• Virtual Modem for a DOS BBS

From stizzed@77:1/104 to All on Sun Jun 21 09:39:14 2020
Im working to get my old DOS/Modem BBS platform (Spitfire) back online for posterity. Ive tried NetSerial with no success. Im able to get a connect
but then NetSerial locks up and the service shuts down. I searched and found two virtual modem apps, one is Virtual Modem 2.2.2 produced by fabulatech. This program works wonderfully but is only sold in a pairs at $139 each ($280 to get the board back up). The other, Virtual Modem Pro, like NetSerial does not work.

Id like to get NetSerial working as its the only free option and looks like a much better app than the others. Any thoughts or suggestions for a fix for Netserial or another free (or at least cheaper) app would be greatly appreciated. Please note that Spitfire is not fossil aware so I dont think I will be able to get it running under Mystic or Netfoss and net3bbs.

    Thanks in advance!

Err, maybe I'm out of the loop but I didn't think NetSerial was free? Are you using an old version? Anyway, if I'm not misinformed, I think it was cheaper than that, and if you do decide to register it, Mike used to give BBS SysOps a discount. Beyond that, I know he's pretty good with supporting his products.

Have you looked into emulation at all? Using DOSBox's virtual modem support, for example? There are downsides to pretty much every method I know of, but
one of them might work well enough for your purposes.

    Yeah, like $25 for sysops.

I got it working. They have some problems with their latest release. After applying the provided patch all is good and Spitfire is answering the 'phone'!

Now I get to WORK!!!! ;)

I am slowly working on getting Telegard running under OS/2-ArcaOS. If you end up with a copy floating around the internet to run under...you can load up SIO/SIO2K for free AND run your BBS off of the DOS 5 version of OS/2. Sean Dennis has a version of 4.52 already set up to run under Virtual Box...so you would just need to get Spitfire running under DOS.

Was reading that over on fsxNet. Very happy to hear that you were able to get it working.

When I was looking at running Renegade when thinking about restarting back
into the life...Netfoss was included with the program. Did exactly what it
said to do & was shocked it worked like it was supposed to without jumping through the hoops I'm doing with OS/2.
