I learned this the hard way as many others are now. It's 2020 BBS'ing, and frankly, there aren't many of us around, or so has been my observation to this point.

I appreciate networks that do not moderate or I'd had been kicked off of 1 or two by now. Frank, Jack, Smooth, and Avon have been very balanced, patient, and accepting of diverse communities, and deserve some kudos.

I have now seen friends experience one of all of the aforementioned challenges of 2020 that has opened my heart to just doing my best to keep my mouth shut and focus on those things we are blessed to share in common and that bind us as brothers/sisters/its ;) At the end of the day, BBS'ing has become a glue to my emotions and I appreciate the platform comparatively to social media.

I wish each of you a happy holiday for those that celebrate Thanksgiving. I'm grateful for this hobby, and the friendships I've established, and I'm apologetic to any I've ever burned bridges with. I think that with within ones own time, those who have yet to experience their personal moment of lucidity that "life in 2020 just sucks for everyone" will soon do so, and I hope as a world we'll create a closer bond toward one another in a positive light as we work through this insanity.

It's a choice. You know, some of us, myself included, came to BBS's to be able to express our opinions without 1,000's of trolls, and without having to worry about friends and family reading our opinions that may different then theirs. So we did, then made friends, then realized, we can't do that here either. It's just the world we live in these days, and thats ok. Putting things into prospective .. there's a hell of a lot we all can talk about other then arguing and venting about the crappy year this has been. We're alive, we're friends, and we have a kick ass hobby that others aren't cool enough to have discovered. Well said; I think that sometimes people deserve getting jumped on - but itsomehow feels like Thanksgiving isn't that time. I do hope that 2020
is somehowredeemed, although I'm not holding my breathe. Happy holidays
to you and yourfamily, tG... ya'll deserve a good one.

I think that when we take the time to learn anothers story and try to put ourselves in their shoes, their local, their environment, we'd understand better negative reactions and be more understanding. Letting someone say something stupid in 2020 is probably the least harmful thing that has happened to all of us this year. Everyone deserves a fantastic holiday and (praying) for a better new year.

Enjoy your Thanksgiving too brother .. hope your turkey cooking turns out successful :) Enjoy eating that thing since your girl doesn't eat meat lol!

I know it's been fashionable since the 50s to conflate economic policy and power structure but I digress.

I believe it became fashionable because that particular economic policy has
yet to work (that I am aware of) as a form of government without that power structure.

Now, on a smaller scale, it might work without the authoritarian bit. For example, it has at various times been fashionable for people to live in communes and other collectives. In addition to size, the other difference there is that the people involved normally are participating because they
    chose to.

A goverment being able to convince their entire adult populace to chose to
live that way without threat of force is a different matter.

Yeah I did that as I learned my lesson awhile back with a Coleco ADAM that I had. Put in a tape and it completely destroyed the tape and the drive. Then of course the unshielded CPU unit wiped the tape too. Now that was a pile of garbage of a "computer".

Now I visually inspect everything before turning it on and give it a clean as well. Although these days I rarely have the patience for real drives anymore. :D Sometimes it's fun to show the kids how it used to work and I get a strange delight of "It's been forever, isn't it loaded yet?" In 1995 I bought a legit copy of MS Word, and it came on like 25 floppies. (I didn't have a CDrom drive at the time). I had to insert each one, one at a time so it could install. And like disk 21 was bad. So I called MS for support and they shipped me an entire new disk set.

floppies. (I didn't have a CDrom drive at the time). I had to insert each one, one at a time so it could install. And like disk 21 was bad.
So I called MS for support and they shipped me an entire new disk set.

Funny you say that. I was telling someone that the first laptop I ever
bought was an old IBM Thinkpad that came with Windows 98 on it. It also came with a stack of floppy labels and software to create the media incase you needed to re-install it. It took me all night to write the 38 floppies
incase I needed to reinstall Windows.

Now I visually inspect everything before turning it on and give it a clean as well. Although these days I rarely have the patience for real drives anymore. :D Sometimes it's fun to show the kids how it used to work and I get a strange delight of "It's been forever, isn't it loaded yet?" "Oh no children, why we haven't even flipped the disk yet!"

I tried to play a 64 game with my 14 year old once and it was on tape. He walked away after waiting 15 seconds, turned around and said to me "What's wrong with you", lol.

Modern games take ages to load. Not "tape ages" but certainly more than 15 seconds.

I guess the lesson is to already have it loaded before getting the kids involved. :)

I can remember sitting forever when I was 12-14, waiting for something to finish loading from tape on my TI. I would just sit and listen to the mechanical "music" of the recording. Got to where I could tell if it

The machines are pretty similarly capable, so I'd probably tell you to look
at the games (and properties in general) that are exclusives and have new or upcoming releases to see which ones interest you. In general, Sony has more Japanese developers and Microsoft has more western developers (soon to
include Id, Arkane, Bethesda, etc. with their new Zenimax purchase.) Both
have good libraries of third party (including indie) games.

If Xbox looks appealing to you, another feather in their cap is Game Pass -
for a monthly fee you get access to a large library of good games, including all Microsoft first party games (which make up a large part of their exclusives, naturally.) It's a pretty great deal if you play enough games to justify the price (~3 a year and you're good.) Another advantage of Microsoft first party games is that for your purchase (or Game Pass subscription) you
can play almost all of them on your PC.

As for the PS5, people seem pretty damn impressed with their new controller. They also have a (relatively shitty) VR headset available, and there's
nothing like that available for the Xbox yet.

Neither console is exactly lighting the gaming world on fire with new generation games though, so it might just make more sense to sit back and see who starts building a better library. That said, both have extensive
backwards compatibility with last gen games, and the Xbox even has support
for quite a number of 360 and original Xbox games too. Pretty cool if you
    don't mind playing older stuff.

And it was awesome. :P Back then, it was like a whole new Windows... in fact, Windows 98 was where I left Windows and never saw it again; I was never a user of xp, 7 or 10. I went over to Mac hardware, and lived in MacOSes from then on until I 'went back' to Linux.

I wonder if maybe just building a gaming rig at this point is the right call Hrm...much to consider.

Unless you do a whole lot of gaming, getting a computer only for games is a money sink. You need to keep it updated (which costs money) in order to keep playing modern games. The games themselves can be sourced for cheap or straight pirated, so if you consume LOTS of them it starts being a better poposition of value.

If you need a powerful computer for other tasks - say, graphics, engineering, whatever - then you can just plug a controller to it and call it a gaming rig if you feel like it. That is certainly better than buying a separate console.

Now, if you are like I was when I was a kid and get a game per year at most (and really squeeze that game, heh) then I think consoles make more sense. Consoles are sold by the manufacturer for cheap, I suspect that at a loss, and they expect to make a profit selling you expensive games. You can have a console and know you won't need to upgrade in years in order to keep, playing relevant games, and if your library is small it is a better proposition of value imo.

Game consoles also work a bit better for drunktard parties, by the way. Specially pre 6th gen ones. Plug and play some race or party game. Much better than attaching a rig worth many kilobucks to the TV and trying to fight off the beer that is clogging your brain while you fight the issues with the HDMI output or whatever.

I mean, I make no apologies for my console advocacy, but if I could only game on one "system" it would be a PC, no questions asked. Kind of a pricey proposition to build a real gaming rig and keep it updated though, but
unlike a console, you might be able to justify it for use with various other things, of course.

At the end of the day, my major problem is that I do the majority of my gaming on my iPad hahaha.

At least the a little while, they're loading even faster than PC games. PS5 seems to be 10-25% faster then SX on load times too, but that isn't sayingh much when the total load time is under 20 seconds anyway.

I know you didn't ask me but I am in the same boat. Its probably smart to way at least 6 months until there are more games coming out of the pipeline and any hardware kinks are fixed.

All Microsoft exclusive games can be played on PC and right now they have a total of 0 exclusives released. If you have PC now with a moderate GPU or plan to get a new GPU/laptop/computer any time soon then that is your answer. Your PC will play your XBox games so unless you have a bunch of friends in the XBox ecosystem there isn't much of a reason to own one.

I have a 1070 GPU which is old-ish but it will play any "must play" XBox games for the next couple of years so PS5 it is for me.

I recently played "The Last of Us 2" on PS4 and holy fuck that was some epic production. This was a reminder to me that I need to have a Playstation in my house, because its the only way to play those games. Its Sony's studios that really make their hardware shine and I don't think Microsoft has any answer for single player narrative games like "God of War" and "The Last of Us 2" that Sony puts out (which in my case really appeal to me moreso than multiple shooters, etc).

Neither system has any significant hardware advantage so thats a wash. XBox has GamePass, Playstation has PS+ Collection and PSNow. Both will give you access to a huge library of games if you're not already in the console space (although I think the PS2/PS3 games in PSNow are streamed). Playstation gets more Japanese stuff, if you're into Japanese/Anime games or content.

Yeah, that's one piece of skepticism I left out of my comment about the PS5 controller - while the demo uses it well, how many developers will take advantage of it remains to be seen.

At least the a little while, they're loading even faster than PC games. PS5 seems to be 10-25% faster then SX on load times too, but that isn't sayingh much when the total load time is under 20 seconds anyway.

10-25% faster? I don't think that's fair. It seems to greatly vary by the
game, with many of the comparisons I've seen actually showing the Series X winning out, sometimes handily, over the PS5. But in either case, most of the time, we're talking about a matter of single digit seconds regardless. Similarly, a lot of PS5 games are performing better than Series X versions,
but we're talking like 1 or 2 frames per second, nothing that would impact anyone.

So did you end up getting a PS5 yet or are you holding out for now?

All Microsoft exclusive games can be played on PC and right now they
have a total of 0 exclusives released. If you have PC now with a
moderate GPU or plan to get a new GPU/laptop/computer any time soon then that is your answer. Your PC will play your XBox games so unless you
have a bunch of friends in the XBox ecosystem there isn't much of a
    reason to own one.

You're not wrong, but man, I hate how this gets used as a strike *against* Microsoft. Microsoft actually opened up their ecosystem, supporting and sometimes requiring PC ports of their first party games, and including access to them with the same purchases and/or Game Pass subscription, yet that is somehow seen as a disadvantage. To me, it's an *advantage* to be able to play my Xbox games on my Xbox or my Windows PC, with most even supporting cross system compatibility for cloud saves, so my saves follow me, and some even support cross play in multiplayer. Meanwhile, Sony has a much more closed
off and unfriendly ecosystem. Hell, until relatively recently they were staunchly against even allowing cross play.

I have a 1070 GPU which is old-ish but it will play any "must play" XBox games for the next couple of years so PS5 it is for me.

Let's be honest though, unlike a Series X, that card can't play those newer games at anywhere close to 4k 60fps. :)

I recently played "The Last of Us 2" on PS4 and holy fuck that was some epic production.

Yeah, Naughty Dog games are definitely one of the best reasons to own a PlayStation.

Neither system has any significant hardware advantage so thats a wash. XBox has GamePass, Playstation has PS+ Collection and PSNow. Both will give you access to a huge library of games if you're not already in the console space (although I think the PS2/PS3 games in PSNow are
streamed). Playstation gets more Japanese stuff, if you're into Japanese/Anime games or content.

The biggest different in PS+/PSnow and Game Pass are the Microsoft first
party games. Game Pass always includes ALL first party games, and they're available the day they're released, which is significant. PS Now has more games, but many of them are older and less notable. It's a quantity vs quality thing, really, and while they do get first party games, it's less consistent and not immediately upon release. That said, it's also a good service and I wouldn't be surprised if Sony catches it up to Game Pass at some point.

You may be looking at loading of backwards compatible games. The PS5 does not load PS4 games faster and I have no idea why - maybe they are governing the load times so its in-line with a SATA3 SSD for backwards compatibility reasons? Series X does load faster on backwards compatible games.

With native PS5 vs native Series X, the PS5 seems to win every time. You're a tech guy so I am sure know you know this - the I/O bandwidth is significantly higher on the PS5, so this makes complete sense and is what was expected.

In real world use, the difference isn't really all that noticable anyway:

No Man's Sky takes 16 seconds on PS5 and 19 on Series X.
Watch Dogs Legion takes 20 seconds on PS5 and 23 seconds on Series X.
Assassins Creed Valhalla takes 11 seconds on PS5 and 13 seconds on Series X.

No one is really going to miss those 2-3 seconds so its a non-factor.

Yeah, that's one piece of skepticism I left out of my comment about the PS5controller - while the demo uses it well, how many developers will takeadvantage of it remains to be seen.

All of the games I played did use the adaptive triggers, just none of them made it feel significant like the pack in game does.

The vibration is so much better than PS4/1X though, and that is used more often. For example I ran around in No Man's Sky a bit (which seems like a really cool game) and if I was near a large animal walking around I could feel the subtle footsteps via micro vibrations in the controller. The last gen controller wouldn't have been able to do that.

I agree its really awesome that they're doing that.

But if I already have a PC, I am not going to run out and buy an XBox to play Elder Scrolls 6. I'm going to pick up the PC version that I can run mods with on hardware that I already own, and a pick up a PS5 for their exclusive games. It sucks that it ends up that way, but it is what happens for some people.

Of course if you're someone who has a lot of friends on XBox or you've invested heavily in XBox games then it makes sense to get one no matter what. But for me I know 2 or 3 people on XBox (including you) so its easy to switch teams.

I'll probably end up with both.

Let's be honest though, unlike a Series X, that card can't play those newer games at anywhere close to 4k 60fps. :)

My 1070 GTX is running on a 1080 144hz G-Sync monitor, so I don't need it to run at 4k60. The 1070 GTX will still play games at 1080 with high settings, although it will miss out on the ray tracing. It does struggle a bit more if I connect it up to my 1440p monitor though. My TV is still 1080p too. :(

Game Pass always includes ALL first party games, and they're available the day they're released, which is significant. PS Now has more available the day they're released, which is significant. Yeah getting new Microsoft releases on the first day is awesome. Microsoft titles may be decent quality for the most part, but there are so few of them. For me there is only Halo, Forza Horizon, and Ori that interest me. Gears is only an average game when you put it up against the single player games being put out by Sony studios like Naughty Dog, Sucker Punch, Santa Monica, and Guerrilla. Those Sony studios are putting out what I think are the best single player experiences on any platform and they're doing it pretty consistantly.

I can't really think of a game since Mass Effect 1 that was XBox exclusive and an absolute requirement to play for me.

I agree that GamePass is probably a better service than PSNow, but I don't think PSNow is quantity over quality. When you buy a PS5 you get 20 exclusive PS4 games that are all basically rated 9 or 10 out of 10 without even having to sub to the extra PSNow service, and thats a huge deal compared to XBox which gives you nothing.

But even if you did sub, I think the games are just old but not lacking of quality...

You get all of the Uncharted, God of War, Killzone, Resident Evil, Spyro, Ratchet and Clank, Metal Gear, Infamous, and Bioshock games. And you get lesser known well received exclusives like Gravity Rush, Little Big Planet, Hot Shots Golf. Some third party gems like Batman Arkham, etc. Its not a lack of quality, its just that they're old and some may not have aged well. Plenty of those games were generation/genre defining high rated games of their time though.

For me PSNow isn't worth it and I am not sure GamePass is either, but I can see how someone could get great value out of them.

    On a similar note:

Have you tried No Man's Sky? Its on GamePass I think. I was running around in that game when I got a day to spend playing on a PS5. It reminded me of TradeWars 2002 if you played as the actual commander of everything in first person. I was playing on someone else's save but I was flying around from planet to planet looking at economies and setting up trade routes and stuff! I had a freighter with a bunch of frigets I had to manage. Seems like a huge time sink but it was cool if only just for the feeling as if I was playing TradeWars.

You might indeed be right - the line between Xbox One and Xbox X|S games is much blurrier than it is between PS4 and PS5, so although I was looking at fairly new games, they might have been comparing against PS4 versions running on PS5. Apples and oranges.

No one is really going to miss those 2-3 seconds so its a non-factor.

Yep. Though in both cases, compared to the last generation it's a huge, sometimes insane improvement. It hasn't changed my life or anything, but especially coupled with the Xbox's new ability to suspend and resume multiple games at once now, it definitely has made general usability a bit more convenient.

All of the games I played did use the adaptive triggers, just none of
them made it feel significant like the pack in game does.

As much as I love the Xbox "S" controller and its iterations to where its at now, they're definitely behind the curve, having only made the tiniest of changes for generations now. I think they may have a "if it ain't broke" kind of approach since their controller is generally very well respected these
days, but I appreciate Sony's attempts innovation.

This is one of the main reason I'm not super enthusiastic about Microsoft's Zenimax purchase - most of those games, hardcore FPSes, first person western RPGs, and "immersive sims" in particular, I'd usually rather play on PC
    anyway. :)

Of course if you're someone who has a lot of friends on XBox or you've invested heavily in XBox games then it makes sense to get one no matter what. But for me I know 2 or 3 people on XBox (including you) so its

I actually do most of my *online* gaming on PC, so the only thing locking me
in is my investment into their ecosystem. I'm sure I've told this story on Zer0net or elsewhere, but I actually bailed on consoles altogether last generation, planning on staying exclusively on PC (and, probably more so, playing and emulating much older games) but then I ended up getting a free
Xbox One S as a result of an insurance claim which brought me right back in.
:P Besides, if I hadn't decided to bail I'd already decided that PS4 seemed like the better bet after Microsoft's hamfisted Xbox One launch. Thankfully
by the time I got my One S they'd already started righting the ship.

    My 1070 GTX is running on a 1080 144hz G-Sync monitor, so I don't need

Oh, you don't have to sell me on it, I have a 1070 as well, and that card has been a fucking outstanding investment for me! I'm still rocking a 1080p TV myself - I just can't convince myself to upgrade yet despite really wanting
to, as I really like my current TV. Now that I have a Series X, the clock is ticking though.

Yeah getting new Microsoft releases on the first day is awesome. Microsoft titles may be decent quality for the most part, but there are

Yeah, I agree with all of that. That's why I mentioned games first in my original reply to Ryan. They really do have different flavors of exclusives, and I'd be lying if I said there's nothing on PlayStation that interests me, though I'd also miss some of the Xbox exclusives if I completely jumped ship.
I do have to wonder what the aforementioned Zenmiax purchase is going to do to Sony's library of third party games in the coming years though. Not getting
the next Doom, Elder Scrolls, or Fallout game could be pretty painful to a
    lot of gamers.

I can't really think of a game since Mass Effect 1 that was XBox
exclusive and an absolute requirement to play for me.

Halo is probably the only thing close to a "must have" first party series for me, though I was a big fan of the first State of Decay game (and, despite
this, still haven't checked out the second one yet. Hehe.)

I agree that GamePass is probably a better service than PSNow, but I
don't think PSNow is quantity over quality. When you buy a PS5 you get
20 exclusive PS4 games that are all basically rated 9 or 10 out of 10 without even having to sub to the extra PSNow service, and thats a huge deal compared to XBox which gives you nothing.

I didn't mean to sound like I was shitting on PSNow by contrasting them, because I still think its a great service, though given my fondness for
playing older titles, I think I'd probably get more use out of it than a lot
of people. And yeah, I think the "PS Plus Collection" thing they did with PS5 was/is a fantastic deal - I was surprised Microsoft didn't at least give you a few months of GamePass or something with the XS launch.

For me PSNow isn't worth it and I am not sure GamePass is either, but I can see how someone could get great value out of them.

I don't game anywhere as much as I'd like to, but they're still worth it for me. Between me and my girlfriend, I think 70-80% of what we play comes off
the Game Pass list these days. It's definitely paid for itself.

Have you tried No Man's Sky? Its on GamePass I think. I was running around in that game when I got a day to spend playing on a PS5. I haven't played it yet but I plan on it sooner or later (and the longer I wait, the better it gets since they keep updating the hell out of it.) Funny you mention that one, as it was one of the PlayStation exclusives I was definitely jealous of when it first launched. Of course, it was also on PC
and eventually came to Xbox, but still. :) I played a similar game earlier in the year, Astroneer. It's a bit more focused on exploring and crafting on the micro level and less on the "exploring an infinite universe" thing, but I enjoyed the hell out of that one. Very chill game if you like toiling away at light crafting/survival games ala Minecraft.

They should get a good mod store going that offered the best of the best mods without all of the trash thats mixed in on the PC side. I'd probably prefer to play on a console version at that point and it'd be something to make the XBox more appealing for me.

I agree I think people will get the PC versions of those games if they can. Introducing mods and filtering through the bullshit on the console side would be a big plus though for that version (imo).

I do enjoy chilling on a couch or chair and playing games, especially since I sit at a computer all day at work/BBS stuff, so its an easy sell to get me to a console. Controllers are better on the hands too long term. Carpel tunnel and tendonitis... Do you ever battle with that type of shit in your hands? It sucks.

I'd already decided that PS4 seemedlike the better bet after Microsoft's hamfisted Xbox One launch. Thankfullyby the time I got my One S they'd already started righting the ship.

Thats exactly why I have no friends on XBox. I had a mix of friends on each platform but everyone converged on the PS4 because of that all digital thing, and then Bungie's game is console exclusive with content exclusive to PS4? That was the final dagger I bet for a lot of people. That had PC gamers buying PS4s (who all immediately went back to PC when it came out on PC lol).

Did you see E3 that year? Man Microsoft said everything wrong and Sony said every right (ie roasted the shit out of them)

really wantingto, as I really like my current TV. Now that I have a
Series X, the clock isticking though.

We gotta pair a next gen console with a good 4K TV! The 2021 models should have better HDMI 2.1 support and its going to pay off for both of us to be late adopters when we finally get one. I may be moving at some point, so that and the wait for 2021 models with better HDMI 2.1 is the hold off for me.

By next year at this time we owe it to ourselves to be in the 4K world! Lets make a pact! lol

Yeah, I agree with all of that. That's why I mentioned games first in my original reply to Ryan. They really do have different flavors of exclusives, and I'd be lying if I said there's nothing on PlayStation

They just need more of them. XBox were hyping how much they were investing in exclusives and studios and I was hyped on it too, but then they pushed out their new console with zero (0) exclusives. I was disappointed but I expect they must have a huge pipeline that will burst in a year or two. Sony I think has 8 exclusives right now.

Were you as shocked as I was about that Zenimax deal? Thats huge!

I wonder if they will end up doing timed exclusives for those big titles though? I know Microsoft can afford the financial hit, but losing sales on major titles like that on the largest gaming platform (assuming PS2-PS4 sales history continues) will be a pretty big dent in their pocket. Why absorb all that revenue loss when they don't reeeaallly have to?

Do you think they'd do a 1 year exclusive on things like Elder Scrolls 6? It'd still be a system seller to those that absolutely must have the next ES game and then they'd still get a nice second wind a year later when the revenue for the PS5 people come in.

I wouldn't even mind as a future PS5 owner because I bet complex games like ES6 will be riddled with bugs. Let those XBox fans beta test that crap for a year and then deliver me the nice patched up version to the PS5 ;) Either that or I'll just "slum" it at
    1080p on the 1070 PC.

One thing I've noticed and I wonder if you have any of this... Is that the older I get the more I am coming to appreciate the idea of just slapping a box under my TV and forgetting about everything else for the next 5-7 years. Back in the day I loved keeping up with hardware and building desktops, but the novelty has mostly worn off in lieu of convenience.

People say "but you can only get 4k120 frames if you have a PC!".... Yeah true but I was playing NES as a child with flickering
sprites all over the damn place, SNES FX chip games that ran at 10 fps with 5 polygons... lol 4k 120 fps? pfft.

Holy shit that was long. Props to you if you made it this far.

Yep. This is the main reason I game on a console at all. Like you, I stare at a PC for 8+ hours a day, every day. If I don't want to completely detach, chilling on my couch in front of my TV and gaming out is a nice break. There are certain types of games I'd usually rather play on PC - I still favor it

    strategy games and MMOs.

    It sucks.

I don't have any real like that currently, though there was a period years back where I could feel what definitely felt like the beginnings of carpel tunnel. If I recall, I eventually started doing some exercises and adjusted my
sleeping position and it kind of went away on its own (for now, at least.)

Did you see E3 that year? Man Microsoft said everything wrong and Sony said every right (ie roasted the shit out of them)

    Oh yeah. That was insane.

PlayStation fanboys often see that moment as Sony somehow sticking it to
stuffy ol' Microsoft in the name of consumer rights, yeah! but the fact that Sony had plans and agreements with publishers to do something very similar to what Microsoft was proposing went under a lot of people's radars. Instead
they reacted incredibly quickly to the bad press Microsoft garnered and maneuvered around the whole situation beautifully. It's funny, because Sony
has traditionally had some pretty big PR blunders when it comes to the PlayStation (Ken Kutaragi in the early PS3 era was incredibly quotable, never mind all of the PlayStation Network issues from around that time) but in that instance they destroyed Microsoft.

Personally, the whole DRM thing didn't freak me out as much as most people.
It seems like a fairly progressive system, though it was perhaps a bit ahead
of its time, and I was definitely skeptical, but personally, the reason Microsoft lost me was aiming the Xbox One as a family multimedia hub (and keeping the Kinect, which I had little interest in, a focus.) I *do* use my consoles a media hubs, actually, but when I buy a new game console, I want gaming to be front and center of the conversation. Microsoft failed hard on that, while Sony doubled down - the PS4 seemed to be the product of *a lot*
of lessons hard learned from the previous generation.

Lets make a pact! lol

Ha! Totally. I just renewed my lease for another 12 months, so I'll probably hold off on the new TV until moving in late 2021, unless my current one dies
of course. It's been kicking for a quite a while. I think it's over 6 years
    old by now.

I think those investments will likely payoff eventually, but yes, both console launches were pretty underwhelming as far as launch titles go, but Microsoft had pretty much zero on the table after Halo Infinite got delayed. 8 that are already out? That's more than I was aware of. Yeah, I'm sure this will be a much more interesting conversation in a year or so, as will it be easier to compare libraries AND performance between the two. That said, I'm not aware
of anything on the Xbox X|S that'll be a total tour de force. Perhaps the
next Hellblade or Forza game will be graphically impressive.

Were you as shocked as I was about that Zenimax deal? Thats huge!

Very. More shocking was the amount of money they paid for it.

I wonder if they will end up doing timed exclusives for those big titles though? I know Microsoft can afford the financial hit, but losing sales on major titles like that on the largest gaming platform (assuming
PS2-PS4 sales history continues) will be a pretty big dent in their pocket. Why absorb all that revenue loss when they don't reeeaallly
    have to?

Yeah, it'll be very interesting to see how they treat their biggest properties in regards to exclusivity deals. They can afford to keep them exclusives (and they've said as much on the record) but that's still leaving *a lot* of money on the table. I think it's more likely they'll push timed exclusives and maybe some exclusive content on Xbox. I actually expect we'll see a lot of experimenting from them in regards to finding what works and what doesn't.

I wouldn't even mind as a future PS5 owner because I bet complex games like ES6 will be riddled with bugs. Let those XBox fans beta test that crap for a year and then deliver me the nice patched up version to the
PS5 ;) Either that or I'll just "slum" it at
    1080p on the 1070 PC.

Ha! I have some bad news for you if you think any core Bethesda game is ever going to wind up bug free! :P

Most hardcore gamers I know (who aren't PC exclusive) will likely just end up with both consoles, as they do today. Easy enough solution if you don't mind having two boxes under your TV instead of one and can afford it. *shrug*

One thing I've noticed and I wonder if you have any of this... Is that
the older I get the more I am coming to appreciate the idea of just slapping a box under my TV and forgetting about everything else for the next 5-7 years. Back in the day I loved keeping up with hardware and building desktops, but the novelty has mostly worn off in lieu of convenience.

Oh, I definitely agree. I favor the stability and convenience, and if I want
to dabble, I've got plenty of other avenues in which to do that. I felt the same way about cell phones when smartphones started gaining in popularity.

People say "but you can only get 4k120 frames if you have a PC!"....
Yeah true but I was playing NES as a child with flickering
sprites all over the damn place, SNES FX chip games that ran at 10 fps with 5 polygons... lol 4k 120 fps? pfft.

Beyond that, I feel like my own personal appreciation of modern graphics has lagged behind the bleeding edge in recent years, especially since so many
games lean into heavy stylization these days. I find myself still playing
games from the last generation or two and appreciating how good they look,
so while I do appreciate the latest and greatest (of course!) I don't necessarily find myself *needing* the graphical upgrades. If anything, I actually find the disparity more annoying on PC - when I have the easily accessible option to make my game look waayyyy better, but my hardware can't handle it at a decent frame rate, it tends to trigger my OCD a bit more. ;P

Holy shit that was long. Props to you if you made it this far.

I just noticed we're posting this in general instead of gaming, and the
    subject is about vaccination. Ha!

I don't have any real like that currently, though there was a period
years backwhere I could feel what definitely felt like the beginnings of carpel tunnel. If I recall, I eventually started doing some exercises and adjusted mysleeping position and it kind of went away on its own (for
    now, at least.)

Its tough the only way to get over it at least the tendonitis part of it is rest which isn't exactly easy when you want to play games and you have to work, and then you author BBS software that people want changes to!

PlayStation fanboys often see that moment as Sony somehow sticking it to stuffy ol' Microsoft in the name of consumer rights, yeah! but the fact thatSony had plans and agreements with publishers to do something very similar towhat Microsoft was proposing went under a lot of people's radars. Insteadthey reacted incredibly quickly to the bad press

I agree it was absolutely not a stick it to them thing, its just that Microsoft tried to be a trendsetter a little too early. We're going to end up where they saw things going way back in 2012 and both Sony and Microsoft want this to happen. They make more money selling games out of their stores. Microsoft wasn't wrong in that future, they were just wrong to force it on people like an on/off switch.

I believe they should have had two SKUs for the XBox One if they wanted digital, and it should have been the one we got with the disk drive and the Knect for $499 and then a model with no Knect and no disk drive for $299 or $349. The second model would have undercut the PS4 price too.

Sony cashed in on that misstep but they were just in the right place at the right time.

It's funny, because Sonyhas traditionally had some pretty big PR
blunders when it comes to thePlayStation (Ken Kutaragi in the early PS3 era was incredibly quotable, nevermind all of the PlayStation Network issues from around that time) but in thatinstance they destroyed Microsoft.

You're right the opposite happened with the PS3. But it was mostly because of the stupid high price, which honestly considering it had really good quality Bluray player at a time when those alone cost $1000 wasn't REALLY that bad. From the perspective of it being only a game console though, it was too high.

When you look at the XBox 360 E3 show, Microsoft really focused on building an online community and online gaming, and man did it look and sound awesome at the time. Sony had no answer for that, and on top of that and they had a significantly higher price tag.

The PSN issues were mostly nonsense though, as someone who was on PSN way back then regularly at least to play Rock Band. They did have that security breach so that was huge, but the idea that PSN isn't as stable as XBL isn't accurate based on my personal experience. PSN was also free back then and XBL was a paid service, so that deserves to be taken into consideration too.

We got to pick 3 free AAA games from a list because of the hack and outage so as an offline gamer it was worth it for me ;)

Personally, the whole DRM thing didn't freak me out as much as most people. It seems like a fairly progressive system, though it was perhaps

Well you know how many people are: They nitpick at absoloutely nothing for the sole purpose of finding something to be furiously angry about. Like right now people losing their minds about "The PS5 recording your voice and may use it to ban you" which isn't true at all. There is just a disclaimer that warns you that OTHER PLAYERS may be recording your voice chat when you talk to them in a game. If you show them that they're wrong, they don't care. They'll look right at the words and ignore it so they can continue to be OUTRAGED AT THIS INVASION OF THEIR PRIVACY!

The DRM thing was a lot of people like that, I think. And it was probably amplified by stupid game console fanboys who don't even use XBox but hate it for some reason, so they pretend to be outraged XBox fans. Its wild how the Internet has allowed people to behave this way. Still, it was a really jolting announcement and I think they (one way or another) needed to ease people into that idea not drop it like a bomb.

We are polar opposites on the Kinect stuff though. My thoughts were "oh it can replace this really slow cable box UI with the Windows Media player TV guide and it can play the usual games too? Thats cool I need that, my cable box UI is really laggy!" The added cost of including the Kinect to the console I think was a problem for a lot of people.

I also think the landscape has changed since the 360 was announced. It used to be that people weren't so hyper-focused on hardware specs and even if they were the architectures of the hardware were so different that it was difficult to make a meaningful comparison. There weren't online communities for people to get together and circle-jerk over this stuff and get themselves riled up into a frenzy over nothing. YouTube didn't even exist...

The fact that the PS4 did have a decent hardware advantage (more so than this generation anyway) and was also cheaper was another big factor and those spaces just amplified the "issue". Perception is more important than ever and Microsoft fucked around and found out at E3 2012.

Ha! Totally. I just renewed my lease for another 12 months, so I'll probablyhold off on the new TV until moving in late 2021, unless my current one diesof course. It's been kicking for a quite a while. I

I hear you. I don't know what to do with my current TV if I replace it. Its too good to recycle it for nothing but I also can't be bothered to try to sell it online either. My TV is from 2014 but it was a really high end model so still nice if you're only looking for top quality 1080p. It even still has a component input and upscales pretty well for retro stuff (even supports 240p via HDMI). Still going strong in 2020!

Well, the other way is surgery. :O When I first started noticing my issues
(and they were getting worse and worse) my boss at the time had just had surgery to correct his carpel tunnel in both wrists/hands and was raving about its effectiveness.

I agree it was absolutely not a stick it to them thing, its just that Microsoft tried to be a trendsetter a little too early. We're going to
end up where they saw things going way back in 2012 and both Sony and Microsoft want this to happen. They make more money selling games out
of their stores. Microsoft wasn't wrong in that future, they were just wrong to force it on people like an on/off switch.

Yep. I mainly point that out because it feels like no one really remembers that. The narrative that gets told these days is that Microsoft were trying
to fuck over everyone while Sony rode in and struck them down in the name of consumer rights. It sounds like you remember this, but for anyone else who is reading this and is curious, if you Google for it you'll find interviews and articles that tell a very different story. If Sony had announced their plans first, before Microsoft, it might have been a totally different situation, although (as I said earlier) I don't think that was the only thing MS had
going against them by any means so it probably wouldn't have changed too much in regards to the console war.

I think one of the issues was announcing it like it was actually doing
everyone a massive favor. While there were some neat advantages to the original DRM scheme, it was too hard of a pill to swallow for people who had shitty broadband, liked to collect physical copies of games, or loved to make use out of the second hand market to save money (which was a lot of console gamers I knew back then.) This is a classic tech company blunder - come up with some
new innovation, culturally buy into it internally, but then fail to convince everyone else when you smugly announce it to the world. :P

I believe they should have had two SKUs for the XBox One if they wanted digital, and it should have been the one we got with the disk drive and the Knect for $499 and then a model with no Knect and no disk drive for $299 or $349. The second model would have undercut the PS4 price too.

Yep. That would have helped. I think the Kinect was neat, but the Xbox One definitely should have launched with a version without it and a cheaper price tag. Derp.

Sony cashed in on that misstep but they were just in the right place at the right time.

Definitely. Like I said, I think they'd also learned a lot of valuable
lessons from the PS3 - the PS4 was a more capable competitor in just about every respect on top of everything else. I do think that MS righted the course with changes in priorities, the Xbox One S/X, Game Pass, etc. but far too late to "win". By the end of the generation, both were in excellent places.

When you look at the XBox 360 E3 show, Microsoft really focused on building an online community and online gaming, and man did it look and sound awesome at the time. Sony had no answer for that, and on top of that and they had a significantly higher price tag.

Yep. Xbox Live was the primary reason most of my friends who gamed on Xbox chose it. It was simply a better, more full featured experience, despite the additional price associated with it. Obviously that's pretty much a non-issue with the last and current generations, but for a lot of people it made all of the difference back then. Hell, I had friends who were huge Sony fans but
still had a 360 just to game online with. :)

The PSN issues were mostly nonsense though, as someone who was on PSN
way back then regularly at least to play Rock Band. They did have that security breach so that was huge, but the idea that PSN isn't as stable
as XBL isn't accurate based on my personal experience. PSN was also
free back then and XBL was a paid service, so that deserves to be taken into consideration too.

Yeah, I was 100% referring to the PSN breach, the weird announcements and statements around it, and subsequent insanely massive downtime. I mean, it's even got its own lovely wikipedia article!

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_PlayStation_Network_outage

We got to pick 3 free AAA games from a list because of the hack and
outage so as an offline gamer it was worth it for me ;)

    Ha! I'd imagine so.

player TV guide and it can play the usual games too? Thats cool I need that, my cable box UI is really laggy!" The added cost of including the Kinect to the console I think was a problem for a lot of people.

Maybe not polar - I think the Kinect's gaming stuff was neat, although it
could have definitely used another generation or two of refinements to work
out the kinks and make it a truly remarkable piece of tech. The cable box
stuff interested me less, as I'd already jumped off of cable by then. That said, I do know a couple of people who used it HEAVILY and *LOVED* it to the point of being pissed off when Microsoft abandoned it. I think most people
just didn't *get* the cable hub stuff, so it had a low adoption rate. Overall, the biggest issue with those features (more so the Kinect itself) was the
cost, like you said. They were determined to force it down Xbox gamers' throats, and it was definitely one of the things that hurt them.

I hear you. I don't know what to do with my current TV if I replace it. Its too good to recycle it for nothing but I also can't be bothered to
try to sell it online either. My TV is from 2014 but it was a really

Same exact boat, man. Mine is a decently high end (at the time) Sony. Before that I had a huge widescreen 1080i Sony HD Trinitron CRT. Fucking thing
weighed a ton but it had an absolutely beautiful picture and some impressive built in sound to boot. It was hard to let go of that one, but it was just
too impractical to keep hauling around every time I moved and far from future proof.
